Often organizations maintain the same structure for many years and wonder why they are having difficulty meeting their goals. Some of this may be a lack of knowledge of the impact the organization’s structure has on its success. Some of this may stem from managers and top leaders not being aware of the availability of different types of organizational structures. For this Assignment, you examine ideas for creating a structure that is unique to a particular organization. It is important to know the impact of structure on an organization. Consider whether the structure that exists is helping your company achieve its objectives or if the structure has outlived its usefulness.

Review this week’s resources. Think about your current organization (or one that you have some knowledge and/or experience with) or one that you have read about in the news. Be prepared to do additional research on the company to be sure you have enough information to complete the Assignment. Prepare your paper using proper APA format. Include proper APA citations and references where appropriate.

The Assignment (5–6 pages): Note: Be sure to begin your paper with an introduction paragraph that includes the purpose, your position on the topic, and how the paper will be outlined. (This should be done for each paper Assignment throughout the course.) Your paper should include the following: Based on the organization you selected, provide background information of the organization (e.g., history, type of business, business function). Describe the current structure using both Morgan’s use of metaphors and Bolman and Deal’s use of frames. Explain whether the current organizational structure is the best structure for the organization or if you would recommend a different structure. In either case, provide evidence for choosing the structure you selected. Note: Include proper APA citations and references.

Course Reflections: 50%(5 reflections worth 10 points each)
5 times over the course of the quarter you will write a one page reflection that critically reflects on the topic of the day, integrating my lectures, the readings and your own thoughts. The text is presented in a way that takes issues in education and invites you to consider different perspectives and ways of looking at those issues. When you do the readings and contemplate my lectures, the reflections will invite you to think about what position you take on the issue in question.

It’s important to remember that this assignment isNOTinviting you to summarize the topic; it is acritical reflection- this means that I am interested in your assessment of the topic in question.  The syllabus clearly sets out the expectations for submissions:

Define the issue?
What are the two perspectives?
What did the lecture add to your understanding of the topic?
How do you position yourself on the issue?

The brief nature of the submission means that no more than 1/2 of each submission should be devoted to a summary of the topic (and ideally, less than that) and an articulation of the2 perspectivesoffered – just enough to demonstrate that you understand the contents of the reading.

The remaining portion should be devoted to integrating any meaningful additions from the lectures and – most importantly -how you position yourself on the issue(this is the critical part) if, for instance, you are writing about the Common Core chapter and you decide that you think the Common Core is a great idea – that’s fine, now tell me WHY YOU THINK ITS A GREAT IDEA?! – because the submissions are so short, there is no room for rambling on – get to the point and make your case!
