“Muse & Drudge” is the title of a Harryette Mullen book of poems, and sets the tone for this unit and discussion.

For your first discussion, write TWO STURDY PARAGRAPHS ( and then one extra bit ) on the following:

PARA 1)  After reading about the NINE MUSES and their attributes, and then reading our selection of poets, your task for discussion is to MATCH OUT one of the Muses with one or more poets– in other words, which one of these muses would have inspired your chosen poet– discuss, and quote from a poem or poems as to why you feel this way. EXAMPLE : when I read the attributes for Thalia, I can think of at least one poet that matches out well with her, but ALL of the muses and poets are fair game for pairing.

PARA 2) We’re in this moment now– we’ve been stuck, and now we’re heading toward something, with much suffering and loss, and perhaps some glimmers of hope. Speak to what YOU ARE GOING THROUGH NOW, and which muse or poet could most INSPIRE you or at least help you COPE and go on.

Letter to a Legislator

In this exercise, you will write a two-page letter to your state or federal representative about a health-care issue currently being discussed/debated. Research where your representative stands on a current health-care issue as well as where the medical profession, such as professional organizations, practicing medical professionals, patients, and other advocates, stands on the issue. In your letter, you will state why you either agree or disagree with your representatives position on the issue and provide references to support your position. Provide a title page and a reference page. This does not count toward the total page count.

Identify a health-care issue that is currently being debated nationally or at the state level.
Write a two-page letter explaining why you agree with your representatives position or not.

Paper on a Contemporary Public Health Issue

Students will integrate literature accessed from reliable epidemiological and research databases to synthesize information pertaining to public health practice. Read three published journal articles on one public health issue. For each article, describe the target population, determinants of health, health disparities, and methods of health promotion (i.e. counseling, education, screening, policy enforcement) to address this issue. Length of paper will range between 3 to 5 pages. Please include a reference page using APA format citing literature from the past 5 years.

Outstanding (13-15 points): This paper integrates peer-reviewed journal articles that are relevant to a specific public health issue. The paper offers a clear description of the target population for each journal article. The next part of the paper clearly identifies and describes biological/physiological and/or psychosocial determinants of health for each target population across the journal articles. The paper then critically reflects on the implications of identified health determinants on health disparities and offers examples of potential health disparities that currently exist and/or could potentially arise. Last part of the paper offers feasible recommendations for future health promotion efforts to address these health disparities.
