Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. Main references come from Van Wormer, K., & Davis, D. R. Discussion – Week 9

Family Influences and Dynamics

While there is no single definition of “family,” most counselors will work with client families that fit—clearly or loosely—into one of three categories: traditional, extended, or chosen. Regardless of the family structure or description, all family types share a common trait: Members are bound by enduring psychological ties to each other. Counselors should consider a client’s “family” to be anyone who fits that description, and is an integral part of the “inner circle” of a client’s life. These would include both past and present family members.

Over time, families develop patterns of behaviors, interactions, and communication among members, often accompanied by general “roles” each individual adopts in the system. Understanding how a system functions and the roles of members is paramount to effective addiction treatment, and to facilitating the process of change. While availability of families to participate in addiction recovery is not always an option, it is helpful to understand the client within the context of his or her family system, the past and present adaptations in the system, and the system’s overall readiness for change.

In this Discussion, you will analyze some of the key impacts of family systems roles and dynamics on the development and treatment of addiction, as well as the unique ethical and legal considerations that arise in working with families in treatment.

Post by Day 4 a description of two ways that family roles and dynamics interact with addiction. Then, identify at least one unique characteristic within families of clients with addiction problems. Lastly, describe one ethical or legal concern related to counseling families with addiction diagnoses. Include specific examples to illustrate your points.

Examine the influence of culture and cultural identity on Talia’s situation. Suggest interventions to assist Talia in resolving her current conflict and to improve her self-esteem.

This Assignment assesses the following course outcomes:

Evaluate developmental milestones of behavior based on psychological theories.

GEL1.1: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard American English.

GEL- 8.3: Formulate a logical solution to a problem.

For your Unit 7 Assignment, you will write a paper in which you act as a human service worker to analyze a case study. The purpose of this paper is to challenge you to use your formal writing/thinking skills to evaluate the scenario using the developmental theories you have studied.

Talia, a 17-year-old biracial (Caucasian/Asian) female, is currently a senior in high school. She lives with her mother and her younger brother. The family is currently struggling financially. Talia’s parents divorced when she was 4 and her father moved away; their contact with him is infrequent. She sometimes feels as though a part of her identity is “missing” as she has learned very little about her Asian background and culture due to the absence of her father over the years. Talia has experienced a drop in self-esteem over the past year due to developmental struggles. She is beginning to feel pressure about her future plans and is having trouble making a decision. She has attended a vocational program for cosmetology during her junior and senior year, but is also interested in teaching or possibly culinary school.

  1. Using Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development or Marcia’s approach to identity development, assess Talia’s current struggle with her future plans.

    Assignment #2

    Assignment Description:

For this Assignment you will write a 2–3 page essay addressing the topic of decision-making and the heuristics that can influence decision-making. Your essay should be well organized, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful. You should incorporate information from your course textbook and one other credible academic source to support your essay.

In this unit you learned that decisions can be influenced by heuristics, in particular the representative heuristic, the availability heuristic and the anchoring and adjustment heuristic. In this Assignment you are going to create three different case studies illustrating situations where a client has used each of these heuristics to make a decision. You will describe the clients’ thought processes involved in using each heuristic to make a decision. For each case study, you will discuss whether the heuristic led the client to a good or bad decision. Finally, you should discuss how you would demonstrate professionalism as a psychologist working with a client who has made a bad decision due to a decision-making heuristic. In particular, you should explain how you would convey characteristics such as reliability, accountability and timeliness to your client.

    .

    Requirements for this Assignment:

The guidelines for your paper are as follows:

    • A title page, introduction with thesis statement and conclusion. Below is a link to help you with your introduction and conclusion: https://kucampus.kaplan.edu/MyStudies/AcademicSupportCenter/WritingCenter/WritingReferenceLibrary/TheWritingProcess/IntroductionsAndConclusions.aspx

Discuss whether the representative heuristic led the client to a good or bad decision. You must demonstrate an accurate understanding of the representative heuristic and clearly link the case study to this decision-making heuristic. The discussion should be supported by information from the textbook or credible academic resource.
    • Write a case study describing a client who has used the availability heuristic to make a decision, explaining the thought processes involved in making the decision. In particular, you should discuss the following issues: (1) Reliability – How would you ensure you are up to date with information in your field so that you can provide clients with reliable information and answer questions accurately? (2) Accountability – What would you do if you realized that you had provided a client with incorrect information? (3) Timeliness – How would you make sure you are providing clients with correct information in a timely manner, whilst ensuring the accuracy of the information you are providing?

Identify the history of assessment in counseling. Describe the importance of assessment in counseling and the role of assessment in your specialization.

Complete a review of an assessment in your specialization area using the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY). Read the review for your chosen assessment tool in the MMY and other scholarly articles that establish the appropriate use of the assessment and what it purports to measure.

Complete the following for your assignment:

  • -Identify the history of assessment in counseling. Describe the importance of assessment in counseling and the role of assessment in your specialization.
  • -Complete a review of the selected assessment. What is the reliability and validity of the assessment?
  • -Analyze the theoretical basis for the selected assessment tool in your area of professional practice. (All assessments are rooted in theory. For example, the Beck Depression Inventory is rooted in Beck’s Cognitive Theory.)

Review this week’s Learning Resources. Consider how to analyze systems-related problems and formulate solutions for systems-related problems.

When consulting for an organization, you must consider stakeholders such as employees and clients, the environment, and the economic context of the organization. In addition, you must consider the relationships of these individuals and contexts with one another, how the whole organization functions, and how it should function. This type of complete or systems view is vital in order for an organizational development consultant to be effective.

A systems perspective employs a “theoretical framework involving multiple interrelated elements, where the properties of the whole are different than the properties of the parts” (Fuertes, Spokane, & Holloway, 2012, p. 234). Simply stated, while there are different elements of an organization—each focused on a specific outcome—combined, they work together to accomplish an organization’s overarching goals. When problems occur, it is important not only to consider the origins of the problem but also the type of system in which an organization operates so solutions can be more effective.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources. Consider how to analyze systems-related problems and formulate solutions for systems-related problems.
  • Review the case study, “The NoGo Railroad,” located in Chapter 2 of the course text. Consider system dynamics, types, and aspects of systems along with how information and systems theory can help address system-related problems.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a brief description of one systems-related problem related to the case study. Using the “NoGo Railroad Case Analysis Form” to guide your discussion, compare the problems at both the macro and micro levels. Your explanation should include the causes of the problem, the systems affected, the alternatives for solving the problem, and your recommendations for solving the systems-related problem. Then, justify your solutions.
