For this Primary Source Analysis assignment, you will analyze Speech: Abraham Lincoln and the War With Mexico in the previous Module slide, and complete a Primary Source Analysis.

Guidelines
The purpose of this assignment is to build your analytical skills. These questions are designed to help you better understand the document and its historical significance. Your job here is to fully answer these questions: simple one-word answers will not suffice. In order to get full credit on this assignment you must fully explain your answers and give examples from the source. The point is for you to come out of this with a very good understanding of these documents. Fully answering these questions will help you do so.

Since you will quote from the source assigned in order to illustrate your analysis, it is required that you include citations and give credit for use of the source.

Expected minimum length of the Primary Source Analysis assignment is 500 words. This length does not include the Chicago-style footnote citation or any heading and title details. The following questions direct you in completing an analysis of the source assigned, and you should compile your analysis in essay form with your answers as part of paragraphs.

Identification: Who wrote or created the document and what makes that person significant to the time period of the document/source?
Audience: Who is the intended audience and why is that group significant to the time period of the document/source?
Main idea: Give a short summary of the document.
Analysis: What is the purpose of this document? What details lead you to this conclusion? What questions does this source raise?
Evidence: Give specific examples from the document that support your answer for question 4 (make sure to use footnotes as your citations for the source).
Keep focused on developing ideas about the significance of the document based on these questions, and include your position (as an argument, thesis, or description of that significance), in the section of your submitted assignment that answers question 4.

Family Holiday Traditions Organization and Outlining

Use the outline on the upload box, Speech Outline Template.

READ THE CHAPTER IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH THE ASSIGNMENT

Using the topic of Family Traditions at Holidays, generate two or three main points. Next, generate several subtopics and sub-sub topics. You could organize your speech chronologically, geographically, or around feasts or religious activities. You could compare your family traditions to someone from another culture. You could organize according to food/gifts/songs.  Whatever logical presentation helps the audience to follow your train of thought!  When we do this activity in a face-to-face class, I am always amazed at what students come up with when working in their groups!  View at least 2 of your classmate’s outlines.  Point out any corrections or non-logical subordination of points.  Give kudos for clever organization!

Use the sample outline review(Speech Outline Template) the document Preview the document for reference what your outline should look like.  This is a brief outline of supporting points. No need to go into great detail,  just provide main points and sub-points! You will upload your outline to the Discussion Board. You may introduce your outline with a brief description of how you chose to organize your speech.  Remember, this is simply an overview of a potential speech and how you would choose to organize it!

Post original response to discussion questions. This posting should be well thought out and substantial enough to get your point across and to give others material to respond to.

Research Paper on Interest Groups

Please select one of the following topics found on the list below concerning interest groups and the issues they represent.  You can review what interest groups do by referring to Chapter 11 in your textbook.

For instance, if you happen to choose gay rights, you have to research at least one interest group that supports  gay rights (e.g. National Gay & Lesbian Task Force) and at least one interest group that opposes anti gay rights (e.g. Traditional Values Coalition).

You must then research the websites of the interest groups representing the issue you have selected to write about.  The interest groups you select must be from the United States.

In your paper you must answer/summarize the following:

1.  Define what an interest group is.

2.  What is your opinion on the issue you chose to research? (no more than two paragraphs should be devoted to this section)

3.  Summarize the information you find in the websites of the interest groups you selected to research.  What does each interest group have to say about the issues they are representing?

4.  How do the interest groups  you are researching embed themselves into politics?  Do they endorse      candidates?  Do they provide campaign funds?

5.  What do the two sides say about the groups that oppose their views?

6.  What incentives do these interest groups offer people?  Are they trying to recruit people to join their interest groups?  Do they ask for donations?  Be specific.

Issues can include the following:

Abortion

Affirmative Action

Campaign/Political Reform

Drugs

Education

Environment

Euthanasia (Right to Die)

Gay Rights

Gun Control

Health Care

Immigration

Labor

Military/Veterans

Social Security

Taxes/Taxation

Women’s Issues

Things to Include in Your Paper:

1)  Use MLA formatting while writing your paper.

2) Introduction that states the purpose of the paper and an overview of what it is about.

3) Detailed responses to the questions.  This will mean youll have to find outside research to help answer the questions. Reputable sources means good, solid academic sources.  I would suggest that you utilize the Northwest Vista College library.  About.com, ProCon.org, and Wikipedia are not solid academic sources. Even though I’m asking for your opinion at the beginning of the paper, please do not let that dominate your paper.  I want to know what the groups are offering regarding information.

4) Conclusion to summarize the paper.

5) Include a cover page.

6) Include a reference page.

7) Include at least 4 references (one for each website of the interest groups your are researching, at least one to describe the issue, and at least one to describe what an interest group does).
