1)Find an article from the journal (Psychological Science). Be sure to choose a “research article” in which there are clearly labeled sections called

“Method,” “Results,” and “Discussion.” In other words, avoid review articles which talk about a topic of research rather than report on research. Also, be

sure to choose an article that is manageable, that you can understand, and that is interesting to you.

2)Print or make a photocopy of the article to use for your report so you can underline and make your own notes.

3)Type your report, in the following format, using the headings listed in the following guidelines:

a.Title of the article

b.Authors and their affiliations (where they do their research)

c.Name, volume, number (if there is one) and page numbers of the journal in which article is published

d. HypothesisYou can usually find a statement of the hypothesis near the end of the Introduction section of the article. The hypothesis statement will begin

something like “In experiment 1 we tested whether….” Or “The purpose of this experiment was to test whether…” or you may find it in the form a question.

e.Method Describe briefly, in your own words, the procedure used in the study, the participants, and any special equipment, scales, or questionnaires used.

f.ResultsFind a description of the results in the first few sentences of the “Discussion” section which follows the “Results” section in a typical article.

Give a brief description of the findings and how the researchers interpreted their findings

g.Relevance of the findingsWrite a couple sentences describing what you think is the relevance of the findings. How does the research add to our understanding

of behavior and mental processes? Also offer any criticism you might have of the study.

4)Your report should be typed or word processed, double-spaced, using good grammar and without misspellings. Papers generally run about 3-5 pages.

5)When writing this paper, as well as any paper, always use your own words to report on what you’ve read. Never use someone else’s text or ideas without

citing them. If you use the author’s phrasing, be sure to use quotation marks and follow it with the author’s name, year of publication, and page number, all

in parentheses. Avoid long quotes. Show that you understand what you read.

6)At the top of the paper type your Name, U -number and your section number. Use your U-number in the file name (e.g., “U12345678 Essay 1.docx”)

The Quadrennial Homeland Security Review Report (QHSR) is a regular quadrennial review and assessment of homeland security and identifies
homeland security missions and goals to protect the United States. The five missions and goals are identified on page 15 of the textbook reading.
Choose one of the five QHSR missions. Conduct research on the mission and goals using the CSU Online Library (e.g., the International Security and
Counter Terrorism Reference Center database) or other scholarly resources, and discuss the following issues:
Choose one mission, and explain the purpose of the mission and goals.
Conduct research, and identify a hazard or risk where the mission has been utilized to protect the United States.
Analyze and evaluate whether the goals of the mission were accomplished.
Discuss the outcome and whether the mission and goals require revision to improve homeland security.
The essay should be a minimum of two pages in length, and it should contain a title page and reference page. The title and reference pages do not
count toward meeting the minimum page requirement.
Format the paper using APA style. Write the essay in a formal writing style rather than a conversational writing style. Include two scholarly references,
one of which can be the textbook. At least one source should be from the CSU Online Library since it is a valuable resource for homeland security
information.
