Reflect: The change of our world from a local economy to a national economy to a global, international economy means that increasingly diverse populations will have to work together to achieve common goals. However, as the economy becomes increasingly global, local economies and people may suffer economic disadvantage or may find themselves marginalized from the rest of the world. Globalization creates ethical dilemmas for which we will need to find solutions.

Write: For this discussion, address the following prompts:

  • Explain the implications of globalization.
  • Identify at least two ethical issues that go along with the global societal topic you have chosen for your final essay.
  • Explain how globalization contributes to or affects these ethical dilemmas.
  • Propose solutions to these ethical dilemmas that are feasible financially, socially, and culturally.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt. You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference entries of all sources cited at the end of your response.

What are some definitions of culture that researchers have utilized? What is a definition of culture that resonates with you and why?

A veritable plethora of scholarship has been devoted to attempting to define culture.  The concept is complex, yet most individuals have some idea about what the term means and includes. The idea of culture is so central to so much that makes us human, that it is well worth our time to explore and unpack its meaning in some depth. We may find that our ideas about culture share much in common with others’ ideas about culture, but we may also find some nuances or emphases in some definitions that are less apparent in other definitions.

For this Discussion, you will closely examine various definitions of culture and the importance it may have to the psychology community.

  • What are some definitions of culture that researchers have utilized?
  • What is a definition of culture that resonates with you and why?
  • Why should psychologists be interested in understanding culture?

Select one case study from chapters 9-12 in the Sue et al. text and answer 2 of the Reflection and Discussion Questions fully and in depth with a thread that articulates course-related knowledge and demonstrates critical reflection.

In the following module/week, respond to at least two classmates’ threads. In your replies, extend the discussion by analyzing and building upon your peers’ ideas, asking relevant questions as needed. Also, briefly respond to all classmates who replied to your original thread as well as to any questions or comments from the instructor.

Internal consistency reliability coefficient = .92

Alternate forms reliability coefficient = .82

Test-retest reliability coefficient = .50

The internal consistency reliability coefficient of .92 tells the test administrators that the test has a high level of internal reliability meaning that the tests, based on its constructs and how many items are to be evaluated, have a high probability of producing reliable results (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2017). The THING test score of .92 for internal reliability tells us that there is a very good chance that the items being tested are measuring the same construct. Alternate forms reliability coefficient is important when the test has more than one forms of a test. This is important to ensure that the test developers are creating tests that are testing the same thing. Using THING 1 and THING 2 (another form of the THING test), a reliability score of .82 was found. This means that there is a moderate chance that the tests are measuring/testing the same items, which means that there needs to be tweaks in the constructs and items tested in order to ensure that the tests are producing reliable and accurate outcomes (Coehn & Swerdlik, 2017). The test-retest reliability is an important factor to look at because a test should be reliable over time. Reliability can be determined by how similar test results are from one individual at two separate points in time (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2017). With a coefficient of .50, this would show that the test produced different results over time, meaning the test is not very reliable over time.

Testing is a very important aspect of psychology and without having tests that are reliable, accurate, and dependable, it would be difficult to operate. It is important to develop reliable tests to provide accurate results and allow administrators and others to determine areas for improvement.

Does the plan benefit only people who were actual victims of discrimination?  3. What population was used to establish goals?

The personnel director at East High School thinks she is in big trouble. Ten years ago, 30% of the residents in the county were Hispanic yet only 5% of the school employees were Hispanic. To remedy this situation, the school system developed an affirmative action program in which at least 40% of all new hires were to be Hispanic. The program had been working well because today 25% of all school employees are Hispanic compared to 28% in the qualified work force.

Last week, however, a white employee who wasn’t hired for a teaching job filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the affirmative action plan. Tory Bolton claimed that he was more qualified than the minority applicant who received the job. Bolton had a 3.4 college GPA and three years of teaching experience whereas George Lopez, the minority applicant, had only a 3.2 GPA and two years of teaching experience. Should the personnel director be worried? Why or why not? Use the flowchart on page 105 of your text (Figure 3.4) as a guide. Be sure to discuss your decision at each step of the flowchart.

Each step of the flowchart:

1. Was there history of discrimination?

2. Does the plan benefit only people who were actual victims of discrimination?

3. What population was used to establish goals?

4. Did Affirmative action method trammel rights to non-minority?

5. Is there an ending to the plan?
