Appendix B- Discussion Evaluation Rubric
Remember that integrating your own thoughts with evidence from the literature is an effective to
demonstrate synthesis and critical analysis. Sometimes a few short direct quotes add value to your
work. But remember that quotes generally serve to share someone else’s thoughts, rather than your analysis.
It is expected that students to follow the rubric.
10 points are possible for each discussion and will be assigned as follows:

discussion box instead of attaching it in a document. Be sure to review the grading rubric for weekly discussions that is included in appendix B of the syllabus.

2) isolation and distance

3) self- reliance

4) lack of anonymity

5) outsider/insider

6) old-timer/newcomer

The six concepts listed above are explored in chapters 1 – 4 of your text by Winters. Please choose one of the key concepts listed above and explore it more fully, synthesizing with at least one of the topics listed below (these are addressed in the Module 3 assigned readings).

thoughts on multiculturalism, particularly as it relates to education

Read passage on multiculturalism from Dinesh DSouza. The essay should be personal, reflecting your thoughts, not a mere restating of DSouza. It may touch on experiences that you have had in encountering other cultures. Or it may involve assumptions that other people have made about you because of your ethnic or racial background. You might want to comment about how you were taught about multiple cultures as part of your schooling. Or how aspects of your culture were omitted from your education. You may even want to ask a parent or a grandparent what they were taught and compare that to what you were taught.

Memo: Positive Message

Assignment:
As the Human Resources Manager at XYZ Industries, Inc., it is your pleasure to announce the
addition of annual performance-based bonuses for mid-level managers and above. These
bonuses will require annual performance reviews to discern the amount of the bonus. Draft a
memo explaining this scenario to this specific group of employees.

Address the memo to all mid-level managers and above at your company.

Recommended Organization
1. Header
– Begin your memo with the four standard memo heads (Date, To, From, Subject).

2.Body/Discussion
– In the first paragraph of the body, start off with the good news. Memos do not begin with
greetings or salutations. Explain what factors could have contributed to this new development
(i.e. increased sales, raising stock price, etc.) and why the decision was made to reward
employees with the surplus funds.

– The second paragraph is where you explain the new process that the employees can expect.
Outline the way that reviews will be handled, and by whom. Feel free to be creative (yet
somewhat realistic) when outlining how the performance scores will translate into bonuses (i.e.
tier system, seniority, contribution value).

– In the third paragraph, be sure to validate any anticipated concerns employees may have about
this adjustment. Explain the greater benefit in the long-term this decision provides and
conclude your memo by indicating how the reader may contact you if he/she has any
questions. In general, this section should be short & sweet, making sure that the employees
know what is expected of them
