Evaluate the risk and benefits of treating a patient with the most common type of medication and of not using drugs to treat the patient.

Treatment of Schizophrenia and Depression

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the required articles for this week.

Taking on the role of the expert in the treatment of schizophrenia or depression, you will prepare a presentation for a group of physicians who are seeking your opinion on the treatment of patients with these disorders. For this interactive assignment you will create and upload a 5- to10-slide PowerPoint presentation as well as a five-minute screencast of the presentation to share with your peers.

For this presentation, select either schizophrenia or depression as the basis for your presentation. Begin by creating your PowerPoint presentation. In the presentation, include information which explains the neurotransmitter theory behind the disorder and how the drugs used to treat the disorder affect those neurotransmitter systems.  Evaluate the risk and benefits of treating a patient with the most common type of medication and of not using drugs to treat the patient. In your evaluation, examine issues such as the rate of success with the most common drugs used as well as the incidence of side effects with these same drugs, including mortality associated with drug use. Then consider not using medications to treat the disorder. Take into account the natural course of the illness, the rate of spontaneous recovery, and the rate of mortality when untreated. You may also incorporate the use of other modes of treatment into your evaluation.

Your PowerPoint must include your presenter notes in the notes field to indicate what you intend to say during the screencast and well-chosen images to enhance the understanding of your audience. Remember that your screencast will be a maximum of five-minutes, and use your speaker notes to ensure that you will be able to present your materials within this time limit. (You may access Garr Reynolds’s Top Ten Slide Tips for additional assistance in creating an effective visual presentation.) Once you have created your PowerPoint you will create a screencast presentation of up to 5 minutes in length using any screencasting software you choose. (Quick-Start Guides are available for Screencast-O-Maticfor your convenience.) Attach your PowerPoint file to your intial post and include the URL for your screencast in the body of the post before submitting it.

Note to Students: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and to listen the audio narrative of others.  Note you are also asked to provide a transcript of your presentatio

Describe a recommendation for the sports organizer, who wonders if everyone should receive a trophy just for participating.

Assignment 1: Self-Esteem in Children

In the U.S., a common worry of parents is whether their children have a high self-esteem. In the age of increased awareness of the ramifications of bullying behavior (physical, verbal, and relational-aggression), as well as increased competition it is no wonder parents are concerned. Aleksandar is a coordinator of athletic programs for Centervale. In the past, parents have insisted on participation trophies for all kids playing sports between the ages of 5 and 11. There is currently a debate in Centervale regarding whether participation trophies for everyone should continue through middle school as well. Some parents think it will help with self-esteem, while other parents recall never getting participation trophies when they were growing up and think losing can be a good lesson.

Tasks:

Think about what you have learned in this module about physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development in middle childhood. In the Discussion Area, respond to the following:

  • Explain the type of parenting style that would lend itself well to creating a healthy self-esteem and why.
  • Describe a recommendation for the sports organizer, who wonders if everyone should receive a trophy just for participating.
  • What arguments can be made on both sides of the debate? Be sure that you discuss development and how social, cognitive, and physical development during middle childhood should factor into the decision.
  • Remember to support your responses by citing your weekly readings from the online lectures and the textbook.

Submission Details

  • By the due date assigned, post your 200- to 300-word response to the Discussion Area.
  • Through the end of the module, review and respond to the questions submitted by at least two of your classmates. Participate in the discussion by asking questions, providing or asking for statements of clarification, and drawing conclusions. Offer your own assessments insights and issues mentioned by your peers.
  • All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources. Use this APA Citation Helper as a convenient reference for properly citing resources.

What did you learn from your professional interview that helped you clarify your vision and the competencies necessary for your success?

Competencies in Psychology

As mentioned in the unit studies, you have covered a wide range of competencies essential to your success as a professional in psychology and a graduate learner. For this discussion, reflect on your career exploration in the unit studies and the competencies most relevant to your vision as a psychology practitioner-scholar. In your post, respond to the following questions:

  • What skills and abilities are most critical to your success in your psychology specialization?
  • What did you learn from your professional interview that helped you clarify your vision and the competencies necessary for your success?
  • What relevant information did you gather from the Practitioner Resources tab in the PSY5002 & PSY5005 Research Guide?
  • What additional information do you need to clarify your vision as a professional in the field of psychology?

Psychology Competencies

Throughout the course, you worked toward establishing a vision for your future career in psychology based on your passions, interests, and aspirations in the field. You have also covered a wide range of competencies relevant to your success as a psychology professional and graduate learner.

Workplace competencies are capabilities needed to accomplish tasks that are central to one’s profession. They comprise critical skills, knowledge, and attitudes. Understanding the competencies that are critical to your success is essential for preparing yourself to become a practitioner-scholar in your specialized field. You may know that education in such competencies is fundamental to Capella’s mission and philosophy. The syllabus of each course lists the competencies that learners will acquire and demonstrate in the course. At the levels of programs and specializations, these competencies are generalized as learner outcomes.

Investigate the following resources to identify the competencies needed for the specialization you are most interested in.

Following are the program outcomes for psychology and clinical psychology:

  • Determine the scientific merit of the professional literature.
  • Apply theoretical and research findings from the discipline of psychology to professional and academic activities.
  • Apply ethical principles and standards of psychology to academic and professional activities.
  • Embrace, respect, and respond to individual differences and diversity in the practice of psychology.
  • Communicate psychological concepts effectively using the professional standards of the discipline.

To find the outcomes for a specialization:

Visit the PsychologyJobs.com Web site and browse job openings by category or search with keywords related to your specialization. Make note of the competencies, requirements, and qualifications that employers desire for these positions.

Use these sources to develop a comprehensive list of about 10 competencies you will need for the specialization you are interested in. Be sure to note the sources of your information.

Reminder: Interviewing a Psychology Professional

If you have not already done so, as soon as possible, you should complete your interview with a professional in psychology who works in the specialization you are most interested in. Your questions should be formulated to find out about the nature of work in in the specialization, and what competencies, requirements and qualifications are needed for your success, and clarify appropriate goals and milestones. You will use this information in this unit’s discussion and in your final assignment.

How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)?

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1 in the Frost e-book, Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology, and the required journal articles for this week. Also review last week’s PSY635 Week Two Discussion Scenario (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. In that scenario, the three instructors realized there are limits to the insights they can gain through anonymous counting of discussion posts. The instructors would like to answer two additional research questions: (a) How do their students actually feel about the intervention? and (b) How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)?

In your initial post, compare the characteristics of appropriate research designs and recommend a qualitative research design that would facilitate answering the instructors’ additional questions. Explain the philosophical paradigm underlying the recommended approach. Evaluate the required articles for this week and describe the  assumptions the instructors might have to set aside as they enter into a qualitative research study. Be sure to identify any ethical issues that may apply to the research. Review the characteristics of the quantitative approach you described in the Week Two discussion. Explain the ways in which the quantitative approach and paradigm differs from the qualitative approach and paradigm you have recommended here.
