How has privilege, in any/all forms, shaped your life? Consider race, socioeconomic status, education, and other associations identified in Week 1.

Dominant and Subordinate Group Membership

This week you are exploring what it means to have privilege in all aspects of life, whether it be that you are able to enroll in school and take this course, or that you are able to walk, type, see, taste, or purchase/have access to groceries. Having privilege also means that you have power of some sort. Even having access to goods and services can be seen as a privilege. Discrimination can accompany power and privilege as those who have power and privilege may not be consciously aware of how they benefit from it.

Instructions:

First, Chapter 4 of The Ecology of Diversity (Kahn, 2015) has a “Reflections on Diversity” section near the end entitled, “Membership in Dominant and Subordinate Groups.” Follow the instructions provided in the chapter and complete the chart considering who are you are and what relationships you have with each type of group.

Second, write at least three paragraphs (300 words) addressing the following questions:

  1. How has privilege, in any/all forms, shaped your life? Consider race, socioeconomic status, education, and other associations identified in Week 1.
  2. Have you been aware of the privileges in your life as you were growing up? Why or why not?
  3. As you learn more about privilege, and as you examine your life, what do you find most interesting or surprising?
  4. How has privilege shaped your life opportunities, life chances, experiences, etc.?

Post your discussion by Day 3 of the week. Before beginning, carefully review the Writing Center’s guide Writing a Good Discussion Board Post (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

Counselor Ethics and Responsibilities Assignment Guidelines

Directions: Follow the directions below to write a paper of 1,500-1,750 words on counselor ethics and responsibilities.

For this paper, write from the perspective that you are a professional counselor in the field. Provide a thoughtful response to each of the following four sections, including specific, concrete examples to illustrate your ideas. Use the section headings provided below to separate each section of your paper.

Your final deliverable should be one cohesive paper addressing all four sections along with an introduction and conclusion.

Section 1: Counselor Values

1)      Select two of the following issues you feel strongest about and describe your personal values and attitudes towardthem.

a)      Abortion. (A 19-year-old rape victim wants an abortion, but her parents are vehemently opposed to abortion on religious grounds and have stated that they will no longer consider her their daughter if she proceeds. The young woman is firm in her plans, but wants your help in changing her parents’ attitudes.)

b)      Gay adoption. (John and Bill, after living in a committed relationship for seven years, decide that they want to begin a family. They have differing opinions about whether to use a surrogate mother or adopt a child.)

c)      Assisted suicide. (Eleanor, an 87-year-old with terminal cancer, has decided to end her life but is undecided about how to discuss this with her family, or if she should discuss it with them at all. She seeks your guidance in this decision, but is not interested in revisiting her decision to end her life.)

d)      Extramarital affairs. (Both spouses in a couple you are counseling are having affairs, which they claim are not contributing in any way to their current marital difficulties. They want your help in strengthening their marriage but they are both committed to the “open marriage” concept that does not require sexual monogamy.)

2)      Describe how you would counsel the client in each situation you selected. HINT: Make sure you reference ethical codes from ACA, NBCC, or NAADAC.

Section 2: Client Rights

1)      Describe how you will incorporate the following five principles of ethical practice in order to maintain your clients’ rights.

a)      Autonomy

b)      Nonmaleficence

c)      Beneficence

d)      Justice

e)      Fidelity

2)      Discuss the informed consent process and how it protects client rights including:

a)      Billing

b)      Right to Privacy

c)      HIPAA compliance

d)      Compliance with credentialing board requirements for incorporating informed consent into practice

Section 3: Responsibility to Warn and Protect

Identify the factors that you will consider in order to determine your “duty to warn” and “duty to protect” responsibilities as a counselor. Be sure to consider ethical guidelines as well as the laws pertaining to the “duty to warn” and “duty to protect” in the state in which you plan to practice.

Section 4: Client Record-Keeping

Discuss the role of client record keeping in protecting the following:

a)      a client’s right to a professional standard of care

b)      the counselor from liability

Based on your responses to the questions above, identify two interventions that could be implemented to assist a family with meeting their goals.

Developing Goals and Interventions to Meet Client Needs

Throughout  this course, you have learned about the different types of community  programs. Many of the programs you have discussed started with an  initial needs assessment. A needs assessment helps programs identify the  problems faced by a community and then guides in the development of  programming and interventions. As a human services professional, it is  important to understand the importance of accurately assessing a  client’s needs and then determining which interventions are critical to  long-term success.

For this Assignment, please respond to the following:

  • Identify two unmet needs or problems faced by families.
    • Provide a brief summary of each need or problem (e.g., demographic information, frequency of occurrence, and so on).
  • Using the two unmet needs or problems identified above, create one long-term and two short-term goals that you could implement with a family to assist with meeting their needs or solving their problems.
    • Briefly discuss the specific changes you expect by implementing these goals.
  • Based on your responses to the questions above, identify two interventions that could be implemented to assist a family with meeting their goals.
    • Briefly discuss why you selected each intervention and explain how it can lead to long-term success of a family.

Assignment Guidelines

Your  Assignment should be a 3- to 4-page expository essay (not including the  title and reference pages) and should include the following elements:

  • Title page: Provide your name, title of Assignment, course and section number, and date
  • Body: Answer all the questions in complete sentences and paragraphs.
    • Your  responses should reflect professional writing standards using proper  tone and language. The writing and writing style should be correct,  accurate, and reflect knowledge of developing and delivering family  services.
  • Reference page: Sources in APA format
    • Include a minimum of two scholarly or academic sources in addition to your text to support your responses and conclusions.
    • Make sure that all sources listed on the reference page correspond to in-text citations in the body of your paper.

  • Use standard 1″ margins on all sides.
  • Use APA formatting and citation style

Post(2 to 3 pages) your thoughts about your future career goals, your interest in moving into leadership or management positions, and the benefits and challenges of a social work administrator’s role.

The NASW Code of Ethics makes a number of statements about social workers’ responsibility to study, use, and engage in research and evaluation. In the past, many social workers had difficulty thinking of themselves as knowledgeable and capable in research, despite completing the required research course in school. Think of yourself as a part of a new breed of social workers. You are completing your education at a point in time that places great emphasis on both research and evaluation. You also have greater access to published research than ever before. Research knowledge and skills are like muscles—if you do not use them, they will atrophy. You have an ethical obligation as a social worker to exercise and flex your research muscle. Consider how the NASW Code of Ethics guides your professional research.

Post(2 to 3 pages) an analysis of how you can apply new knowledge and skills related to research and evaluation, acquired in this course to your future career. Identify specific knowledge and strategies and how you intend to apply them. Identify those skills that you believe will be most applicable to achieving your future goals.

What are your short- and long-term professional goals? Do they include moving into a leadership and management position? Transitioning from clinical to administrative roles is not uncommon in social work practice. It is useful, however, to think about relevant skills, knowledge, and professional experiences that will prepare you for the transition. In addition, you should consider the personal benefits and challenges of assuming a leadership role.

Post(2 to 3 pages) your thoughts about your future career goals, your interest in moving into leadership or management positions, and the benefits and challenges of a social work administrator’s role.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.
