NGSS Nature of Science Reflection

Read over the eight Nature of Science categories that the Next Generation Science Standards put out. There will be some that we did not cover very deeply yet in class. Choose at least two Nature of Science categories you find interesting and discuss them in some detail. In your response, answer at least two of the following questions:

Appendix H – The Nature of Science in the Next Generation Science Standards 4.15.13.pdfPreview the document (Attached in the additional materials)

Do you agree or disagree with a particular category, or does one surprise you? Why?
Do you think some categories are more important than others? Why?
Is a certain point too vague, leaving you with questions? Why?
Would you find certain points easier to teach than others? Why?
Your response should be no more than 1 double-spaced page.  An “A” paper will be one that goes deeper than simply restating what you read. Put your response in your own words, organize your thinking, and defend your opinions with textual evidence.

Innovation, Creativity, and Organizational Behavior

On page 44 of the Osterwalder and Pigneur text you are invited to sketch out a Business Model Canvas—a
task in both creativity and critical thinking/analysis. What insights about your company or organization did you
gain? On page 116-117 read about patterns that might help you clearly distinguish between what exists in your
business model the “as-is” state and what you want to or plan to build the “to-be” state. Engage at least two of
your colleagues in a discussion of these posts.
What drives innovation in your workplace? What role do you have as an individual? Does your organization
provide incentives or methods to support innovative ideas? Engage at least two of your colleagues in a
discussion of these posts.

Ebola virus disease

In October 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that travelers arriving in the United States from the Ebola affected countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia who do not have a fever or symptoms of the disease (including health care workers who have cared for patients with Ebola virus disease) should be actively monitored but do not need to be quarantined. However, after a New York physician, Craig Spencer, was diagnosed with the infection shortly after returning from Guinea, where he had cared for patients with Ebola, the states of New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Illinois announced that they would implement mandatory quarantine policies. Describe the ethical challenges these state and federal policies pose in terms of balancing individual rights and public health. Do you believe that a mandatory quarantine was justified? Why or why not?

Black Males

Read the passage below:
Mothers Role in African-American Male Incarceration. Some studies have determined that African American
mothers are responsible for causing, and thus remedying, any challenges they and their children encounter, to
include involvement with the criminal justice system (Elliott & Reid 2018; Gurusami 2017, 2019). Having long
been seen as unfit mothers, these women go on to face heightened scrutiny and punitive treatment in their
parenting practices making their motherhood status contested and questionable (Collins 2000; Roberts 2002;
Schram et al. 2009; Soss, Fording, and Schram 2011) and putting on the shoulders of Black mothers the
responsibility to solve at the family level, problems that need solutions at a social and cultural level.
What I need for you to do is to describe these studies.
What type of study was it? who were the participants? how many participants? What is the methodology? What
are the findings?
