STRESS, WELLNESS, AND TIME MANAGEMENT

Poor time management skills often lead to additional stress in our daily lives.

In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey, it says that people spend time in one of four quadrants. Click on the link below and review Covey’s quadrants.

Now it is time to fill out your own Covey quadrants. Use the strategies discussed above to move more items to Quadrant 2.

Covey Quadrants

This is for your own use; you do not need to upload the quadrants. This is a very proven strategy that can help make your day-to-day life more enjoyable.

Life Events that lead to Stress:

Review and complete the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory assessment.

You will need to mark each item that has occurred in your life in the past year and then add up all of the points.

You will not be sharing your individual answers to each question with your professor. Write a 2-3 page reflective essay on your results. Make sure to include information on your current stress level. Also comment on strategies that you currently use or may use in the future if your stress level becomes overwhelming.

How do team mascots (such as the Redskins or Braves) impact Native Americans (self-esteem, stereotype threat, etc.)?

For example, if you chose to examine a proverb, such as “Opposites attract,” you would first find scholarly articles outlining the major predictors of attraction and testing this notion specifically. Begin your paper with a clear stance on the topic—yes, opposites do attract, or no, they do not—and then present the evidence in an organized fashion to support your thesis.

The topic of your literature review might come from the following list, or you may choose to identify a different area of interest. Scan your textbook for relevant concepts to explore. However, if you choose something other than the options below, you are encouraged to obtain permission from your instructor prior to writing/submitting the paper to ensure the suitability of your topic.

Here are some ideas you might choose to explore:

  • Accuracy of proverbs
    • Example: “Don’t judge a book by its cover” or “Beauty is a good letter of introduction.” In other words, what can one conclude based on appearance alone?
    • Example: “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” or “Out of sight, out of mind.” In other words, do long distances or extended amounts of time strengthen relationship ties, or weaken them?
    • Example: “Birds of a feather flock together” or “Opposites attract.” In other words, are people attracted to similar or dissimilar others?
  • Impact of titles/labels
    • Example: How do team mascots (such as the Redskins or Braves) impact Native Americans (self-esteem, stereotype threat, etc.)?
    • Example: How do labels (such as smart/stupid, crazy or criminal, etc.) impact people’s mental processes and behaviors?
  • Altruism
    • Example: Does true altruism exist? What motivates people to help?
  • Explanatory style
    • Example: Do optimists experience better life outcomes than pessimists?
  • Persuasive appeals
    • Example: How do political campaigns utilize various techniques?
  • Self-esteem
    • Example: Is there a dark side? Can one be too confident?
  • School size
    • Example: Do students fare better in big schools or small schools? Why?
  • Reactance
    • Example: What is the theory behind “reverse psychology”?
  • Gender differences
    • Example: in aggression, sex, etc.
  • A form of prejudice
    • Example: fat prejudice, racial prejudice, etc.
  • Psychology and the law
    • Example: jury behavior, etc.
  • Other: If you have something else in mind, contact your instructor as soon as possible to ensure the topic is appropriate and to seek additional direction.

In your paper,

  • Analyze the social psychological literature for evidence that supports your thesis, providing a Synthesis (Links to an external site.) of your findings. Be sure to dispel refuting evidence.
  • Illustrate specific social psychological concepts using real life examples.
  • Examine relevant situational factors.
  • Identify social and cultural forces at work.
  • Indicate potential ethical considerations in research on this topic or application of insight.

The final paper

  • Must be seven double-spaced pages at minimum (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA Style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s APA Style (Links to an external site.) resource.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • For further assistance with the formatting and the title page, refer to APA Formatting for Word 2013 (Links to an external site.).
  • Must utilize academic voice. See the Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) resource for additional guidance.
  • Must include an introduction and conclusion paragraph. Your introduction paragraph needs to end with a clear thesis statement that indicates the purpose of your paper.

Boundary Issues

It may not be possible or reasonable for counselors to always avoid dual relationships with clients. For example, counselors who live and work in small rural communities may attend the same religious institutions as their clients, or use the same libraries, doctors, or other services. In these multiple-relationship situations, counselors would not be in violation of ethical standards if they took reasonable steps to protect their objectivity and efficacy, and to avoid possibilities of exploitation or harm.

Counselors and supervisors usually consider dual relationships on a continuum of risk. As you work through the notion of dual relationships, you should consider the relationship with your client and the context of the situation. It is also important to consider the impact of dual roles on the power dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. For example, clients, students, and supervisees have less experience, knowledge, and power compared with licensed counselors and supervisors. Consequently, they are less likely to recognize inappropriate boundary crossings or to express their concerns about these crossings. It is your responsibility as an ethical practitioner to monitor and ensure appropriate boundaries across all related counseling situations.

For this Discussion, review the Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Boundary Issues media and consider the population that you are interested in working with as a professional counselor. Then, review the Learning Resources for this week and explore potential boundary issues you may encounter while working with this population. Reflect on potential benefit or harm related to boundary crossing. Finally, consider potential consultants who might be able to address any boundary issues.

Post by Day 3 a brief description of the population you selected. Then, explain any potential boundary issues you anticipate may be challenging in working with this population and explain why. Explain the potential benefit or harm associated with boundary crossing with this population. Finally, explain who you might consult with to address this boundary issue and why.

Be sure to use the Learning Resources and the current literature to support your response.

Respond by Day 5 and expand on your colleague’s posting by providing an alternate perspective on how you would work with your colleague’s selected population. Provide potential boundary crossing challenges that your colleague did not discuss and offer potential solutions for addressing these challenges.
