Briefly discuss values, morals, religious or spiritual beliefs or other items that important to the student’s nuclear and extended family.

In examining psychological theories as applied to diverse groups, it is critical that students have the opportunity to think about their own cultural heritage and personal experience in the world as well as any biases they may propagate about different minority populations.

This first assignment will provide students a structured opportunity to engage in some “family-snooping” and personal introspection. Each student is to interview relevant family members, use on-line or print materials or other resources to learn about his or her family history.

At minimum, students should be able to:

1. Identify the country or countries from which they emanate with a brief summary of how ancestors came to live in various areas of the United States.

2. Briefly discuss values, morals, religious or spiritual beliefs or other items that important to the student’s nuclear and extended family.

3. Succinctly explain how the family has handled interactions with racial/ethnic groups that are different from their racial/ethnic background and briefly explain how members of the family who belong to other minority groups (e.g., women, sexual minorities, people of multiracial descent, persons with disabilities, older adults) have been treated or what they have experienced.

4. Reflect upon and then briefly recount what has been learned about the family system and explore what biases the student may maintain toward those who are different from him or her.

Please note: this is to be about your family and cultural upbringing. Since culture is the focus, and not biology, all students should be able to answer the questions.

Please ensure that you do NOT exceed 6 double-spaced pages (12 point font maximum) in completing this assignment, as it is important that you learn to concisely express your thoughts in your writing. Standard APA format it required, but you may choose to use first person in completing this first paper if you so desire.

What implications does the pressure of presenting an ideal self on social media have in terms of how people use introspection, self-observation, and other people’s reactions to know themselves?

People come to know themselves in large part by observing others’ reactions to them when engaged in face-to-face social interaction. The popularity of and reliance on social media (e.g., Facebook) for social connection interferes with the self-knowledge process. This interference is compounded, further, by the tendency for people to pose as who they wish to be but are not (Wright, White, & Obst, 2018). Others’ reactions to them as a source of self-knowledge is based, then, on an idealized presentation, and social feedback on this idealized presentation can have little self-knowledge value.

Assignment:

Submit 3–5 pages, excluding title page and reference page:

  • What implications does the pressure of presenting an ideal self on social media have in terms of how people use introspection, self-observation, and other people’s reactions to know themselves?
  • If relying on social media for social connection fails to provide useful information for developing an authentic self, then how confident might a person be when meeting new people face-to-face?
  • What information about how others perceive you might you need but do not get when relying on social media for social connection?
  • Your arguments and conclusions must be supported by social psychology theory and research.

identify one aspect of the case study that would be most challenging to you if you were the administrator, and explain why.

How do you deal with the aftermath of a tragedy? Working with staff to return to a sense of “normalcy” after a traumatic event can be difficult and challenging. In addition to providing support for staff, you must consider the event’s impact on clients as well. As an administrator, you can integrate your clinical and administrative social work skills for intervention at multiple levels within an organization when you address trauma, as well as conflicts in the workplace. As an administrator, you must also be able to develop a plan of action that will include conflict resolution and support for staff, clients, and other appropriate stakeholders to enable them to move forward after their traumatic experience.

For this Discussion, you focus on the Social Work Supervision Trauma Within Agencies case study.

Post(2 to 3 pages) an explanation of the types of skills the social work administrator demonstrated as she addressed the problem of Carla’s absence at work and the trauma-related events that followed. Be sure to include an analysis of the administrator’s use of conflict resolution skills. Finally, identify one aspect of the case study that would be most challenging to you if you were the administrator, and explain why.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your reference

Case Study and Questions

Gloria is a recent college graduate and a single mom to 16-year-old Gary. Gloria and Gary used to be close. But recently, Gloria has noticed that Gary is only focused on what his friends think about him. Gary recently snuck out of his bedroom window and went to a party when he was supposed to be studying for a big exam. Gloria caught him coming home and smelled alcohol on his breath and marijuana on his clothes. Gloria is shocked and appalled by her son’s recent behavior and grounded him for two weeks.

Gloria comes to you because she needs some advice on how to handle her son’s poor choices. Using what you have learned about the adolescent brain and social development in Chapter 3 of the webtext, answer the questions below to help Gloria understand why her son is making such poor choices, and pose some recommendations to help her solve her problem:

1. What physically happens to teen brains that make it difficult for someone like Gary to weigh risk and reward?

2. In addition to their brains changing, teens change socially too. Why may Gary value his peers more than his mom?

3. What specific strategies or advice would you recommend that Gloria can do to help her son to make better decisions?

4. Place yourself in Gloria’s shoes. How do you think Gloria is feeling? How can understanding her feelings help you offer constructive advice?
