How would you pair people to work together? What would help them to learn about their emotions so they can be more productive in the workplace?

What role do your emotions serve? And is it okay to express them in the workplace? A salesperson with intense passion can convince someone to make a purchase. On the other hand, an angry manager can prompt an unfair review. In this discussion, you are asked to help your team to understand and manage their emotions in the workplace. To get started, review the following article: Like It or Not, Emotions Will Drive the Decisions You Make Today.

Assume that you are a team leader, and your team is under a deadline to get a lot done. You have noticed that some of your team members tend to get overwhelmed and make emotional decisions. Other team members seem to thrive in those situations and are motivated by the deadline.

Based on this article, make a list of things you can do as a manager to help your team to understand and manage their emotions so they all can be productive. For instance, what could you teach them about emotions? How would you pair people to work together? What would help them to learn about their emotions so they can be more productive in the workplace?

To receive full credit, remember to write 2 posts in the discussion: one original and a response to another student. Your original should be at least 7 sentences, and your reply should be 4 sentences.

Choose a theory that you have studied in this course. Do not choose one of the three theories listed above. Compare your selected theory against the three theories listed above.

Throughout the course, you have studied and written about a number of counseling theories that are used as the basis for the counseling profession. In this paper, choose a theory and compare it against each of the following three theories:

  1. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)
  2. Solution-focused
  3. Psychoanalysis

Choose a theory that you have studied in this course. Do not choose one of the three theories listed above.

Compare your selected theory against the three theories listed above.

Write a 1,500-2,000-word paper discussing your theory comparisons. Include the following in your paper:

Part 1: Selected Theory

  1. Founding theorist(s) for the selected theory
  2. Standard interventions for the selected theory
  3. At least three main concepts of the selected theory

Part 2: Cognitive Behavior Theory (CBT)

  1. Founding theorist(s) for CBT
  2. Standard interventions for CBT
  3. Similarities and differences between your selected theory and CBT

Part 3: Solution-Focused Theory

  1. Founding theorist(s) for solution-focused theory
  2. Standard interventions for solution-focused theory
  3. Similarities and differences between your selected theory and solution-focused theory

Part 4: Psychoanalysis

  1. Founding theorist(s) for psychoanalysis
  2. Standard interventions for psychoanalysis
  3. Similarities and differences between your selected theory and psychoanalysis

Include at least three scholarly references in your paper in addition to the course textbook.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

This assignment assesses the following programmatic competency: 1.1: Demonstrate an understanding of the major counseling theories and principles.

This assignment meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.5.a. Theories and models of counseling.

Explain how practical approaches might vary based on individualistic versus collectivistic client culture

The primary learning objective associated with this paper is for you to explore cultural competency as it applies to your desired profession. Supporting objectives consist of: a) ways in which practitioners might identify their own biases, b) modifying approaches based on clients with individualistic versus collectivistic culture, and c) exploring the characteristics of each aspect of culture as it relates to practice (race, gender, socioeconomic status, physical ability, sexual orientation, and religion).

Instructions

Compose a 6-8 page essay on cultural and professional competency as it relates to a profession of your selection. The paper is to be in APA format and the title and reference pages do not count toward the minimum page requirement. This essay does not require an abstract. This essay can include writing from the first person as it calls for personal assessment and reflection.

Format

Ensure that the following sections are addressed in your paper:

  • Introduction
  • Acknowledge the importance of being culturally conscientious in Psychological practice
  • Identify possible personal biases and how these personal biases could affect practice
  • Define individualistic and collectivistic cultures
  • Contrast and compare individualistic and collectivistic cultures
  • Explain how practical approaches might vary based on individualistic versus collectivistic client culture
  • Explain the importance of culture in your field as it relates to:
    • Gender
    • Ethnicity
    • Socioeconomic status
    • Physical ability
    • Sexual orientation
    • Religion
  • Conclusion summarizing the importance of cultural competency in practice

Closing Instructions

Make sure that you include at least 3-5 scholarly sources in your essay (peer-reviewed journals found in the APUS library). Supplemental and required reading covered in this class will also serve as acceptable sources. I would strongly suggest you use the aforementioned bullet-points as respective (sub)headings in your paper to clearly articulate that you had addressed each aspect of this assignment.

Provide a data saturation definition and evaluate the work of the researchers in this article regarding their efforts to achieve data saturation.

What is a good sample in qualitative research? It is NOT about size or generalizability.

The answer lies in how clearly you articulate the criteria for selecting data sources; (b) your ability to purposefully select cases; and (c) the extent to which those cases are “information-rich… for in-depth study” (Patton, 2015, p. 264) with respect to the purpose of the study.

As you prepare for this week’s Discussion, consider turning your attention to the variety of purposeful sampling strategies you may consider in developing your research plan. Also consider that qualitative researchers seek a threshold or cut-off point for when to stop collecting data. There is no magic number (although there are guidelines). Rather, saturation occurs as an interface between the researcher and the data and (b) between data collection and data analysis to determine when enough is enough.

For this Discussion, you will critique a sampling strategy used in a research article.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the Yob and Brewer article (attached)

POST:

Prepare a critique of the sampling strategy used by Yob and Brewer (n.d.). Include the following your critique:

1. Purpose of the Yob and Brewer Study: the purpose of the study

2. Research Questions Used by Yob and Brewer (if they are not included please infer and create RQs):

3. Site Selection (where the study took place)Site selection

4. Type of Sampling Yob and Brewer Used: The type of purposeful sampling strategy the researchers applied. (Note: Use Table 4.3 in the Ravitch & Carl text or from Patton’s Chapter 5 to identify and describe the strategy that you think best fits what they described.)

5. An Alternative Sampling Strategy Yob and Brewer Could Have Used: An alternative sampling strategy that the researchers could have considered. Explain your choice in terms of how the strategy is consistent with their research purpose and criteria for selecting cases.

6. Data Saturation Definition (below, I gave it to you above. You can use it.) Provide a data saturation definition and evaluate the work of the researchers in this article regarding their efforts to achieve data saturation. Note what the researchers could have done differently to convince you that the relevant and important themes emerged.

ATTENTION: Please note that data saturation and thematic saturation are completely different. One or more of your authors use the terms interchangeably. They are not the same. Data saturation: this is when no additional data will produce any new information. Data saturation occurs at around 6 participants in the majority of studies. Some studies that require a diverse sample may need a slightly larger sample. An example would be that after 6 interviews you kept hearing the same responses to questions. You have achieved data saturation. Data saturation occurs during interviews. Thematic saturation: this is when no additional data will produce any new themes. Thematic saturation occurs at around 12 participants. Some studies that require a diverse sample may require more participants for this to occur. An example would be that as you analyzed your data you found that no new themes emerged. Thematic saturation occurs at the analysis stage.
