List of Tests by Type.

In this unit, you are introduced to the clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and neuropsychology branches of psychology. While these three specialty areas share overlap with goals for clients and the tools they employ in the process of assessment, they each have unique content knowledge and skill they acquired through training and provide differentiated roles and services. Subsequently, the referring concern and the needs of an individual will likely indicate which professional may be best suited to complete the assessment.

In Units 6 through 9, you have studied different applications of tests and measurements in a variety of settings and specialty areas. Regardless of the specialization, it is likely that at some time, a psychologist will have a client with one of the referral concerns including possible neurological problems. In this unit, you read about psychologists using a standard battery to gather information on an individual from a variety of tests and instruments as a means of screening for a neurological deficit. A minimum amount of testing for an adequate neuropsychological screening includes an intelligence test, a personality test, and a perceptual, motor, or memory test.

In this discussion, you will refer to the following case study to answer the questions in Part 1 and Part 2 of this activity.

Andy was referred to you, a psychologist.

Name: Andrew “Andy” Davis.

Age: 6 years, 0 months.

Mother: Emily Davis, single parent.

Sibling: Molly.

Recent changes: Relocation to a smaller house, father abandoned family.

Referral concerns (reported by mother): Frequent intense imaginative play, significantly reduced social interactions, talks to self in his room, destroys toys (for example, rips arms of dolls), falls frequently, and concerns that he fell down stairs (with no open head injury) at the new house (that is, Andy reported falling down and off staircase railing).

Part 1

Based on this referral information, what would be the three tests you would include in a standard battery for screening purposes that include neurological concerns? You may use, as a guide, the same test list that was provided to you in Unit 2. You are allowed to choose tests outside of those on the list. This task will allow you to review tests covered in earlier units of this course, as well as some that are introduced in this unit. However, remember to address a minimum of three recommended areas of assessment for a screening of this type. Be sure to take into consideration age range appropriate for the tests and instruments you select. Then, provide an explanation for using each instrument and how it connects to your working hypothesis on Andy and his mother’s concerns.

Part 2

You complete your evaluation using the three (or more) tests in your standard battery and obtain signs signaling that a more thorough neuropsychological evaluation is recommended. Subsequently, Andy is referred to Dr. Woody Pride, a neuropsychologist. Dr. Pride decides to administer Andy the Brief Neuropsychological Cognitive Examination (BNCE) published by WPS since it can be administered in one sitting and reports that it minimizes reading skills to complete it.

Based on this information from Dr. Pride, and after conducting your own research on this test selection, determine if this is an appropriate test to obtain additional data on Andy regarding neuropsychological concerns. If it is appropriate, then state that and provide your rationale for supporting this as a test selection. If it is not appropriate, then state that and provide your rationale for rejecting this as a test selection. Finally, regardless if you find the BNCE appropriate or not for Andy and the referring concerns, identify a second neuropsychological test that would be highly recommended for its use with Andy (you may select one from the list provided you in Unit 2, or another neuropsychological test battery).

As a test user, identify any AERA standards regarding The Rights and Responsibilities of Test Users, which are implicated in this case study of Andy Davis.

Did the data match the initial predictions? What other plausible explanations were proposed for their data other than what they initially hypothesized?

You can earn 10 points of extra-credit if you find a peer-reviewed psychology journal article directly related to a specific topic we’ve covered in this class and write a brief 300-word-long paper about the article that addresses the questions listed below. For example, you could use an article from the journal Psychological Science. You must use the PsychINFO database to find articles. The journal article cannot come from a newspaper (e.g., Orlando Sentinel) or mass-circulated magazine (e.g., Time, Newsweek, Psychology Today). Also, the journal article cannot be an article that you were assigned to read for this class (or any other class you are taking with me). Also, the article cannot be one that you used for your Experiment 1, Correlation Project, Experiment 2 or Experiment 3 papers. The rationale for this rule is that you must do something extra in order to earn extra-credit! 🙂

You can repeat this exercise for another article and write a maximum of two papers for a maximum total of 20 points that you would earn if you found two articles and wrote a summary for each one.

Papers must be paraphrased (written in your own words with no direct quotations from the original sources). Also, papers need to be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx). In your papers, you must include links to the articles (they must be available as full-text). The extra-credit papers do not need to be in APA format. Just write your extra-credit papers using single-spaced paragraphs.

If you are taking more than one of my classes, you will need to earn extra-credit separately for each class. For example, if you are taking two classes with me and choose to write papers for both classes, you will need to turn in four papers (regarding four different articles) to get the maximum amount of extra-credit in both classes.

Questions that need to be addressed in your paper:

  1. Explain what the researchers were expecting to find and why
  2. Describe the method used in the study
  3. Summarize the data that was obtained
  4. Did the data match the initial predictions? What other plausible explanations were proposed for their data other than what they initially hypothesized? Were there any problems in the procedures used to collect the data that might have affected the results? If so, specify the problems and explain how you think they affected the results.
  5. Describe one logical way in which someone could follow-up the research in the future. State your overall conclusions.

Develop accurate written communication and thoughts that convey the overall goals of the assignment and do not detract from the overall message.

For this assignment, complete the following:

  • Choose and view one of the case studies from the presentation Responding to Ethical and Legal Issues – Case Study in this unit’s study that is most relevant for the type of work you will be doing as a professional counselor.
  • Compare and contrast two of the ethical decision-making model from your Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Counseling text, one of the readings included in the course, or another current peer-reviewed article from a professional counseling journal. Analyze the effectiveness of these models and provide an example of how they might be used to resolve legal or ethical dilemmas when working with students or clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Choose one ethical decision-making model to apply to the case you reviewed. If you were the counselor working with this case, discuss how you would apply each step of the ethical decision-making model you have selected to respond effectively to these legal and ethical issues.
    • Include specific examples to illustrate the actions you would take at each step.
    • Include the specific ethical standards and state laws that you would consult when determining your response to the situation. How would these laws and standards influence the choices you might make in responding to the situation?
    • Describe how you would demonstrate developmental and cultural sensitivity when addressing the legal and ethical issues presented. Use specific examples to illustrate your ideas.
  • Explain how your personal values and beliefs impact your understanding of the situation and the choices you might make when deciding how to respond to the legal and ethical issues that may arise in working with this client or student.
    • Include at least two examples of specific values and beliefs you hold that may influence your reactions to this case and the actions you may take.
    • Present at least two specific strategies that you will develop to address the influence that your personal values and beliefs may have on ethical decision making with clients or students.

Other Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Develop accurate written communication and thoughts that convey the overall goals of the assignment and do not detract from the overall message. Your paper should demonstrate graduate-level writing skills.
  • References: Your reference list must include at least six sources. You must use APA sixth edition style to list your references. Refer to the iGuide page APA Style and Format for more information.
  • Number of pages: The length of your paper should be 8–10 double-spaced pages. Note: Page count does not include cover page or references.
  • Formatting: Use APA sixth edition formatting, including correct in-text citations, proper punctuation, double-spacing throughout, proper headings and subheadings, no skipped lines before headings and subheadings, proper paragraph and block indentation, no bolding, and no bullets. Refer to the iGuide page APA Style and Format for more information.

Describe some of the physical changes that occur (due to internal growth and choices made) during early adulthood and how they affect the adults’ ability to cope with life responsibilities.

Your original response should be at least 350 words and should reflect the fact that you have completed the assigned Readings for the week. Remember, this is your chance to illustrate not only your understanding, but also your mastery of the materials for the unit. Use your words wisely so the posting has substance and includes examples and explanations. Limit the use of direct quotes, and do your best to critically evaluate and synthesize the literature in your own words wherever possible. Make sure to include in-text citations and a reference list as appropriate.

In this unit’s Discussion Boards, you will explore how physical growth affects the young adult’s ability to develop social skills to transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Discussion Topic

From 18 to 25 years of age, the prefrontal cortex is still developing its last connections between areas of the brain responsible for planning, analysis, and logical problem solving. During early adulthood, particularly during the twenties, the body is stronger than at any other point in life. However, there are many habits that young adults develop that result from unhealthy responses to the pressures of new responsibilities.

  1. Describe some of the physical changes that occur (due to internal growth and choices made) during early adulthood and how they affect the adults’ ability to cope with life responsibilities.
  2. Using either Perry’s theory or Labouvie-Vief’s theory, explain cognitive development in early adulthood. Create a scenario that demonstrates the theory. In your scenario, describe an adult (age and sex) in a typical situation faced by young adults and explain how the adult uses one of the theories to think through the situation.

During early adulthood, adults face many new challenges related to leaving their families (physically and cognitively) to develop their own families. These families can include friends, intimate partners, and/or peer groups (such as coworkers) that serve as new “families.” Those who are unable to form these bonds suffer from increased feelings of isolation. In these years, adults develop their social skills to build relationships and continue to develop their sense of self in the comfort of these relationships.

  1. Using Erikson’s psychosocial theory, explain the importance of developing different types of relationships in early adulthood.
  2. Select one of the following topics from the list below and use the Library to search Developmental Psychology or another peer-reviewed journal to find an article. Then, post the article in the Discussion Thread and write a short summary of the research question, method of experimentation, and results. How can you use this information to help clients?

Topics:

  • Divorce
  • Lifestyle choice (live alone, cohabitate, marry)
  • Loneliness
