If you want to talk about this current political moment as one about “refugee” or “stateless” time then do so. This class is supposed to help you talk about anything! Taiwan is thinking about accepting Hong Kongners as refugees , and many are called the US a failed state. There are estimated to be anywhere between 11 and 20 million undocumented aliens in the US. The estimates vary because this population is not easily counted. In addition, enforcing the immigration laws is problematic because there are different views about the seriousness of the problem. The federal government has sole jurisdiction to enforce the immigration laws, but some states intentionally obstruct federal enforcement efforts and label themselves as sanctuary cities. The caravans from Central America continue to be a problem for the Department of Homeland Security. Some consider migration problems to be a crisis while others do not. Since President Trump was elected in 2016 the immigration debate has increased in intensity.

The forum consists of 3 assignments and will assist you in formulating a final report regarding the immigration debate. The continuum of official responses to the immigration problem range from allowing open borders and full amnesty through strict enforcement of existing immigration laws and the removal of all undocumented aliens from the US and everything in between.

People are often drawn to sustainability when they identify a problem, encounter a difficulty, or experience something that makes them change their views about the world. We recognize an unsustainable situation now or in the future, and we look for ways to counteract that predicament.  Sometimes, this recognition is gradual and subtlewe begin to notice that our communities are not as clean as they used to be, or we are asked to choose paper or plastic at the grocery store checkoutand our thinking changes over time.  Other times, though, we recognize the need for sustainability when we encounter or perceive a disaster or an emergent critical situation.  Drastic changes or disruptions in the world can force us to reconsider our current ways of doing things, and sustainable solutions can help to minimize the impact of catastrophes and crises and to lessen their impact in the future.

Chapter Three examines crises and disasters and their relationship to sustainability. What is the relationship between human activity and recent crises and disasters involving sustainability?  Do you have any direct experience with a crisis or disaster that somehow related to sustainability?
