Compare this scenario to the one for the Unit 1 discussion. Are there different ethical and legal concerns? If so, specifically identify the ethical standards that apply.

Case Study Scenario Part 2

Part 2

Jenny: I do not know Rhonda, something about this just does not seem right to me. Should I teach the biopsych course even though I have had almost no experience? I mean, why me?

Rhonda: Yeah, have you ever noticed how whenever a problem crops up at the last minute, it is always up to one of us to come in and save the day?

Jenny: I just do not get it. None of the full professors ever gets overloaded like this. Why did Ben not go to Alan? Do you think it is because we are not full professors yet or maybe it is because we are women?

Rhonda: I do not know. It seems like an old boys club to me. I bet if they asked Alan teach the class they would have offered to pay to pay him something extra. They did not offer to pay you something extra, did they?

Jenny: No, of course not.

Rhonda: See what I mean?

Jenny: Yeah, (sigh) something about it just is not right.

Review Part 1

Ben: Good Morning Jenny. Are you interruptible?

Jenny: Oh hi Ben. (friendly and teasing), nice surprise. Well, I was just prepping for my upcoming course, but for the department chair I am sure I can take a few minutes.

Ben: Well, I certainly appreciate the time, professor. I wish I had good news. Have you heard about Stan? His wife Julia just had a stroke yesterday.

Jenny: Oh my god, that is terrible!

Ben:I know. It truly is just awful. They think she will be okay but she is probably going to need lots of therapy. Stan is going to take the semester off to help out with her and the kids.

Jenny: Oh what a nightmare. Poor Julia, and Stan and the kids.

Ben: I know, that is why I am here. It leaves us shorthanded here too. Stan was going to teach biopsychology this semester and now he will not be able to. I was hoping you could step in and teach the course.

Jenny: (apprehensive) Oh my, well I do not know Ben, I am really not sure. I only had one biospych course myself as an undergrad…

Ben: No need to worry, we can get all the syllabus and all the material information from Stan and I bet you would do a great job. Listen, there we have got fifteen students who need to that course to graduate. We cannot let them down.

Jenny: That is a sticky situation, Ben but I am just not sure…

Ben: Oh you will be fine. You are still interested in that full-time position when Professor Lee retires, right? Oh by the way, I need to know your answer by 3:00 today whether or not you can teach the course. If not I need to find anotehr professor.

Jenny: Okay Ben. Let me think about it and I will get back to you today.

View part two of the case study scenario in this unit’s studies and then answer the following discussion questions:

  • Compare this scenario to the one for the Unit 1 discussion. Are there different ethical and legal concerns? If so, specifically identify the ethical standards that apply.
  • Are there multicultural and personal concerns?
  • How could you use consultation in this situation?

Make use of scholarly materials to support your observations.

Response Guidelines

Given the additional information you have viewed, compare and contrast your response with that of your peers. Discuss how your perspectives have changed based on the information you learned. Where do you agree? Differ?

Refer to scholarly sources to support your observations where possible.

Note: Remember, all of your discussion posts are expected to be written at a graduate level, be free from typos and spelling errors, and follow standard English grammar. You will need to support your points with in-text citations and references in APA style. This may include your readings for this course, but also outside scholarly sources that you obtain relevant to this discussion from our library.

In this assignment, you will review, reflect upon, and share your thoughts about the changes people experienced and witnessed during the first decades of the Cold War.

Assignment: Results and Changes

The early Cold War era marked a very critical time for the Americas. During this time, nations saw a rise in globalization paralleled by an explosion of consumerism. These changes brought about power struggles, which ensued as nations clawed their way to the top and into superpower roles.

With these changes came increased tension between the democratic and communist nations. In the aftermath of World War II, the fear of a new war weighed heavily on the people of the Americas. This weight soon caused political, economic, and social division within these nations.

In this assignment, you will review, reflect upon, and share your thoughts about the changes people experienced and witnessed during the first decades of the Cold War.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the L’Unita Interview with Fidel Castro and Salvador Allende’s speech from this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Chose two elements from the following:
    • Social
    • Economical
    • Political/governmental
    • Environmental
  • Imagine that you were born near the end of World War II and that you are now a young adult living in a country we read about this past week (so you would be writing in the 1960s), reflecting on the past two decades of the Cold War.
    • Consider what you would have experienced and witnessed during the Cold War.
    • Think about what it was like to live through the effects of the Cold War.
    • Draw from your readings and consider how the events of this era have created changes in the social, political/governmental, religious, and economic arenas of your country and the world.

The assignment:

  • Write a 1-page journal entry for each of the two elements chosen and evaluate the changes you would have experienced and witnessed during this period of the Cold War.

Week 3 Assignment

Explain one advantage and one potential disadvantage of the survey method you proposed as it relates to your specific study idea.

As you read in Chapter 1, research designed to assess and answer questions about the current state of affairs is descriptive research. It is called descriptive research because no variables are manipulated (as you would find in an experimental research design). Rather, the goal of descriptive research is to provide a snapshot of thoughts, beliefs, or behaviors of groups of people at a given time. One common type of descriptive research is survey research. A survey is a type of self-report measure that can be administered either through an interview or written questionnaire.

Interviews are surveys in which researchers read questions to participants either in person or by telephone. The questions are either structured or unstructured. When using a structured interview technique, the researcher predetermines the questions to ask participants and records their responses. An example of a structured interview technique is a phone call during the evening at home requesting a “few minutes of your time” to ask your opinions about candidates in an upcoming political election. In an unstructured interview, the researcher asks the respondents to talk freely about a particular topic and records their answers. An example of an unstructured interview technique is a focus group setting, wherein a number of people meet at the same time to share their thoughts and opinions about a particular topic, such as their emotional reactions to viewing advertising campaigns.

Questionnaires are different from interviews because participants complete these assessments on their own, and usually without supervision. The other difference is that participants complete questionnaires in a fixed-format. This means participants answer questions in the exact same order and select their answers from various response choices provided (e.g., multiple choice or true/false) rather than freely reporting what comes to mind. An example of a questionnaire is a poll located in a magazine questioning you about your present satisfaction in your romantic relationship.

Consider the last time you were asked to complete a survey either by interview or questionnaire. Did you participate? Why, or why not? Though survey methods are a good way to collect a lot of data quickly, participants are not always eager to take the time and effort required to complete them. For this Assignment, you select a particular survey method to collect data on a study idea. You analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the method and consider strategies for increasing participant response rates.

To prepare

  • Review again the assigned pages from Chapter 6 and Chapter 8 of your course text.
  • Think about the study idea that you developed for the Discussion this week.
  • Think about what types of data you would collect utilizing various survey methods (e.g., interviews and questionnaires, focus groups).
  • Consider strategies researchers use to attempt to increase the participant response rates of surveys. Also, consider surveys and questionnaires that you have received in the past and your reasons for responding or not responding.

The Assignment: (1–2 pages)

  • For context, briefly provide the topic and study idea you developed for the Discussion this week (fewer than 50 words).
  • Propose a survey method for collecting data (e.g., a structured or nonstructured interview, a focus group, questionnaires) and your rationale for selecting this method as it relates to your specific study idea.
  • Explain one advantage and one potential disadvantage of the survey method you proposed as it relates to your specific study idea.
  • Explain at least one strategy that you could use to attempt to get individuals to respond to your proposed survey method.

Explain, with as much visual information as possible, the client’s cognitive or behavioral symptoms based on your selected theoretical orientation.

Prior to beginning work on this interactive assignment, please review Cases 18, 19, and 20 in Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology (Gorenstein & Comer 2015) and any relevant Instructor Guidance.

In practice, clinical and counseling psychologists utilize psychoeducational tools (e.g., bibliotherapy, client handouts, worksheets, etc.) to enhance the client’s knowledge about mental health issues, coping strategies, and resources.

For this interactive assignment, you will create a visually interesting client handout based on the case study chosen for the Psychiatric Diagnosis assignment in PSY645 and your Week Six Psychological Treatment Plan in this course. You must attach your client handout document to your initial post in the forum.

The client handout will include the following required elements.

Education: Explain, with as much visual information as possible, the client’s cognitive or behavioral symptoms based on your selected theoretical orientation. You may choose to create diagrams, figures, or charts to illustrate the relationship between the client’s cognitions, affect, and behavior.

Intervention: Create a self-help exercise (e.g., a dysfunctional thought record, meditation, deep breathing, guided imagery, muscle relaxation, thought stopping, etc.) to assist the client in monitoring or reducing maladaptive cognitions, affect, and/or behavior outside of therapeutic sessions. Include an explanation about how the handout could be useful in reducing the client’s symptoms. You may choose to visually represent this exercise with charts, scripts, steps, or other media.

Resources: Assess current trends in psychotherapy, and list complete APA reference entries for five sources that would help the client learn more about his or her presenting problem(s), early warning signs of relapse, and managing symptoms. Please include hyperlinks if such exist for your resources.
