2. After watching the “How to Write an Essay” presentation, write an essay of at least 650 words to explain your philosophy of education (position statement) and how your philosophy would impact your response and give detail of the type of learning strategies that you would use for the following scenario:

You are a teacher to older students, and you want your students to do more than simply memorize their way through the information you are teaching. You want them to develop their critical-thinking skills, learn to solve problems, make informed decisions, and get involved with lessons. This turns out to be a daunting task, however. The students seem to want you to describe every required detail in assignments; and when you call on students who don’t have their hands raised, the most common response is, “I didn’t have my hand up” or “I don’t know.” In other cases, they say, “C’mon, just tell us what you want us to know,” and “Why do we have to learn this stuff?”

a. The paper should include a title page, main body, and reference page.

b. The main body should consist of an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.

i. The introduction paragraph should have an attention getting opener and a position statement that clearly names and defines the chosen educational philosophy.

ii. The body paragraphs should include 3 pieces of evidence or actual learning strategies to support the use of your philosophy in practical teaching methods in your class.

iii. The concluding paragraph should summarize the paper and restate the position statement by naming the chosen philosophy/philosophies.

c. Your essay must include 2 in-text citations, 1 of which must come from the textbook. If an outside source is used, it must have been published within the last 5 years. APA Basics in the Instructions for APA guidelines.

Allocate at least 5 hours in the field to support this field experience.

Part 1: Observation

Observe your mentor teacher in your chosen content area. During your observation of the lesson, take note of how literacy is integrated into the content area and what literacy strategies are implemented to engage students in diverse perspectives and various kinds of learning.

With permission from your mentor teacher, seek opportunities to observe another classroom.

Part 2: Interview

After your observation, interview your mentor teacher on the strategies used to integrate literacy into their content area.

Below is a list of questions to ask your mentor teacher:

  1. How do you integrate literacy into your content area?
  2. Do you collaborate with other departments when integrating literacy standards?
  3. What challenges do you face when integrating literacy into your content area?
  4. What literacy strategies do you implement in order to engage students in diverse perspectives and various kinds of learning?
  5. What digital tools, technology, and/or resources do you use in order to advance student literacy?
  6. Did the students master the learning objective for the day? If so, how do you know, if not what will your next steps be?
  7. How do you handle the situation when parents disapprove of a text selection?
