What are some of the popular myths about addiction with which you are familiar? Use examples.

1. What are some of the challenges in diagnosing an individual with persistent depressive disorder or cyclothymic disorder versus their more severe counterparts? Explain with examples.

2. Read the case study of “Jack” located in the Topic 4 materials and provide the appropriate DSM-5 diagnoses in descending order, from the dominant, to the least dominant. For each diagnosis you assign, provide an explanation of the diagnostic criteria you assessed to be compelling, as found in the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria monograph for each disorder.

3. Review the vignettes located in the topic five materials and then diagnose Robin and Becky with a psychotic disorder. What are the justifications for your diagnosis? Include differential diagnoses that were considered and discarded.

4. Review the vignette of Brett located in the topic five materials, and then provide a DSM diagnosis. Based on your cultural background/worldview, what is your perspective on the nature of psychotic disorders?

Briefly review the biblical narrative in Mark 5: 1-20. How would you help a psychotic individual who presents to your treatment center and insists that the etiology of his disorder is spiritual in nature and not biochemical?

Review Mercer’s article and identify two or three recommendations/practices you find relevant in this source as pertaining to a clinician that considers treating Brett.

5. Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (e.g., hoarding disorder) have gained popularity in the media in recent years. How do portrayals of these disorders in popular culture differ from the descriptions of them in the DSM? How might the media popularity affect a person’s likelihood to seek treatment?

6. In what ways do people treat their own symptoms of anxiety disorders, and trauma and stress disorders? Review the case study of Rebecca, located under the Topic 6 topic materials. Provide and justify a diagnostic impression for Rebecca.

7. It can be difficult to distinguish between symptoms of personality disorders and other psychological disorders. What are some key differences between these disorders that can assist a counselor in making an accurate diagnosis?

8. Borderline personality disorder is often viewed as a diagnosis largely given to women, whereas antisocial personality disorder is considered a man’s diagnosis. Given your understanding of gender roles in society, why do you think this dichotomy exists?

9. In the DSM-5, Gambling Disorder was moved from the “Impulse Control Disorders” category to the “Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders” category. Do you think that this was a good decision? Why or why not?

10. What are some of the popular myths about addiction with which you are familiar? Use examples.

Discussion – Week 1

The Relationship Between Research and Practice

All too often, the very idea of research creates anxiety instead of interest. Fear of statistics and resistance to the language of research can become a barrier to learning to analyze professional counseling literature. So, this course will begin with an exploration of your perceptions and biases about research.

Addressing these preconceived notions about research helps pave the way to understanding the role of research in counseling practice. Consider this: If you consulted your primary care physician for treatment of a disease, you would not want to learn that you were prescribed medication that was proven to be ineffective or to cause harm. The same is true for counseling practice. Counseling research helps keep clinicians up to date on what works and what does not.

For this Discussion, you will explore the relationship between research and practice and how you might anticipate using research in your future counseling work.

To Prepare

  • Review the Learning Resources      related to research and evidence-based practice and consider how these      resources inform your Discussion.
  • Review the Learning Resources      related to how to search the Walden library for articles related to      evidence-based practice.
  • Search the Walden Library for one      current (within last 10 years) peer-reviewed article in the professional      counseling literature related to the use of empirical evidence in      counseling practice.
  • Reflect on how other disciplines      use research in their work.

Post by Day 3

Based on your search experience through the Walden Library:

  • Explain your perceptions,      concerns, fears, or assumptions about research.
  • Post any questions or concerns you      have about successfully completing this course.
  • Explain how you anticipate using      research in your future clinical work citing the article that you choose      from the counseling databases.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Discuss both the social and emotional impacts of such a relationship as well as their effects on the treatment relationship. Use specific examples.

Ms. Cheney was a case manager at an outpatient clinic that provided a variety of services. One of her clients was Ms. Rosalind, who was receiving services because of a recent divorce. Ms. Cheney had also experienced a divorce in her past and thought she had effectively dealt with that experience, but found herself identifying with many comments made by Ms. Rosalind.

Through their work together, the two women realized they shared many common interests. They often found themselves talking about these shared interests in their time together and eventually began meeting for coffee after their sessions. Ms. Rosalind soon suggested they begin spending additional time together socially and Ms. Cheney agreed. Before long, they became fast friends, spending a significant amount of social time together on evenings and weekends, visiting clubs, going to movies or visiting local restaurants.

After several months, the two had a falling out about a gentleman both women favored. Ms. Rosalind filed a complaint with the Regulatory agency in her state about the relationship.

Using the same societal issue impacting a family in Part 1, please distinguish resiliency between individual family members and the family unit

You have learned risk factors for children in foster care, and risk factors for individual family members, and the family unit of military service members. In addition to risks, you have been asked to analyze resiliency of the various individuals, families, and groups within society. As a human service professional it is imperative to understand risks and resiliency. This is necessary to better offer programming to increase success for members of society presently at risk for negative outcomes.

For this Assignment please answer the following:

Part 1

Examine a societal issue impacting a family and discuss risks factors for this group as a whole and as individuals.

Part 2

Using the same societal issue impacting a family in Part 1, please distinguish resiliency between individual family members and the family unit.

Part 3

Analyze resilience theory by explaining salient points of this theoretical construct.

Part 4

In Part 1, risks for individual family members and the family unit were applied. In part 2, resiliency was applied to individual family members and the family unit. In part 3, resiliency theory is analyzed. For this final part it is now necessary to differentiate interventions that can be utilized with individual family members, and the entire family with the purpose of increasing resiliency.

This paper should be 4–6 pages (not including the cover page and reference page) in APA style format. Your paper should include a minimum of three academic peer-reviewed journal articles. Provide appropriate citations and references for any information you use in this paper.
