Do you think it works?  Would you suggest something else?  If so, provide what you think may look and work better and why.

The Gestalt Principle of Perception suggests that our brains like to organize information that we encounter, helping us make sense of what is in our world. We often place things that we see into patterns or forms and is highly cultural – what we fit to form/pattern is associated with what we grew up with or interact with on a daily basis. In the marketing world, many psychological theories are utilized to help sell products and gain loyalty; this is also true with company logos. Companies will spends thousands of dollars to create a logo that is constructed with simple images, but when viewed as a whole the perception offers a different story.

  1. For this assignment, you will select one of the main principles: figure-ground, proximity, similarity, continuity, or closure. Using your own words, please define this principle.
  2. Then, you are to look through the newspaper, magazines, or the Internet to view a logo that matches the principle you have selected and defined. You will embed the image into your document.
  3. Please discuss how the image matches the Gestalt principle that you have identified, again using references to back up your thoughts and the principle at work.
  4. Do you think it works?  Would you suggest something else?  If so, provide what you think may look and work better and why.
  5. Assignment should be 2-3 paragraphs including discussion and questions, including APA references.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Refer to the LopesWrite Technical Support articles for assistance.

Identify the strengths or weaknesses for each element, and determine if the information about that element supports (or opposes) the use of your selected test in the field and population to be served.

This assignment is a culmination of the previous assignments you have completed during this course. In this assignment, you will synthesize your previous research as well as conduct research on the final element in the Code, Element 9. Element 9 states that a test user, “evaluate(s) the available evidence on the performance of test takers of diverse subgroups . . . determine(s) to the extent feasible which performance differences may have been caused by factors unrelated to the skills being assessed.” Together, the previous course assignments and this current one involving Element 9 will provide you with the data, research, and literature reviews across all nine elements of the Code to assist your decision-making process about the appropriate selection of a test.

For this final assignment:

  • Locate reviews or research related to how Element 9 applies to your selected test. If the research or reviews do not address this element in any way, then you will need to cite the references you reviewed and note that they were lacking in in addressing this element, drawing appropriate conclusions for when a test is lacking such evidence.
  • Synthesize all of the data and information you gathered on your selected test throughout the course and identify highlights, both positive and negative, both advantages and disadvantages, according to all nine elements of the Code. See the link in the resources about the Meaning of Synthesis.
  • Evaluate your selected test based on these data and draw a conclusion about whether it is a test that you would select, recommend, or even defend, if necessary in practice. Note: You should not merely copy and paste your earlier assignments for the final paper. Instead you will be synthesizing the research you completed for each element into a summary of that element that you will offer in support of your final evaluation. (For example, note that the technical quality element (that is, Element 5) will be only a synthesis and evaluation and not a repeat of the annotated bibliography you completed in Unit 5.)
    • Identify the strengths or weaknesses for each element, and determine if the information about that element supports (or opposes) the use of your selected test in the field and population to be served.
    • Incorporate recommendations about ways to improve the selected test.
    • Review all of your evaluations for each element and recommended improvements to the test, and write an overall evaluation and determination about the use of your selected test. Would you recommend this test to a school district or business that you are employed as a consultant? Would you be able to defend the use of this test in a court proceeding?

Organize your paper using the following headings:

  1. Title page (required). (One page.)
  2. Abstract (required). (One page.)
  3. The Code of Fair Testing Practices in Education. (A minimum of four pages. For each element, identify strengths and weaknesses, evaluate the selected test for the element, and make recommendations, if any for improvement, citing appropriate standards of practice.)
    • Element 1. Purpose: Define the purpose for testing, the content, and skills tested. (See Unit 2 assignment.)
    • Element 2. Appropriateness: Evaluate appropriateness of test content, skills tested, and content covered. (See Unit 2 assignment.)
    • Element 3. Materials: Evaluate materials for which clear, accurate, and complete information is provided. (See Unit 2 assignment.)
    • Element 4. Training: Test users have appropriate knowledge, skills, and training. (See Unit 2 assignment.)
    • Element 5. Technical Quality:
      • Synthesis of evidence of reliability. (See Unit 5 assignment.)
      • Synthesis of evidence of validity. (See Unit 5 assignment.)
    • Element 6. Test Items and Format: Evaluate test items, test format, directions, manuals and scores, and address the use of computer technology. (See Unit 7 assignment.)
    • Element 7. Test Procedures and Materials: Evaluate test procedures and materials to ensure that potentially offensive content or language is avoided. (See Unit 7 assignment.)
    • Element 8. Modifications and Accommodations: Evaluate if tests provide appropriately modified forms or procedures for test takers with disabilities. (See Unit 7 assignment.)
    • Element 9. Group Differences: Evaluate evidence on performance of test takers of diverse subgroups.
  4. Summary. (Two pages.)
  5. Overall recommendation to use the selected test in the field and with populations to be served.
    • If recommending the use of the selected test, identify the greatest strengths you discovered and determined in its use. Additionally, identify any limitations or concerns that may still exist with its use regardless of the recommendation. Are there still concerns for the test in certain situations?
    • If not recommending the use of the selected test, identify the greatest weaknesses you discovered and determined in its use. Additionally, identify any strengths that may still exist with its use regardless of the opposition. Are there still uses for the test within set parameters?
  6. References (required, use current APA format and style).

Additional Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • References: A minimum of nine references. These may include journal articles, literature reviews, MMY reviews, and publisher websites. At least five of the nine references must be from professional journals. It is likely and appropriate that many of these references and citations were included in one or more of your previous assignments. Alternatively, you may want to supplement your paper with current, peer-viewed journal articles you located after completing an earlier assignment. Those inclusions would also be acceptable.
  • Length of paper: At least six pages (not including title page, abstract, or references).

Note: The articles you need to complete this assignment should be available inside the library collection. In future courses, you may use the Capella library’s Interlibrary Loan service to obtain articles outside of the collection, but you should not have to use the service for this course. In the event that you cannot find articles covering a newer test edition, please refer to the List of Tests by Type document in the resources. Note which tests have been designated as acceptable for searching prior test editions.

Explain at least one conclusion you drew or insight you gained as a result of your comparison.

The many different forensic treatment settings – prisons, jails, outpatient settings, community centers, and specialized treatment centers – provide many employment opportunities. Even within these settings, there are specific and differing programs that operate. For instance, a prison might operate a drug treatment program styled as an outpatient program, a residential drug treatment facility, a sex offender program, and general outpatient services, all in the same facility. In the outpatient setting, a forensic psychologist practitioner might be called on to conduct anger management groups, domestic violence groups, substance abuse services, and follow-up services with sex offenders after release. The diversity of practice experiences within the forensic system is impressive and sometimes even overwhelming.
But not every setting is right for every therapist. Some forensic treatment professionals are comfortable entering any correctional facility, while others might be more comfortable working at one security level but not another (e.g., a low-security facility might be more preferable than a maximum-security facility). There are forensic treatment professionals who find forensic outpatient settings similar to traditional outpatient practice and, therefore, more familiar and comfortable. It is important to assess and understand your own comfort level with the various forensic treatment settings before entering them and starting along your career path. One way of doing this is to consider the various settings and compare them based on external dimensions of forensic treatment. For example, how do the available resources compare between a maximum-security prison and a juvenile detention center? Are the practice challenges similar across the various treatment settings, or do certain challenges inhibit effective practice in one setting more than others? These kinds of comparisons can help you understand the potential challenges in a desired forensic setting. Comparing forensic settings can also provide you with possible interest in settings not previously considered, and inform you as to how external factors can impact your professional goals.
To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the article “Systemic Issues and Correctional Outcomes: Expanding the Scope of Correctional Psychology” in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus on forensic treatment setting issues. Note the various external dimensions of forensic treatment for each setting.
  • Review Chapter 1 in the course text Correctional Counseling and Treatment. Consider which types of treatment occur most frequently in specific forensic treatment settings.
  • Review Chapter 18 in the course text Handbook of Forensic Mental Health with Victims and Offenders: Assessment, Treatment, and Research. Think about the treatment challenges in correctional forensic facilities.
  • Select two forensic treatment settings to compare in this assignment.
  • Select two of the following external dimensions of forensic treatment settings to use in your comparison: social support, available resources, access to treatment, and/or challenges to practice.
  • Think about the similarities and differences between the settings in terms of external dimensions of forensic treatment settings.

The assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Identify the two forensic settings and the two external dimensions of forensic treatment you selected.
  • Compare (similarities and differences) the settings in terms of the external dimensions of forensic treatment settings you selected.
  • Explain at least one conclusion you drew or insight you gained as a result of your comparison.
