The use of complementary or alternative health modalities is highly used among different countries around the world. The use of alternative medicine has been used treat hypertension, which is currently one of the main causes of heart disease, kidney disease and stroke worldwide (Jacobsen, 2019). Some of the most common form of alternative practices are: acupuncture, qigong, and tuina (Fan et al., 2019). Acupuncture is a practice that originated in traditional Chinese medicine and is currently being practice in different countries (“Use of acupuncture”, 2018). Just in the UK, about four million acupuncture sessions were performed in 2009 (“Use of acupuncture”, 2018). This alternative modality involves the insertion of needles to specific areas of the human body and the use of burned herb known as moxibustion, use to warm the body (“Use of acupuncture”, 2018). Qigong, is another type of alternative medicine that involves medication, controlled breathing and controlled exercise movements performed to help increase the flow of blood (Fan et al., 2019). This form of therapy has helped improved the health conditions of patients with cardiovascular diseases, asthma and cancer (Fan et al., 2019). Lastly, Tuina massage involves pressing on specific body parts for the purpose of treatment (Fan et al., 2019). This form of therapy has been used to reduce the symptoms caused by anxiety. It has also been effective in treating patients who suffer of hypertension and insomnia (Fan et al., 2019).
