The End of Homework

Distinguish between ideology and indoctrination. How are they related? What key aspects of ideology

were highlighted in this discussion? Do a little Internet research and provide your own definition of

ideology. What features of our thinking process would signal that we have incorporated ideology into our

mental processes? (400)
The authors of The End of Homework believe that giving children heavy burdens of homework is a waste

of a childhood. It takes time away from friends, family and games, and indoctrinates them into a work ethic

that encourages total sacrifice of individual life. Do you agree? Why or why not? Make sure to include in

your analysis the fact that there is no evidence to suggest that homework benefits younger children. (400)

children, and limits learning. Boston: Beacon Press. and I have attached the course discussion regarding

The Interrelationships of Socio-Cultural Influences in Healthcare

Within this activity, you will explore how determinants of health such as poverty, behavior, education, and

income are related. One common element underlies poor health: poverty. Money is required to purchase

the essentials of health such as food, clothing, shelter, clean water, education, and access to preventative

health services. Each day in nursing, you are faced with persons from varying economic, social, and

cultural backgrounds. In addition to varying backgrounds, you will also experience differing patient values

and preferences related to their individual health and behavior. Caring for the vulnerable, at-risk, and

aging populations is an essential competency for nursing. Therefore, we need to explore the

interrelationships of socio-cultural influences, behavioral influences, as well as economic and non-

economic barriers to healthcare to improve our knowledge. In doing so, we will be able to plan specific

interventions designed to help achieve healthier outcomes. You will have the opportunity to examine

poverty, behavior, and other determinants of health in Sentinel City®. As providers of care, BSN nurses

need to understand how these are related and impact the health of our patients.

Service Learning and Reflection

Service learning integrates meaningful community service and reflection to enhance the learning

experience.

Review the International Council of Nurses Position Statements and enter Sentinel City and Sentinel Town

and explore all areas of the city and town. Select one ICN Position Statement and create a service-

learning plan based upon need in a specific area. Reflect upon the nurse’s role in health promotion that

incorporates the significance of service learning.

Tip: Students struggle with the terminology of “service learning”. Service learning is learning/educational

activities that benefit others and the community. Such as health fairs, educational health announcements,

wellness programs, health services, prevention education, etc. Service learning for this activity is

learning activities for a population of people within the simulation of your choice that is paired with

structured preparation from a nurse’s point of view.
