Assignment  30

Using  the Chapter 3 Outline for a Qualitative, Quantitative, or Mixed Methods  Study in the Doctoral Project Manual. Read the description and complete  a draft of Chapter 3. Include the Chapter 3 Doctoral Project Assessment  Rubric.  Use course materials and assignments to facilitate the  completion of Chapter Three. Use your previous paper topic and research  question(s) for this assignment. Use the following Outline:

1.  An introduction which encompasses the re-statement of the problem and the research questions. For a quantitative study the hypotheses as well.

2. Research  Method-A statement of either qualitative or quantitative methodology  should follow.  Include a discussion of how the research design whether  phenomenological, narrative, case studies, correlational, descriptive,  causal-comparative, or quasi-experimental is the legitimate, appropriate  research design. Use at least two peer-reviewed sources to ground your  discussion.

3. Participants–The  candidate will describe the location of the participants; discuss the  criteria for selecting those participants (i.e., what characteristics do  they possess that make them suitable for the area of investigation) and  the process by which they were selected (such as random sampling,  snowball, etc.); provide the number of participants in the study,  including any important distinctions existing between them (e.g., gender  or ethnicity).

4. Instrumentation—  Provide a description of the instruments or protocols that will be used  surveys, interviews, observations, or artifacts. Include all  instrumentation as an appendix. Describe in detail the instruments to be  used in the study. All questions or criteria should be clearly linked  to the literature presented in chapter two.

5. Data  Collection–The candidate will provide a concise but thorough  description of the steps used to collect data from the participants.  Describe any recruitment processes and/or communication; describe the  informed consent process; and note the data collection schedule.  If  interviews are conducted indicate the length, the number, where  conducted, and stipulate they will be recorded. For surveys describe the  procedures for how they will be distributed and collected. Include all  other procedures and processes needed in order to replicate the study.   If artifacts are used, describe the process by which the data will be  procured, selected, and utilized. For any other methods of data  collection provide a complete description of all processes.

6. Data  Analysis-The candidate describes the analysis of the data that was  performed as well as the specific steps taken.  It is important to  reference a research methods book to detail this process. Researcher  bias, validity, reliability and other research factors should be  addressed as appropriate.
7. Limitations and Delimitations- Provide a detailed discussion of the limitations and delimitations of the study in this section.
Submit paper of your discussion using points of emphasis above. 8 to 10 pages.

describe which traits will predict which aspects of performance (e.g., “the Agreeableness factor of personality will be related to the individual’s ability to work well with their coworkers”)

This assignment will require you to consider essentially all aspects of personnel psychology discussed in this class.  You may complete it individually or in a group of no more than 3 people. I don’t expect it to be perfect, but whatever you decide for criteria and your selection system should make logical sense.

Step 1. Conduct a small job analysis by interviewing someone you know (e.g., parent, friend, significant other) who has been working the same job for over a year.

  • The information obtained during this interview should be used to create a job description
    • There are 5 parts to a job description (see slides 11 and 12 of the “Job Analysis” powerpoint).
    • Use these 5 parts as a guide when you are asking questions during your job analysis interview.
    • You may find O*Net useful for this part of the assignment in particular!

Step 2. Describe the relevant criteria for the job analyzed in Step 1.

  • How will you measure performance for the job?
    • Will you use a single global criterion, a composite criterion, multiple criteria, etc.
    • If using performance ratings, describe who will be rating.
    • If using multiple or composite criteria, be sure to list all the different parts being used or factored in.
  • Are there any other criteria you might look at? (OCBs, CWBs, absenteeism, etc.)

Step 3. Design a selection system for the job analyzed in Step 1.

  • What screening and selection tools will you use?
    • Think carefully here—don’t just list all the tools we went over in class!
    • Describe how each screening/selection tool is related to the job; be specific
      • For example, if you’re using a personality inventory as a selection tool, describe which traits will predict which aspects of performance (e.g., “the Agreeableness factor of personality will be related to the individual’s ability to work well with their coworkers”)
    • How will applicants be processed through the selection system?
      • Will there be multiple hurdles? If so, what tools will you use at each phase?
      • Will you combine various predictors (i.e., multiple regression), use cutoffs for each predictor (i.e., multiple cutoff), etc.
      • See slide 14 of the “Combing Predictors” powerpoint for an example of how a selection system might be laid out

What other cultures were mentioned or can be seen in the movie? If the character had been a member of a non-Western culture how do you think her family, friends and others exposed to her would have reacted? The same or different? If different, how so?

For this post, evaluate, discuss, and compare information about the effect of culture on perception, including altered states of consciousness. This is an “Individual Only” discussion response, therefore there is no small group discussion for this assignment. The small group discussions are assigned in Week 8. Follow the steps below to complete the assignment:

  1. Make sure to read the instructions provided in the module under Week 4 Assignment details and repeated again in the assignment area here.
  2. Under the “Altered States of Consciousness and Culture” discussion topic, click the “Reply” button in gray to start your response.

Watch the classic movie “The Exorcist” ( http://putlocker.bz/watch-the-exorcist-online-free-putlocker.html)  (available for free and streaming-do not download; stream only film by clicking the linked text here; This site is a high volume ad site due to the free content. Do not download or enter financial information). (Please note: there are other free options of the movie available streaming online; however students concerned about internet security may also purchase rentals through Google Play, Itunes and Amazon for $2.99)

After watching the movie, make sure to read Chapter 4 and discuss the following:

In your response you must address all of the criteria below:

1.Altered States of Consciousness Experienced & Defined: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to fully address)

a. Chapter 4 discusses different types of altered states of consciousness (ASC), briefly discuss whether or not you have experienced any of the ASCs discussed in the chapter. If so, which kind? Be sure to clearly define terms.

b. Here students should clearly define and discuss altered states of consciousness (ASC). This discussion includes, what an ASC is, and what types of ASC they have experience. Overall, students should clearly define an ASC, they should provide examples of ASC they have experienced and define those examples. If they have not experienced an ASC their discussion may focus on the definition of ASC and connections as to why they may not have experienced one before.

2. Psychologically Relevant ASC: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to fully address)

a. Which ASC  appears to be most psychologically useful? Why?

b. Here students need to discuss which ASCs may be more useful or psychologically helpful. This discussion must identify a specific ASC or ASCs and make a clear argument for why it would be psychologically beneficial or helpful. Students should be able to connect this with the textbook discussion of the various ASCs

3. Identify Altered State in Movie: (this criterion should take approximately 1 paragraph to fully address)

a. In the movie The Exorcist, what kind of altered states of consciousness can we recognize in the main character of the movie?

b. Be specific when identifying the ASC. Make sure to use the proper terms as discussed in Shiraev & Levy (2017). A full credit response will provide the correct term, definition and examples.

4. Altered State Development in Movie: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to fully address)

a. Briefly define and discuss how the state(s) of consciousness developed.

b. Be sure to clearly link definitions and discussion to ideas/concepts discussed in the text. Provide examples and descriptions from the movie where appropriate to support your response.

5. Spirit Negotiation in Movie: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to fully address)

a. There is a tradition found in many tribes around the world, such as in the Mission Indians in California to assign special duties of communicating with the spirit world to a medicine man (Caprio, 1943).

b. In the movie, who was given the duty to negotiate and eventually expel the spirit from the girl’s body? Describe what was specifically done?

6. Summary of Diagnoses/Culture Identification: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to fully address)

a. Summarize the diagnoses given to the girl by various doctors. Based upon the character’s symptoms which of these diagnoses seems to fit best? Why?

b. What other cultures were mentioned or can be seen in the movie? If the character had been a member of a non-Western culture how do you think her family, friends and others exposed to her would have reacted? The same or different? If different, how so?

7. Opinion on theme of Possession in Entertainment: (this criterion should take approximately 1 paragraph to fully address)

a. Briefly try to provide an opinion of why the theme of possession is still popular among educated people.

8. Textbook/Research Connection:(should be used throughout response to support, define, and explain concepts)

a. Clearly identify and link concepts/ideas or theory presented in the textbook  to support your response to the questions above.

  1. APA style in-text citation and reference is required. Students may not use websites, of any kind, as a primary source in their responses. Submissions which do not contain both APA style in-text citation and reference and/or which use websites of any kind as a primary source may receive a zero.

    1.  Use of APA style in-text citations and reference is required.
      1. Do NOT use bullets, numbering, headings etc.
      2. Essay format required.
      3. Submissions which do not contain both APA style in-text citation and reference and/or which use websites of any kind as a primary source may receive a zero.
    2. Responses which do not meet the content and formatting requirements listed above will receive point deductions.
  3. As stated in the syllabus and Obojobo modules on Avoiding Plagiarism, responses which do not contain BOTH in-text citation and references will be flagged for plagiarism and receive a zero.

What can you identify as the difference, today, between these two personalities?

Click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser URL address box at the top of your screen and watch the brief interview of Dr. Laurence Steinberg about nature’s versus nurture’s impact on human development.

https://bigthink.com/videos/why-some-apples-fall-far-from-the-tree

In this video with accompanying transcript, Dr. Laurence Steinberg, Professor of Psychology at Temple University, explains the latest research findings into the nature versus nurture debate, highlighting the need to break down the false dichotomy between genes and the environment.

By Wednesday of this week, for your initial post, share your thoughts on the message from Dr. Steinberg combined with the following based your own knowledge and experience:

Think about and compare two people you know. Each one of these two individuals has what you might suspect is a genetic propensity for being a leader. In other words, you have seen evidence that both of these acquaintances of yours were born with leadership ability. However, one of your acquaintances has become a leader and the other has not. What can you identify as the difference, today, between these two personalities?  First share why you think both of them have a genetic temperament to be a leader and then why you think one became a leader and the other did not. What main cause do you believe is the reason that one of them is a leader and the other is not?  Remember to take into account what Dr. Steinberg told us.
