 Social Psychology

Research Paper

Throughout the program, you should be thinking of a research topic you would like to explore. In the capstone course (PSY-693), you will create a research proposal. To assist you in the creation of that proposal, you have decided on a research topic and begun collecting empirical studies to support the need for research. Your topic must relate to a basic social psychological principle; however it can fall into one of the applied subfields (forensic psychology, psychology of religion, industrial organization, health psychology, etc.).

For this assignment you will begin analyzing the current research around your chosen topic.

Using the empirical articles you have collected thus far, compare the current research for your chosen topic, in 2,400 words. The following information will assist in the analysis of the literature:

1. Introduction: This section should include your research question with a brief explanation of why the research is needed.

2. Compare and analyze the literature in the articles collected.

3. Compare the limitations of the studies you have collected.

4. A conclusion that includes how your research will add to the current field of research.

****Prepare a document that includes your research question(s), including how your research will add to the current research in your chosen field (from your Topic 3 assignment). Your document will include five scholarly, peer reviewed, empirical studies from the past 5 to 7 years. This section should include APA formatted citations for each article, including permalink or doi number.

proposal as described and questionnaire

Describe a resulting social problem in the context of social psychological theory and research. Interpret relevant theoretical perspectives derived from social psychology.

Prior to completing the summative assignment, consider the various topics studied by social psychologists:

  • Social thinking (attitudes, the self, judgment and decision making, etc.),
  • Social relations (attraction, aggression, prosocial behavior, etc.)
  • Social influence (conformity and obedience, persuasion, group processes, etc.)

Consider also your own interests and career aspirations and identify a problem of interest or relevance to you and amenable to a social psychological solution.  (For example, those interested in healthcare might consider programs that aspire to get kids moving or help adults stop smoking, enhance caregiving practices amongst the elderly, or encourage safe or healthy habits.).  For ideas—and/or to increase awareness of the broad range of applicability of social psychological insight—browse the solutions catalog available via Stanford SPARQ  at https://sparq.stanford.edu/solutions (Links to an external site.); you may also contact your instructor for specific suggestions.  Next, evaluate contributing social factors in light of theoretical principles and design an ethical, feasible intervention program.  (Refer to “Writing a Review Article for Psychological Bulletin” (Bem, 2016) for advice regarding academic writing of this nature.  In addition, review the guide for Graduate Writing (Links to an external site.), available through the Ashford Writing Center, including information on Writing a Literature Review (Links to an external site.).).

Your final paper should encompass the following:

  • Assess social behavior, including factors that influence social behavior as well as the role behavior plays in producing and perpetuating social issues and problems.
  • Describe a resulting social problem in the context of social psychological theory and research.
  • Interpret relevant theoretical perspectives derived from social psychology.
  • Distinguish scientific methods for studying this specific social problem.
  • Develop an original intervention strategy based on social psychological theory, research, and your evaluation of this specific social problem.
  • Suggest, propose, or assess career paths to which this insight may be applicable.

The Final Paper

Examine the object for a while, and then write out a brief description of the object (if necessary, take a picture of the object and include that with your assignment, pasting the picture into the submission text box.).

The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate that you can use aesthetic principles in your own reasoning, and to look at an object in a new, perhaps more open-minded, way. Ideally you should learn something about what you value, and gain some insight into how others might perceive the world a bit differently.

You must submit your responses to the assignment below in an essay format.

  • Your essay should be a minimum of 1000 words, not including your “Works Cited” section at the end of your essay.
  • Submit your responses in the text box provided when you click on “submit assignment.”
  • Do not attach any files to your submission. To include a picture of your object of analysis, use the “Image” tool available in the text submission box (signified by a “tree” in a box), or upload your picture to a website and include the URL in your essay.
  • Your essay will be automatically checked through the “Turn It In” system, so make sure that you are responsibly citing your sources, including quotation marks around quoted material, and using your own words for any summarizing or paraphrasing.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. First, find an object THAT YOU HAVE PHYSICALLY ENCOUNTERED (do not use things from online) that you do not normally consider art, or even aesthetically valuable. You may have encountered this item in a normal daily setting, or in a museum, art store, or other venue.
  2. Examine the object for a while, and then write out a brief description of the object (if necessary, take a picture of the object and include that with your assignment, pasting the picture into the submission text box.).
  3. Second, indicate (in approximately one or two paragraphs) why you normally would not consider the object art or aesthetically valuable. You should include what your original definition of art is (what do you normally consider art, and why), and you should clearly explain why this object does not meet your preconceived notions about art.
  4. Next, try to examine the object in a new way, using the principles of aesthetic reasoning (either functionalist or formalist, but not both). Give an argument, which integrates facts about the object and the aesthetic principles, for why someone could consider the object art or aesthetically valuable. The aesthetic principles you use must be true of the object. You must choose to use either functionalist principles or formalism, but NOT BOTH since functionalism and formalism are incompatible.  YOU CANNOT USE, OR EVEN MENTION, THE LAST PRINCIPLE ABOUT “NO ARGUMENT CAN BE GIVEN TO ESTABLISH AESTHETIC VALUE” (since the assignment REQUIRES YOU TO PROVIDE AN ARGUMENT, this last principle is not compatible with the assignment).

The more reasoning and depth to your analysis, the better.  You should submit an essay of 1000 to 2000 words in order to ensure you have developed your ideas adequately. Don’t forget to include your in-text citations and a Works cited section at the end of your essay.

Explain how your views on spirituality might impact the counseling process.

The American Counseling Association (ACA) recognizes a person’s cultural identity, spirituality, and religion or lack thereof, is central to how a person views the world. Thus, it has a great influence on a person’s daily functioning. Therefore you must understand where spirituality and culture fit into a client’s life and how spirituality and culture impacts a person’s perspective of the world. You also must consider how spirituality and culture influence a person’s behavior and belief systems which can ultimately impact the development or perpetuation of vicarious trauma. As a counselor, counselor educator, and supervisor you must be comfortable as well as competent in addressing spirituality and cultural issues related to the treatment and prevention of vicarious trauma.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a brief description of your definition of spirituality. Then, explain how you would approach spirituality and culture in the treatment of vicarious trauma with future supervisees and clients/and or students. Explain how your views on spirituality might impact the counseling process. Finally, describe one skill counselors need to be spiritually and culturally competent when treating clients with vicarious trauma and why. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your points.
