Describe the lenses and explain how/why they represent a promising combination. Why are they worthwhile to discuss in relationship to one another?

Essay 2 builds on the analytical skills you displayed in Essay 1, asking you to deepen those skills by applying two lenses to the readings. You will also be adding in your most recent reading, Heart of Darkness—a key piece of 20th-century literature. Exploring the intersection of two different themes is an opportunity to narrow your scope even further, giving you a stronger foundation for analysis. You need to take the same scholarly approach as you did in Essay 1: use APA citation style, and include a narrow, arguable thesis statement, separate supporting ideas with topic sentences/transitions, and a dynamic conclusion.

For Essay 2, write a 1000- to 1500-word essay in which you

  1. Select two of the themes of Postcolonial theory that you would like to explore. These will be the lenses through which you look at the literature. You are more than welcome to stick to the same initial theme you chose for Essay 1 and add in a new one, or you could choose two entirely new themes to apply.
  2. Describe the lenses and explain how/why they represent a promising combination. Why are they worthwhile to discuss in relationship to one another? How do they inform one another? How does the combination limit your approach in helpful, constructive, or opportune ways? Be specific.

This should be the bulk of your writing. How do the themes function within the story? What specific moments in each story are valuable for drawing deeper insights about the intersection between the two themes? Your analysis should include specific textual evidence, not simply general statements about the plot elements or characters. Ultimately, the analysis should answer this question: what do these three stories reveal about how these themes combine? What insight(s) can we take from the readings that apply beyond the literature? Apply that lens to The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Tempest, and Heart of Darkness.

Develop three measurable learning objectives that align to your selected standard.

We will begin the process of developing assessments for an instructional plan using the backward design model. In this model, we begin with the end in mind; therefore, when developing an instructional plan, we begin with the standards that we use to develop measurable learning objectives to ensure alignment. Once that is finalized, educators then create assessments before writing the instructional plans as this will ensure alignment between how we measure learner knowledge with instruction. Assignments in Weeks 1 through 5 will all be used in your Final Paper, so be sure to review your instructor feedback to make any necessary revisions in Week 6.

Prepare

Prior to beginning work on this assignment,

· Review the Weekly Lesson for Week 1 that provides more explicit details on how to create measurable learning objectives.

· Read Chapter 4: Learning Objectives, Assessment and Instruction. Be sure to complete the activity at the end of 4.1 that will help you identify measurable learning objectives.

· Explore the following article about the backward design model (Links to an external site.) Understanding by Design (Links to an external site.).

· Watch the following video about the backward design model (Links to an external site.) Grant Wiggins – Understanding by design (1 of 2 (Links to an external site.)).

· Review the Read the Standards (Links to an external site.) web page.

· Review the  Bloom’s Video (Links to an external site.) and Bloom’s Wheel (Links to an external site.) to help you with writing measurable learning objectives.

Reflect

Consider the following:

· Teaching does not only happen in classrooms. There are many avenues in which you might need to know how to teach and assess learners. Consider what area of teaching you envision yourself. Do you see yourself as a classroom teacher, a corporate or health trainer, a military trainer, for example?

· Consider what type of learners you would be teaching and the content area of interest.

Content Instructions (Due Monday, Day 7)

Complete the following:

· Fill out the Week 1 Developing Learning Objectives Assignment Template (see Weekly Lesson for Week 1 for an exemplar). The Week 1 template is what you will submit to Waypoint.

· Highlight your chosen path that you foresee yourself teaching in (ex. PreK, K through 12, Military Trainer, Corporate Trainer, Health Trainer, etc.)

· Copy and paste a selected standard from the following options:

o Pre-K standards of your state.

o Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that are for math and reading (see Read the Standards (Links to an external site.)).

o K-12 standards of your state if you do not follow the CCSS or if you choose a different content area than math and reading.

o Standards that are outside the discipline of the public schools (e.g., military, corporate, healthcare, etc.)

· Develop three measurable learning objectives that align to your selected standard.

o Check out Week 1 Weekly Lesson, which will provide additional support for developing your objectives.

o Use the Bloom’s Wheel (Links to an external site.) to help you create three learning objectives within three different cognitive (thinking) levels. Be sure to label each objective with the level of thinking from Bloom’s Taxonomy.

o Select from the verbs in the middle section of the wheel when writing your measurable learning objectives. Having measurable objectives makes writing your assessments so much easier!

creating an outline of your lecture notes and (2) a narrative description of your lecture presentation

Svinicki and McKeachie (2014) state, “Effective lectures combine the talents of scholar, writer, producer, comedian, entertainer, and teacher in ways that contribute to student learning” (p. 58). Imagine you are hired to present a lecture to a group of adult learners on any topic that is of personal or professional interest.

For this assignment you will be (1) creating an outline of your lecture notes and (2) a narrative description of your lecture presentation. First, choose a subject that is of interest to you and prepare your lecture notes. For this assignment, your lecture notes must be in a Word document in outline format. You may include cue words or phrases, or form your notes as a series of questions. The lecture outline must include the following information:

  1. Graphic representation
  2. Procedural directions
  3. Signposts
  4. Transitions

In addition to the outline, you must include a narrative that describes the educational setting, how you will check for student understanding, how you will use examples, maintain student attention, and how you will engage students in actively thinking about the content presented. As with the Week One assignment, your narrative can be in a format of your choice such as a Word document, video, slide presentation or another layout of your choosing. Although there is no page or length requirement for this assignment to allow creative freedom, make sure that you have fully addressed all the required topics listed above, using the textbook and at least one additional source to support your answers. Be sure to cite your sources appropriately both in-text and separate reference page in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Discuss what you think the theorist’s career advice would be surrounding your experience and the position you are seeking.

eginning work on this assignment, please read the following:

  • Chapter 1: History, Theory, and Applied Directions
  • Coffee Date With Piaget (Johnson, 2017)
  • Children and Their Basic Needs (Prince & Howard, 2002)
  • Montessori Method (Holfester, 2017)
    • Review job postings and find one that you would like to apply for someday. You can find these on Indeed (Links to an external site.), Monster (Links to an external site.), or LinkedIn (Links to an external site.).

We’ve all heard the question, “If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?” When asked that question, does a theorist immediately pop into your mind? We have more in common with theorists than you might think. For instance, have you ever championed for those less fortunate than you? Bronfenbrenner saw injustice in the way governmental policy overlooked poverty-stricken families, which prompted him to co-found Head Start. Have you ever taken a video of a child? Arnold Gesell was a pioneer in using motion pictures to document developmental milestones. For this assignment, you are to plan a coffee date with a theorist. The goal of this assignment is to let you know that theorists are not outdated, obsolete figures. In fact, theorists have a lot in common with you and your classmates. This assignment gives you a chance to talk with a theorist about your own ideas and future career goals.

Instructions

Complete the following:

  • Choose one of these theorists to use for this assignment: Bronfenbrenner, Gesell, Montessori, Maslow, Bowlby, Erikson, Skinner, Bandura, or Vygotsky.
