Local Sporting Event

for this assignment, attend a local sporting event in your community.  This could be a professional game, an athletic race or competition, or  even a high school match. Take notes during the event, keeping track of  exciting plays but also noting factors like a coach’s involvement, the  reactions of teammates, or any other noteworthy occurrence. After the  event, compose a recap as if you were going to publish it as a press  release. Your written response should contain the following components:

  1. Background   In two to three sentences, relate to your instructor what event you  attended, when and where it was held, and for which platforms you are  writing this recap.
  2. Communication Assessment  In 150-200 words, describe the types of communication you observed at  this event. Were there any reporters from local TV stations or  newspapers at the event? Was the event broadcast on social media? Did  the event have an announcer? Was the scoreboard digital? Think outside  the box about how technology influenced the event not only for the  spectators attending, but for those hearing about it after the fact.
  3. Initial Game Recap   In 100 words or less, craft a succinct but informative summary of  what happened in the event, something that you could write up while the  event was in action and post immediately when it ended. If the event was  a game, you may want to include the final score along with some details  about what made the event interesting. This communication is meant to  be straightforward and to the point, letting fans know how the event  played out.
  4. Main Recap Elaborate on your  Initial Game Recap and round it out into an article that could be  published in a newspaper, sent out as a press release, or posted on a  blog or online news site. In 500-700 words, provide more detail and  context for what happened at the event, perhaps in a chronological  format. If you had a chance to speak with the coach or any of the  players, you may want to include quotes from a pre- or post-game  interview. Or maybe you could spin the recap from a human-interest  angle, focusing on the efforts of an individual player.

this has to be a sporting event in the US

The Gospel of Thomas

Description

  1. The Gospel of Thomas is another “gospel”, written much later than the four gospels in the Christian bible, and is considered an example of “Gnostic” Christianity (because of its focus on knowledge [“gnosis”]). It is not included in the Christian canon; however, it does give us insight into early Christian “Gnostic” views about Jesus that were eventually rejected by the mainstream church. How does the Gospel of Thomas compare with the canonical gospels we read this semester (Mark and John)? What is similar and what is strikingly different?
  2. What seems to be most important about Jesus, according to the Gospel of Thomas?
  3. Why do you think the early church rejected the Gospel of Thomas from inclusion in the Christian canon?
  4. In the second reading, by Irenaeus of Lyons, we have a second-century Christian who rejects Gnostic Christianity like that of the Gospel of Thomas. What are his critiques of these types of Christians? How would Irenaeus describe what he thinks is authentic Christianity?

Paraphrasing

Description

Can you paraphrase the summary below

Summary:

Ron Amundson, a philosophy instructor, takes issue with Lyall Watson’s theory of the Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon, despite Watson’s use of information from respected scientific articles. In the 1950s some Japanese Macaques being studied by primatologists learned to wash potatoes before eating them. According to Watson, once a certain number of the macaques (symbolically one hundred) had learned to wash their potatoes, all the macaques attained a group consciousness and instantly began washing potatoes, including macaque troops in other places. Watson claims that he had to discern this miracle out of the sketchy details given in the scientific literature, but in reality the sources he cites carefully account for the slow and orderly development of this trait. Watson’s claims about this phenomenon, and his claim that the researchers were reluctant to reveal the truth, are easily refuted by the source materials he cites; however, his own arguments do help expose four typical methods of pseudoscience. 1) Pseudoscientists claim to have sources of information and explanations that scientists either withhold from the public or are not clever enough to understand. 2) Pseudoscientists prefer paranormal explanations even when natural, logical explanations are easily available. 3) Once a paranormal explanation is proposed, it tends to be amplified as it passed around, so that Watson’s distortions become even more bizarre when others such as Ken Keyes retell it. 4) The similarities among different pseudoscience theories seem to support each other, amplifying belief in the paranormal. Amundson is sympathetic with people who believe that the Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon might be a pathway to nuclear disarmament; however, these are false hopes. Watson, though, is mainly interested in promoting sensationalist paranormal beliefs that really amount to lies spun by unscientific methods of determining truth.
