Reflect and discuss our text and ERR reading material regarding the role that emotion plays regarding memory.

1.  As discussed in the readings assignment for this week, sensory memory is a general term used to refer to sensory buffers that can retain a large amount of memory, but only for a short period of time. One type of sensory memory is iconic memory. Can you think of a time when you used iconic memory? If so, how did you use it?

2. Forgetting can occur as the result of many different types of actions–for example, you may not have the correct cue for retrieval–but there are some individuals that would argue that forgetting is an intentional act and that, in order to forget something, one must make a conscious effort to do so. Do you support this reasoning? Why or why not?

3. Reflect and discuss our text and ERR reading material regarding the role that emotion plays regarding memory.

Do you agree with the material regarding emotional memories?

4. For example – can you remember what you were doing when catastrophes occurred (for example, the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, the Challenger disaster, assassination of John F. Kennedy, or even local disasters)?

5. Using our main text, and/or ERR readings what does our course material have to say about this specific type of memory?

6. Personality type (for the curious navigate to http:// humanmetrics. com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp) also plays a critical role. Take five minutes and share what your type is with us! You may find that it has a direct impact on how each of us processes emotional content!

Does this mean eating ice cream causes violent crime? Or, does a spike in violent crime cause consumption of ice cream?

To prepare for this activity, please review The plagiarism spectrum: Instructor insights into the 10 types of plagiarism (Links to an external site.).  https://www.ed.ac.uk/files/atoms/files/10-types-of-plagiarism.pdf

Part of scientific research includes conveying knowledge (about theory, research, etc.) to others in an ethical manner, avoiding plagiarism (review the Plagiarism Guide (Links to an external site.) for more).

This is a key professional skill to develop. In this activity, you will practice using your own Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) and applying in-text citations (review the APA: Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.) web page for more).

Review the following original and plagiarized passages:

ORIGINAL AUTHOR’S THOUGHTS

The correlational method can be very useful, but it must be used with caution. If knowledge of one variable (age) helps predict another (buying), does that mean that one causes the other? Not necessarily. It is possible that the first variable caused the second, or that the second variable caused the first, or that some other variable caused both variables. Without further research we cannot know which possibility is true. For example, a researcher might find a negative correlation in schools between the number of teachers monitoring hallway behavior and the number of acts of aggression in the hallway. It is possible that more teachers in the hallway caused lower aggression, but it is also possible that there were fewer teachers in the hallway in the face of aggression because they had left to avoid it. Knowing that there is a correlation between two events does not tell us which, if either, is the cause. In fact, it is quite common to have a third variable cause a correlation between two other variables. For example, sunburn and outdoor temperature are correlated. Does this mean that hot weather causes sunburn or that sunburn causes hot weather? Of course not. The summer sun causes both sunburn and hot weather. Cum hoc propter hoc—correlation does not imply causation.

REWRITE BY SOMEONE WANTING TO WRITE ABOUT THE ARTICLE AND ITS FINDINGS

“The correlational method can be very useful, but it must be used with caution.” If knowledge of one variable (height) helps predict another (weight), does that mean that one causes the other? Not necessarily. It is possible that the primary variable caused the secondary, or that the secondary variable caused the primary, or that some additional variable caused both variables. We cannot understand what chance is true without further studies. For example, ice cream consumption and violent crime are correlated. Does this mean eating ice cream causes violent crime? Or, does a spike in violent crime cause consumption of ice cream? Probably neither… rather, a common factor (e.g., heat) may be to blame for both. “Cum hoc propter hoc—correlation does not imply causation.”

  • Assignment:
  • Define academic voice and plagiarism.
  • Apply your knowledge of academic voice and plagiarism to the rewritten passage, locating and identifying errors.
  • Rewrite the passage appropriately using your own Academic Voice (Links to an external site.).
  • Demonstrate the importance of developing a strong academic voice for both your education and career.
    • What are some key features of academic writing that might be particularly relevant within your own program/intended career?
    • What types of plagiarism do you find most difficult to avoid? (See Turnitin, 2012).
    • What methods/strategies can you use to ensure that you avoid these errors in your own work?

What evidence do the researchers offer as a test of their hypothesis? Is this evidence empirical (observable)? Is it valid? What explanation do the researchers offer for their findings? Does the evidence justify this explanation?

The Mozart Effect

In this assignment, you will read an article about the Mozart effect and identify various parts of the research process. This exercise will help you learn how to read a research article and to understand the research process.

Read the following article:

In your article summary, respond to the following questions:.

  • State the research hypothesis in your own words. Identify the independent and dependent variables.
  • What were some variables the researchers controlled in their study? Why was this necessary?
  • What evidence do the researchers offer as a test of their hypothesis? Is this evidence empirical (observable)? Is it valid?
  • What explanation do the researchers offer for their findings? Does the evidence justify this explanation?

Read the following article:

Jenkins, J.S. (2001). The Mozart effect. Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, 94, 170-172.

Based on your readings, respond to the following:

  • Do you think there is any merit in the study (Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky, 1993)? Give three reasons for your position.
  • Does the study take individual differences in spatial ability into account? Explain your answer.
  • What are two ways in which the experiment could be modified to make the results more generalizable?

Write a 5–6-page paper in Word format.

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. One of the references must come from Sue, D. W., & Sue, D. (2016). I need this completed by 05/07/18 at 5pm.  Please look everything before you bid to make sure you can do this. This paper is a big part of my grade.

At this point in the course, you should have begun reviewing the guidelines and grading criteria for your final projects. Please note: SCHOLARSHIP is the largest part of the grading criteria for this assignment, and you are expected to research the topic or cultural area you are addressing in this paper. If you only rely on the course materials, you will not earn high marks in the area of scholarship. SO, if your interviewee identified as Muslim, for example, you are expected to find library articles that address this spiritual practice. If your interviewee identifies as a member of the LGBT community, you should be reading articles that help you to understand this better and include reflections and scholarly support in this area. If you interview someone who identifies as bi-racial, then research should be included that explores this. I hope this makes sense. Please contact me BEFORE the assignment is due if you need assistance with this. You need to have at least 4 outside professional resources written within the past 5 years in order to receive the maximum points for the scholarship portion of your paper.

The Final Project is a 4- to 6-page narrative that includes the following components:

Have your paper in three sections:

I. Summary of Interview (Be sure you address each question)

II. Create Profile

This is the section where you have the ADDRESSING Model Chart with all of your interviewee’s chart information listed. After the chart, you will explain your interviewee’s cultural worldview which is not something you are directly addressing in the first section.

III. Summation section–answer all of the questions.

References:

This paper has 8 points devoted to scholarship. You must have outside scholarly references written within the last 5 years. My recommendation is having a minimum of four.

You are not required to submit the typed transcript of your interview.

I expect any previous feedback on writing and APA style to be used. I need to see evidence that you tried to improve in these areas if previously noted.
