Explain a situation in which you heard it said or someone said to you something that started a conflict or became a confrontation.

Weekly Short Essay: Week Seven

This is a short essay assignment with a mixture of multiple-choice/short answer and essay questions that cite evidence or research to explain/support your answer.

Your essay answers must be in your own words with paraphrasing properly source credited.  Quotes in lieu of answering in your own words will not receive points.

Please submit your responses as a Word document (.docx file).  Make sure to number your responses so your instructor will know where one response ends and the next starts.  It is not necessary to rewrite each question in your document.  For multiple choice questions, CLEARLY indicate your response (a, b, c, or d) so that your instructor does not have to search and try to determine your response in your short answer explanation.

Your responses should be approximately one-half page each (double-spaced) for a total of three pages (not including Title and References Pages if you choose to include them).

1.         Suppose you are observing a highly popular and well-respected politician and a college student eat lunch.  Both proceed to spill gravy on their neckties.  Generalizing from research cited in Aronson, your liking of the politician will most likely _____? And your liking of the college student will _____________?

a. increase; increase

b. increase; decrease

c. decrease; decrease

d.  decrease; increase

Why do you believe that this is the correct choice?

2. Aronson’s text describes an experiment in which subjects watch a victim supposedly receive electric shocks.  Subjects were given the opportunity to vote as to whether the victim should continue to receive the shocks, and the shocks were either terminated or not.  What was the outcome of that experiment in terms of liking the victim?

3. (Based on Article #37 of Readings About the Social Animal) Explain why it was that Dutton and Aron found it necessary to conduct a third experiment, this time in a laboratory setting, to control for what possible potential confounding factor?

4. Explain a situation in which you heard it said or someone said to you something that started a conflict or became a confrontation.  Explain how it made you feel.  Next, describe how the confrontation or conversation could be rewritten using “Straight Talk.”

5. According to the Aronson textbook in Chapter 8, why is it important to express one’s feelings rather than one’s judgments about another person?

Review the Learning Resources for this week and examine how social psychology theory and research explain the diffusion of responsibility.

For this Discussion, you will examine conditions that influence diffusion of responsibility. Consider the following scenario of Brenda:

Brenda was completing a 1-year internship in Baltimore. Luckily, she found an apartment not far from school. To get     some exercise, acquaint herself with her new surroundings, and listen to her music, she walked to and from school     every day. The 2-mile route took her past Johns Hopkins University, an extremely busy campus teeming with     students and passersby. On her way home one day, music blasting in her ears, Brenda suddenly found herself head     down in a muddy ravine right in front of the university’s main quad. Someone had come up from behind and pushed     her…hard. She was not hurt, but at that moment, she was head down, feet sticking up in the air, in full view of everyone on the Hopkins’ campus. Attempting to right herself, she wondered why none of the many onlookers offered their assistance.

To Prepare

  • Review the Learning Resources for this week and examine how social psychology theory and research explain the diffusion of responsibility.
  • Consider the reasons why none of the onlookers stopped to help Brenda.

By Day 4

Post an explanation about why none of the onlookers offered their assistance. Your explanation must be informed by social psychology theory and research.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the social psychology theory and research. In addition to the Learning Resources, search the Walden Library and/or Internet for peer-reviewed articles to support your post and responses. Use proper APA format and citations, including those in the Learning Resources.

Prepare a formal letter to the parents with your recommendations. Include a copy of the worksheet you used with your notes to conduct the risk-benefit analysis.

Risk-Benefit Analysis of a Controversial Intervention

Consider this scenario: The principal of a local school learned about a facility in Massachusetts that uses an electric shock device as a behavior control procedure. For more information on this device, review the Linscheid et al. article. The principal has requested that parents of one of her school’s students allow this procedure as an intervention to stop the student’s elopement and the aggressive behaviors that have caused injuries, including lacerations and a broken finger, to two teachers. The parents contacted you to seek advice on this matter. You conduct a review of the file and discover a functional behavior assessment has been conducted by a BCaBA on these behaviors, but it appears the BCaBA conducted this assessment without the oversight of a BCBA. Also, records indicate some of the previous treatments used to address these problem behaviors included sensory integration therapy and facilitated communication.

For this assignment, complete the following:

  • Consider Bailey and Burch’s risk-benefit analysis model. Recreate and use this worksheet to outline the risks and benefits of this procedure.
  • Analyze at least five relevant BACB ethical code elements that are relevant to this procedure.
  • Prepare a formal letter to the parents with your recommendations. Include a copy of the worksheet you used with your notes to conduct the risk-benefit analysis.

Case Analysis – Integrating Theoretical Orientations

Prior to beginning this assignment, read the PSY650 Week Two Treatment Plan ,Preview the document Case  16: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Gorenstein and Comer  (2014), and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders in Hamblin and  Gross (2012).

  • Explain the connection between each theoretical orientation used by Dr. Remoc and the four interventions utilized in the case.
  • Consider Dr. Remoc’s utilization of two theoretical frameworks to  guide her treatment plan.  Assess the efficacy of integrating two  orientations based on the information presented in the case study.  Describe some potential problems with prescribing medication as the only  treatment option for children with ADHD.
  • Identify tasks and positive reinforcements that might be included in  Billy’s token economy chart given the behavior issues described in the  case. (There are articles in the recommended resources that may assist  you in this portion of the assignment.)
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the four treatment interventions  implemented by Dr. Remoc and support your statements with information  from the case and two to three peer-reviewed articles from the Ashford  University Library.
  • Recommend three additional treatment interventions that would be  appropriate in this case. Use information from the Hamblin and Gross  “Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders” chapter to help support your  recommendations. Justify your selections with information from the  case.
