Identify one of the religions covered in this course that emphasizes behavior/deeds over adherence to creeds/beliefs/spiritual experiences in our current era.

  • Length: 1500-2000 words, in addition to a bibliography/works cited page
  • Formatting: Double –spaced, 12-pt font, Arial or Times New Roman Font
  • Bibliography: a minimum of 3 academic sources; preferably peer-reviewed publications and books. One of these must be a book reference. These academic sources are in addition to your textbook/weekly readings/lectures. Do not use Wikipedia as an Internet source.

Construct an argument to answer ONE of the following three questions:

  1. Identify one of the religions covered in this course that emphasizes behavior/deeds over adherence to creeds/beliefs/spiritual experiences in our current era. Then, compare it to another religion that you interpret as emphasizing the opposite, i.e., creeds/beliefs/spiritual experiences over behavior/deeds. Explain the reasons for such possible differences in emphases by exploring underlying sociological and historical themes. What were major world events or cultural developments that may have led each of these religions to emphasize each of these particular aspects over the other?
  2. Although Buddhism and Hinduism share similar beliefs, their approaches to the self, or the ‘soul’ are very different. Explain the metaphysical and practical distinctions between anatman and atman, and how these concepts tie into each religion’s unique approach to the sacred (god/gods) and the path to salvation. Make sure you specify which branches of Buddhism and Hinduism your analysis is tackling.
  3. What is the meaning of the word Jihad in Islam? Select two distinct sects of Islam and explain key differences/similarities in the interpretation and practices of this term. What role, if any, does Jihad serve in the sects you have selected, in today’s world? How has this role changed from previous historical time periods and/or how has it remained the same?

· Determine a clinical, formal diagnosis for this character using the criteria of the DSM-5

Clinically Diagnosing a Psychosocial Problem

The sign of an excellent clinician is the ability to identify one or two criteria that distinguishes the diagnoses from any other possibility. An ambiguous clinical diagnosis can lead to faulty course of treatment and hurt the client more than it can help. This week, using the DSM-5 (and ICD-10-CM), you assess a fictional character that is presenting certain psychosocial problems and determine if he/she meets the criteria for a clinical diagnosis. This is a culmination of learning from all the weeks covered so far.

For this Assignment:

· Choose a fictional character (e.g., from a book, movie, TV show) that presents with a psychosocial problem (e.g., depression, relationship problems, incarceration).

o Note: Some film suggestions for fictional characters are: White Oleander; Girl, Interrupted; Little Miss Sunshine; or Antwone Fisher.

· Determine a clinical, formal diagnosis for this character using the criteria of the DSM-5

· Then choose three words that best describe the diagnosis. These three words should distinguish this diagnosis from any other diagnosis.

· Create a 2-3 page transcript presenting the following:

o A brief description of the fictional character and story

o A description of the presenting problem of the fictional character

o Your full clinical diagnosis using the DSM-5; consider the criteria supporting your diagnosis, the severity and specifiers (if appropriate) and Z Codes.

o Include the rationale behind choosing the three words to best describe the diagnosis. The three words you have chosen for your diagnosis should also fit this individual’s mental disorder.

Group Wiki Part 4: Identification of a Policy Alternative

As an astute social worker and professional policy advocate, once you have selected and identified a social problem, you begin the process of creating and implementing a policy that addresses that social problem. One of the first things you do in the implementation process is an analysis of the social policy you identified. There is always the possibility that the policy created and implemented to address the social problem you identified is not viable for a variety of reasons. In this case, you must explore a policy alternative.

In Part 4 of your ongoing Wiki assignment, your group identifies a policy alternative (Drug Free Communities) to the social problem you identified (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA).

Complete Part 4 of your Wiki.

Address the following items within your group’s Wiki page for Part 4:

· Does the policy alternative meet the policy goals (e.g., social equality, redistribution of resources, social work values, and ethics)?

· What are the forces that are for/against the policy?

· What policy advocacy skills can be used to support the policy alternative?

1) analyze brain areas associated with a disorder and corresponding behavioral deficits,

The final project is the creation of a case application paper that includes an in-depth analysis of a selected case study. Students will choose an individual such as a known historical figure, a celebrity, a fictional character, or an individual known personally to the student (ALL identifying information must be eliminated from the paper in the case of the last option). The selected individual must be a child or adolescent with a cognitive disorder or a learning disability, and enough information must be available to include the following in the analysis:

·A description of the chosen disorder and a comparison between normal brain function and the brain function of a person with the disorder

·An evaluation of the relationship between psychological and physiological aspects of the disorder and the resulting negative effects on daily functioning

·An assessment of the impact of recent technological advancements on the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder

·Recommendations for appropriate treatment options and coping mechanisms for the selected case and other people with the disorder

·Preventative measures that may be employed for others who may be at risk for the disorder

The case application paper should be a 10–12-page Word document. The final product represents an authentic demonstration of competencies highlighted by the course outcomes because the paper requires students to

1) analyze brain areas associated with a disorder and corresponding behavioral deficits,

2) review existing research and apply the literature to a topic in cognitive neuropsychology, and

3) assess diagnostic techniques, summarize effective treatments, and analyze possible outcomes of those treatments.
