Self-Authorship Paper: (50 points) One part of  Personal Growth is to reflect on your development in the course overall. You will do so by writing a 3-4 page paper; typed, double spaced, Times New Roman, font size 12 with 1 inch margins surrounding each page and follow APA style. You should have a minimum of 3 scholarly references that are cited throughout the paper, and included in an APA style reference list at the end of the paper.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a sense of your journey towards Self-Authorship, outline your personal self-development plan, and to incorporate what you have learned in the course into your life in a meaningful and productive way. In your paper you will attend to the following questions:

a. What is your definition of self-authorship?

b. How would you know when you had reached a point of self-authorship? Where do you think you are now (i.e., on a scale of 1-10, how self-authored are you)? PROVIDE EXAMPLES.

c. What are the three most important concepts in self-authorship? (hint hint! From PowerPoint!!!) How do you plan to achieve those in your own life? GIVE EXAMPLES. What concepts did you learn in this course that will assist you with this? GIVE EXAMPLES.

d. What resources will you need to achieve self-authorship? Are those resources in place now? Why or why not? How do you plan to get them if they are not in place now? GIVE EXAMPLES!

e. What are some barriers (systemic barriers, meaning barriers across many systems, such as personal barriers, family barriers, societal barriers) to you achieving self-authorship? What is your plan for removing or disposing of those barriers? Provide as much detail as possible in your plan.

For this week’s Discussion 2, choose and evaluate an existing instrument to measure the concept you identified in Discussion 1. Consider how you would compare your original measurement to the existing measurement.

Document: Tips When Evaluating Instruments

Describe at least ten separate gestures and answer the following prompts (in essay format, NOT in bullet-points!)

In this lesson, you will venture out and observe the people around you. Tune out what they are saying and then sit back and watch. Take notes on what type of gestures (emblems, regulators, illustrators, adaptors and affect displays – see further details below) are they using? How often do they use each one? Are they aware of these gestures? You will then use your notes to write a typed two-page essay describing what you witnessed. Please let us know where you were (for example the mall, Starbucks, work etc.) and who was involved (for example two men sitting at a table).

COVID-19 Note: You do not have to go outside for this assignment. You can also do your observation in your own home and observe family members/roommates. Just make sure to explain where you did your observation.

  • How many repetitions did the speakers use?
  • Did the speaker seem aware of the gestures?
  • How did the other person react?
  • What are the circumstances?

KINESICS: the study of body motion or body behavior.

  • Emblems: gestures that have a direct verbal translation and can stand alone such as the “ok” sign.
  • Illustrators: gestures that complement our words such as pointing when giving directions.
  • Regulators: gestures that may prolong or terminate the conversation such as looking at your watch, walking away or nodding and leaning forward.
  • Adaptors: gestures that make you feel more comfortable in a communication situation such as twirling your hair or tapping your fingers.
  • Affect Displays: facial expressions motivated by emotion such as a smile or frown.

Indicate the possible etiologies in a general way and the steps you would take to diagnose, treat, and manage these cases, with consideration of pharmacological intervention

Your responses must reflect your own understanding of the text material in direct and specific context to the case studies below. Cite your work according to APA format.

You are required to discuss case-specific cultural factors as well as legal and ethical issues present in each case.

Your responses must be 2 pages in length per case.  
Entire assignment must be 6 pages plus a title and reference page.

Considering the indicated symptoms for all three cases below you are required to:

  1. Indicate the possible etiologies in a general way and the steps you would take to diagnose, treat, and manage these cases, with consideration of pharmacological intervention
  2. You don’t need to discuss every detail of your treatment – just write from the standpoint of a clinical psychotherapist who does not prescribe medication, but coordinates care with physicians who do.

Case Studies:  Respond to all three (3):

1. Bob is a 47-year-old Native-American man who comes to you with his wife of 15 years. He appears agitated and complains that he feels anxious. His wife reports that Bob has had a lot of trouble sitting still, frequently jumping up and pacing. While he has been this way throughout their marriage, it is getting increasingly worse. Bob tells you that he is a lot like his abusive father, who died of alcoholism.  Bob feels that if he drank, he’d be able to relax, but swore he would never be like his father. The wife tells you that the children are frightened when Bob gets agitated as he has punched holes in walls. You notice the wife looks frightened when you ask her if she feels the children are safe in the home.

2. Steven is a 7-year-old Asian-American first grade student brought to treatment by his mother. He has been disruptive in class. His teacher and the school counselor are strongly urging that Steven be put on medication for ADHD, but his mother is reluctant to do so.  Steven is described as exceptionally gifted and appears bored in the classroom.  His mother tells you that Steven is impatient and rageful to his younger sisters at home. She is afraid Steven is taking after his abusive father, who no longer lives in the home due to domestic violence. She tells you that their father is allowed to visit the children in the home under her supervision.

3. Melinda is an exceptionally bright, 17-year-old African-American young woman, in her first year at a state college. Both parents accompany her to your office. When she came home for spring break, she started talking nonsense, saying that the college’s biology department is using a high-powered laser to alter the DNA in her brain. She has always been an “A” student and has never shown any sign of psychiatric disturbance prior to this.
