· Post your thoughts on whether social workers might try to undermine the implementation of specific policies. What ethical issues might they confront?

Discussion 1: Substance Abuse and Comorbidity

Unfortunately, individuals living with a co-occurring mental disorder are more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol. One population that has struggled with substance abuse and comorbidity is veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their returning to society after witnessing traumatic events and not always having the appropriate resources or treatment has contributed to substance abuse-related disorders. Understanding the prevalence of comorbidity of substance abuse and addiction with certain mental health diagnoses is important for clinical practice.

For this Discussion, review the Levy Family video. Then read the articles on your reading list for this week, including Jake’s case. Finally, identify the presenting problem for Jake Levy.

· Post a clinical diagnosis of Jake using the DSM-5 criteria, ICD-10-CM and the information presented in the Levy Family video and case.

· Describe how you arrived at this diagnosis and what behaviors and/or symptoms met the criteria for this diagnosis.

· Be sure to use the inputs from Other Conditions That May Be a Focus of Clinical Attention

· Analyze your diagnosis and the comorbidity of substance use and other disorders that exist in this case study. What would be your first area of focus in treating Jake?

Discussion 2:
Policy Implementation Challenges

When a policy is launched, its success is dependent on a variety of stakeholders. As the politics of decision makers, executives, staff, clients, and social workers begin to influence the implementation process, their beliefs—and subsequent actions—determine the fate of the policy.

Often a social worker must step out of the comfort of his or her social service world and may find himself or herself making difficult decisions about ethical issues and/or may find himself or herself involved in implementing policies that he or she feels is against his or her social work values. How does a social worker handle the intricacies and challenges of policy implementation on both a personal and professional level?

In this Discussion, you explore policy implementation and the challenges faced by social workers during policy implementation.

· Post your thoughts on whether social workers might try to undermine the implementation of specific policies. What ethical issues might they confront? Discuss how social workers can implement policies that they feel may be against their social work values. Discuss a specific policy’s impact that you would try to mitigate in the implementation phase. Provide an experience you have had with a policy you had difficulty implementing or a policy you are aware of that you would have serious qualms about implementing.

Assignment – Week 10

Application: Career Counseling for Clients with Addictive Behaviors

Adjusting assessments and methodologies according to a client’s need is fundamental to the career counseling process. As you prepare for this assignment, consider the various scenarios—an individual’s level of career development and drug addiction stage—that can alter the counseling dynamic.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review this week’s      Learning Resources. Focus on the case example of John, on p. 525.
  • Think about how this case      example illustrates how an individual may simultaneously be in different      stages of change with regard to 1) career development and 2) dealing with      drug addiction. Consider the challenges for the counselor and client.
  • Develop a case of your own to      use for this assignment. Consider the client you developed for the Week 3      Application Assignment.

The assignment: (1 – 2 pages)

· Use the template in the Week 10 Resources section of the class to demonstrate, in client/counselor dialogue form, the transtheoretical model of change (TTM), illustrating how you might counsel a client (NOT “John” from the text) who is in two different stages of change: one stage of change for career development (e.g., Precontemplation) and a different stage of change for dealing with drug addiction (e.g., Action).

· Apply the four principles of Motivational Interviewing in your scenario, noting how you are demonstrating them in your dialogue.

· Explain how the scenario you create effectively addresses some of the challenges of working with clients who are in different stages of change for career development and substance abuse.

How diversified would you say your choices are? Did you consciously or unconsciously make choices on the basis of any particular dimension of diversity? Explain.

Part I:

Complete “Choosing the Board: Charting the Course with Competing Priorities (pg #241)” exercise. Rank them from highest to lowest.

  • Explain why you made your rankings.
  • List their diversity characteristics and how that impacted your ranking.
  • Regardless of which four nominees are appointed, replacing one-third of the Board members all at once will mean a radical change for this board. This is a source of concern for the Board members and a serious concern of the hospital CEO who deals frequently with the Board. What might be done to ease the transition for the Board itself and for the CEO?
  • What patterns emerge in your choices? Were all of your choices the same on any dimension(s)? Explain.
  • How diversified would you say your choices are? Did you consciously or unconsciously make choices on the basis of any particular dimension of diversity? Explain.
  • If all four of your choices were selected for the Board, how diversified could your complete Board be?
  • This part of the weekly assignment will be at least 1,000 words in order to address all of the questions

Part II:

Investigate various “wellness program models” used by organizations. Write a report describing the costs and benefits of these models and identify the features that are important to the success of wellness programs regardless of the model used. (500 words)

Starting sources:

  • Hanna, L. (2011, August 4). Guidelines for wellness programs.
  • Massachusetts Department of Public Health (2013). A model wellness guide (draft) (Search: A model wellness guide in the search box)

    • 1500-1750 words (5-7 pages); answers must thoroughly address the questions in a clear, concise manner
  • Structure:
    • Include a title page and reference page in APA style

How do two research conclusions play off each other?” An example (not using 600 materials to avoid limiting your creativity!):

November 24th: Response paper: Choose one of the topics presented below. 1. Please write on your first page “ Topic 1,” “Topic 2,” “Topic 3,” or “Topic 4.” 2. The length of the paper should be 4-5 pages (maximum 1,250 words). 3. You must use at least 2 academic articles from the syllabus and a third source may come from an additional article, a lecture, or one of the videos from the syllabus. You cannot use the Doidge book as one of the academic articles but it may be used in addition.

TOPIC 1: Write about how positive psychology can further advance a field of interest (such as healthcare) or a need in society (such as nourishing our green environment) or a need in the world (such as positive peacekeeping in the middle east). A shortcut to this topic is, “Considering positive psychology’s aim to enhance human flourishing worldwide, how can the field make a significant impact on promoting healthy environments and institutions?” We want you to think big and dream, using empirically- based constructs of positive psychology to support your vision. An example: “’Green’ is a buzzword. Individuals, homes, businesses and communities are working to support environmentally friendly living. Positive psychology can help” (And then describe the ways in which PERMA, and/or self-regulation, and/or goal-setting, etc can support this effort). Have fun. PS. Write about how positive psychology can advance the career you are advancing. Since we have covered how positive psychology is advancing the field of education in the work of Dweck and the KIPP schools, if you are going to discuss education please do not focus on their achievements.

TOPIC 2: Write about how two specific research conclusions (from the readings, lectures, or the in-class guests) inter-relate, complement, or contradict each other. Here you have the chance to dig into the details of these research theories and offer you own analytical commentary. A shortcut to this topic is, “How do two research conclusions play off each other?” An example (not using 600 materials to avoid limiting your creativity!): “ Goal-Setting Theory and Hope Theory are not only complements to each other, but ineffective without each other.” Have fun.

TOPIC 3: Create a unique, comprehensive model organizing the ideas of positive psychology. We are not asking you to restate the five areas we covered or to regurgitate things you have read, but to consider a different model for how positive psychology concepts go together and interact. What do you think should be at the heart of positive psychology – is it the notion of flourishing, or something else? Can you think of a new way to unify the components of positive psychology in a novel theoretical framework? A drawing or figure is very welcome. Make this something that you’re proud of. Have fun.
