Review this week’s Learning Resources on the behaviorist perspective and classical and operant conditioning.

A classic example of bullying is a scenario in which a much larger, stronger bully physically intimidates and harasses a smaller, weaker victim to steal the victim’s lunch money. You might think that the obvious solution to the bullying in this example is to punish the bully to prevent the behavior from reoccurring. It would be nice if the solution were that simple, but it often is not. The bully may receive gains from the behavior (positive reinforcement; e.g., money to buy more food at lunch or respect from peers) that outweigh the punishment. Furthermore, if the bullying has occurred over a length of time with the same victim, the victim may also develop a conditioned response. For example, suppose that the school bell signaling that it is lunch time rings just before the bully approaches the victim for his lunch money. Initially the bell is a neutral stimulus that produces no specific response. Over time, the victim may associate the bell with the fear response of being bullied, such that the bell alone triggers a fear response in the potential victim. Now the bell is a conditioned stimulus because it elicits a conditioned response.

Classical and operant conditioning can be used to understand why bullying occurs, as illustrated in the previous example, and to design effective interventions to reduce bullying behavior. In this discussion, you will use classical or operant conditioning to propose a strategy to mitigate bullying.

To Prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources on the behaviorist perspective and classical and operant conditioning.
  • Pay particular attention to the meaning of the terms in each type of conditioning. Classical conditioning terms include: UCS (unconditioned stimulus), UCR (unconditioned response), NS (neutral stimulus), CS (conditioned stimulus), CR (conditioned response). Operant conditioning terms include positive reinforcers, and negative reinforcers, and punishers.
  • Select one conditioning approach and use it to propose a strategy to mitigate bullying.
  • Operationalize the characteristics of your strategy. For example, if you selected the classical approach, identify which aspects of your strategy represent the UCS, UCR, NS, CS, and CR.  If you selected the operant approach, identify which aspects (or operants) of your strategy represent positive reinforcers, negative reinforcers, and/or punishers.

How could you use information from the article to improve cognition in different scenarios and professional settings?

Discussion posts – at least 2 paragraphs each

(Discussion post 1) Chapters 5 and 6 in your text discuss several iconic experiments in memory that have helped us learn about our memory system. After reading about the experiments, select one of the optional articles featured in the module resources and provide a brief critique of the experiment and its application to the real world. You should be sure to discuss any problems with the methodology of the experiment or any problems with the interpretations of the results. Additionally, consider how the findings of the study can be applied to real-world issues. How could findings from the experiment be applied to develop policies or procedures to improve human memory in different professional settings? What strengths or weaknesses in human memory do the experiments highlight that would be important for professional disciplines? (The three optional articles to choose from are attached to this post.)

(Discussion post 2) Mental imagery is an exciting area of research because it has been used in many real-world applications, including improving sports performance, counseling, promoting well-being, and improving memory. Locate an article on mental imagery published within the past five years. Provide a brief summary and critique of the article. Next, discuss the importance and applications of the article’s findings in terms of contemporary issues. How could you use information from the article to improve cognition in different scenarios and professional settings?

(Discussion post 3) Over the years, psychologists have proposed a number of different theories to describe the interactions between language and other types of cognition. This week’s readings expose you to a number of these theories. Some theories suggest that language shapes the way we think about things. Others suggest that individuals are able to change their thought patterns by learning different languages. Consider the influence of language on human cognition in professional settings by discussing how language promotes or limits communication between people. Finally, discuss how cognition could be improved or problems could be solved by examining language.

(Discussion post 4) Throughout the course, you have been exposed to theories in cognitive psychology and have been asked to use those theories to solve problems and evaluate human cognition. Based on what you have learned, discuss the role you think cognitive psychology plays in understanding human behavior and interactions. How has this field advanced our understanding of human cognition and behavior? How has cognitive psychology helped us to create socially responsible strategies for improving cognition? What directions do you think the field will take next, and how will that research be important in solving contemporary problems or real-world issues?

Does an individual’s membership in a diverse population define his or her personality, or does the personality determine the diverse populations to which the person will belong?

PART 1- Does an individual’s membership in a diverse population define his or her personality, or does the personality determine the diverse populations to which the person will belong?

PART 2- What is the significance of diversity when everyone is diverse in some way?

PART 3- Review this week’s course materials and learning activities, and reflect on your learning so far this week. Respond to one or more of the following prompts in one to two paragraphs:

  1. Provide citation and reference to the material(s) you discuss. Describe what you found interesting regarding this topic, and why.
  2. Describe how you will apply that learning in your daily life, including your work life.
  3. Describe what may be unclear to you, and what you would like to learn.

PART 4-

Option 1: Diversity Identity Self-Evaluation Paper

Read the University of Phoenix Material: Diversity Case Study located on the student website. The case study serves as an example of the diversity within self-identity.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word self-evaluation paper about your diversity identity.

Include the following information in your self-evaluation:

· A minimum of five diverse groups you belong to

· Significance of belonging to the diverse groups

· Assumptions others may make about you based on the diverse groups you belong to

· How these assumptions affect your own self-identity.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Identify characteristics of the communicator, the message, and the target audience, considering key situational and contextual factors.

To prepare for this assignment, please read the Harnessing the Science of Persuasion article.

Persuasion is oftentimes considered an art, but it is based on the psychological science of social influence. With knowledge of the key principles that undergird this process, you may become a savvier consumer. You may also find ways to implement these strategies effectively in your personal and professional life.

Before beginning your paper, select one of the six fundamental principles identified in Cialdini (2014).

  • Assemble at least three advertisements, commercials, or personal experiences/observations that illustrate this principle. Do not use examples from the course resources.
    • Submit your examples (paste ads into the document, include URL links, and/or provide a synopsis), along with a one paragraph description of each clearly indicating how the advertisement, commercial, or personal experience/observation illustrates the selected principle.

Then, in your paper,

  • Examine in depth how social psychological principles of persuasion are relevant, citing scholarly research (which may include course resources) on the specific principle you are addressing in your analysis.
  • Identify characteristics of the communicator, the message, and the target audience, considering key situational and contextual factors.
  • Produce a plan to intentionally enhance persuasiveness.
    • What are various alternative principles and/or techniques one might employ effectively?
  • Discuss ethical issues relevant to the collected examples, as well as your own persuasive plan.
  • Apply this insight to your own personal or professional life. Specifically, how might you utilize this insight moving forward?
