In the Ancient Greek world (the world of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, often regarded as the birthplace of philosophy) a “symposium” was a banquet held after a meal, an “after party” of sorts that usually included drinking, dancing, recitals and engaging conversations on the topics of the day.
For our purposes in this course, the Symposium discussions will not involve dancing, recitals or a banquet, but they will provide food for thought on current ethical issues and direct application of the ethical theory discussed in each of these weeks.
It is almost impossible these days to turn on the news or log onto social media without encountering a controversy that cries out for ethical discussion. For these Symposium discussions, your instructor will choose a topic of current ethical interest and a resource associated with it for you to read or watch. Your task is to consider how the ethical theory of the week might be used to examine, understand or evaluate the issue.
This week, you will consider how virtue ethics applies to a controversy, dilemma, event, or scenario selected by your instructor. It is a chance for you to discuss together the ethical issues and questions that it raises, your own response to those, and whether that aligns with or does not align with a virtue ethics approach. The aim is not to simply assert your own view or to denigrate other views, but to identify, evaluate, and discuss the moral reasoning involved in addressing the chosen issue.
Your posts should remain focused on the ethical considerations, and at some point in your contribution you must specifically address the way a virtue ethicist would approach this issue by explaining and evaluating that approach.
If you have a position, you should strive to provide reasons in defense of that position.
This is our final symposium, and our final video is a tour de force. I would LOVE for all of you to watch this video all the way through, but that is a lot to ask, I know, so watch AT LEAST a 30 minute segment, or jump around and watch segments that together add up to about 30 minutes. There is an amazing amount of information to discuss here. I am a member of the Heterodox Academy that Haidt founded. I would LOVE to hear your views on this material. Professor Haidt is joined here by the acclaimed and controversial clinical psychologist, Jordan Peterson. Their interaction is quite wide-ranging and exciting. Let’s see what we can make of this material in light of all that we have been discussing in our class so far!

Discussion 1: Virtue and Teleology
To ensure that your initial post starts its own unique thread, do not reply to this post. Instead, please click the “Reply” link above this post.
Please read the general discussion requirements above, as well as the announcements explaining the discussion requirements and answering the most frequently asked questions. If you are still unsure about how to proceed with the discussion, please reply to one of those announcements or contact your instructor.
Please carefully read and think about the entire prompt before composing your first post. This discussion will require you to have carefully read Chapter 5 of the textbook, as well as the assigned portions of Aristotle’s (1931) Nicomachean Ethics.
.
Aristotle’s account of ethics is “teleological”, which means that our understanding of virtue and living well is based on a sense of the “telos” (function, purpose, or end) of something (see Aristotle’s text and the textbook for the full account).
1. Engage with the text:
Using at least one quote from the required text(s), explain the relation between virtue and living well on Aristotle’s account, and briefly describe some of the key characteristics of the virtues.
2. Reflect on yourself:
Identify an area of your life in which virtues are needed to do well. Explain what the “telos” of that role or activity is, what virtues are needed and why they are needed, and what would be lost if someone tried to be successful in that activity who didn’t exercise the virtues. This might be a role you have, a vocation or career, a hobby, or something common to all of us.
3. Reflect on virtue:
In what ways do the virtues you identify display the characteristics Aristotle describes? For instance, you could explain whether they occupy an intermediate between too much and too little of some quality, how they would affect one’s emotions as well as one’s actions, etc.
4. Discuss with your peers:
Discuss with your peers the answers they gave to these questions, and offer your own additional reflections, questions, challenges, etc. You could consider possible ways in which the virtues may conflict with each other, or may conflict with the virtues needed in other areas of one’s life; whether practicing virtue in these activities may lead to less success as measured by, say, financial benefit or recognition, and so on.

Please read all attached documents for they explain the assignment and provide additional information to help address the exam question. Please let me know if you need any additional information to complete this assignment. I will also attach a copy of an outline for you to follow so you will know how to answer the question. Make sure you read the score guide as well as a guide when answering the question.
VERY IMPORTANT: Please pay close attention to grammar, spelling, punctuation, use of citations, etc. DO NOT use transition words such as: furthermore, nevertheless, moreover, etc.
Exam QUESTION 1:
•    Identify three theories commonly applied to research in your specialization (Advanced Studies in Human Behavior/ School of Counseling and Human Services).
•    Compare and contrast the identified theories.
•    Synthesize your findings and evaluate which theory is best suited to your proposed (or School-approved) dissertation topic.
Three theories I want to use to address this question:
1. Social learning theory
2. Cognitive Dissonance
3. Cognitive transformation theory: (This is the theory I’m using for my School-approved dissertation topic ) Giordano’s cognitive transformation theory (Giordano, Cernkovich & Rudolph, 2002) to understand the thought process and perceptions associated with reintegration among formerly incarcerated women. (Please read my research paper to understand the research)
Writing Instructions:
While there is no required page length for the comprehensive examination, it is essential that each component of the comprehensive examination question be substantively addressed in accordance with the Comprehensive Examination Evaluation Scoring Rubrics. Verify that you have satisfied the requirements shown in the Comprehensive Examination Rubric, which is found in Appendix C in the Comprehensive Examination Manual.
All responses will be reviewed holistically in alignment with grading criteria, regardless of length.  However, satisfactory responses to comprehensive examination questions have typical characteristics:  A high quality response to a comprehensive examination question generally incorporates no fewer than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles, avoids referencing more than 3 textbooks and ranges between 12 and 17 pages in length, not including cover page, questions pages, and reference pages. Comprehensive examination responses should be limited to no more than 17 pages for each question, excluding cover page, question page, and reference pages, as readers are not required to read beyond 17 pages.
Both foundational and recent scholarly literature (published within the last 5 years) should be incorporated into each exam response as applicable.  Doctoral dissertations are typically not considered peer-reviewed scholarly work and as such should not be included in the 20 recommended references for the comp exam responses.  However, one or two dissertations that provide new information that may be of particular relevance to the learner’s topic may be used in addition to the other references.
Within the comp questions, learners may be asked to identify their proposed (or School-approved) dissertation research topic, the focus of which needs to be an approved program of research topic within the learner’s specialization.  While the focus of the learner’s proposed dissertation research topic may be an approved program of research topic within the learner’s specialization for comprehensive examination purposes, it does not guarantee that the proposed dissertation research topic will be School-approved for dissertation purposes.
Include a separate reference list for each question’s response.  Sample references for a book, a journal article with a DOI, and a journal article without a DOI may be found on the next page. Please consult the APA Publication Manual, 6th Edition regarding other types of references.
For your convenience, the appendix of this template includes an overview of the formatting and style rules of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Please consult the APA Publication Manual, 6th Edition for clarification and/or more information.
