1. Sally, a 13-year-old teenager, is tired of having her mom nag her about her bedroom. Her mom nags about the clothes on the floor, the bed being unmade, and the trashcan spilling over in her bathroom.  Sally comes home from school in a bad mood and the last thing she wants to hear is her mom’s nagging voice. To get around the expected response from her mom, she cleans her room, makes her bed, and empties her trashcan.

2. Sally makes the 7th-grade track team by finishing before another girl by less than 0.05 seconds in her event—the 400 meter relay.  Sally is proud of making the team but needs to work harder in the practices that follow. The first track meet does not go well. Out of the four girls on the relay team, she has the slowest time, so her track coach removes her from the team, and makes her sit as an alternate.

3. In the weeks that follow being pulled from the track team, Sally listens to her coach’s direction and works hard to qualify for the next meet. Running her fastest time ever, Sally is excited when she qualifies to run the relay for the third track meet. Now that she has earned her spot on the team, she continues to work hard every week to keep her place.

A self-proclaimed procrastinator, his job as a computer programmer can handle his laid back style and ever-changing deadlines.  In school, however, he is having difficulty turning his homework in on time. Hello Class,

There are some similarities and differences in leadership characteristics in the United States and global leadership. An example of similarities are found by House, Hanges, Javidan, Dorfman & Gupta (2004), they examined 17,000 leaders from 951 organizations in 62 societies around the world. They identified six global leader behaviors. They are charismatic/value-based leadership (inspire and motivate), human oriented leadership (compassion and consideration towards subordinates), self protective (focus behaviors on protecting individual and group), team oriented leadership (emphasis on team building and team diplomatic), Participative leadership (involving others in decisions), and autonomous leadership (individualistic decision making and independent from subordinates). There are also differences in leadership characteristics because of the different values and perspectives across the globe. Some examples of different values seen in Hofstede’s dimension are collectivism/ individualism, feminism/masculism, power/ distance, uncertainty/avoidance (Jex & Brit, 2014) These characteristics are basically the opposite of each other. I think that the best way to accommodate the differences in global organizations is to be educated on the cultural differences. Find out what the culture values. Also have open clear communication to prevent problems.

Introduction
Each person owes a duty to himself or herself and to the world to study ethics and to engage in thoughtful debate about what is right, and what is wrong. It is this habit of thinking about and reflecting on ethics that will help you determine the right choices when faced with an ethical dilemma.

Initial Post Instructions
Articulate a moral dilemma wherein one has to show a specific virtue or virtues (it can be any virtue or virtues including honesty, courage, charity/generosity, compassion, etc.)

  • What is the moral dilemma about?
  • What virtue or virtues should be shown? (You are here selecting the best course of action)
  • Why is that virtue or those virtues to be shown?
  • How should the virtue or virtues be expressed, and why in that manner?
  • Apply Aristotle’s golden mean to the dilemma.
  • Tell us how the dilemma involves conflict moral duties (loyalty to community versus to self, professional versus familial duties, national or personal obligations).

The dilemma must be a situation in which a choice has to be made.

Be sure you told us why your chosen course of action was best.
