Identify three of the most environmentally negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution and justify your choices

Assignment 3: Environmental Issues and the Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution, which began in the eighteenth century, has had an ongoing influence on society as well as the relationship between humans and their environment. With the onset of industrialization came the drastic increase in urbanization, setting up of factories in places which were once biomes, and the rapid development of land. All this occurred without assessing the long-term impact to the environment. Recognizing the importance of the Industrial Revolution era and the ongoing impact it has had on the environment is essential to learning how to help the environment and correct the damage of that era.

Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, complete the following:

  • Identify three of the most environmentally negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution and justify your choices. For example, the invention of the automobile revolutionized travel in a positive manner. However, this invention is causing some of the biggest environmental problems as a result of the extensive use of oil extracted from the earth.
  • Examine how these three negative impacts changed the environment; list the mechanisms through which this happened. For example, factories caused an increase in pollution through the release of toxic waste, which led to diminished and lost fish populations in rivers.
  • Explain the effect of the environmental movement on the process of industrialization in the United States during the 1970’s.
  • Identify the laws passed to help ameliorate the environmental issues in the U.S. or around the world related to these three impacts. Have any laws been passed since this movement in the 1970’s? If there have been laws implemented, summarize the spirit of the law and comment on the effectiveness of the law.
  • Based on your research, examine whether the state of the environment has become worse or has improved as a result of these laws. If you think conditions have not improved, suggest solutions or steps that must be done to improve the situation.

Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references. Be sure to include an additional page for references.

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

For each lifestyle change, identify which footprint you would be lowering by doing it.  Discuss potential obstacles to making those changes, and then suggest ways you might overcome those obstacles.

The ecological footprint is a tool for helping us to visualize the impacts we make on the environment.  For a brief overview of the concept, please watch this one-minute video The Ecological Footprint Explained prior to beginning work on this discussion, You will take on the challenge of lessening your impacts on the environment, through reducing the size of your ecological footprint.

PART A

Use the footprint tool from the web page What is Your Ecological Footprint? to calculate your ecological footprint.  At every opportunity, please select the “add details to imporve activity, make a note of how many earths would be required if everyone lived like you.  Then click on “see details” to obtain the following information:

Your ecological footprint, in global hectares (a hectare is about two and half acres).

Your top three consumption categories.

Finally research some ways you might reduce your footprint, identifying a few specific ones that you might put into practice throughout the course.

Part B Household Carbon Emissions Footprint

Next use the Carbon Footprint Calculator to calculate your household carbon emissions footprints.  After answering all the questions

Make a note of your carbon emissions footprint in pounds.  Is that above or below the average household carbon footprint in the US?

Also explore specific actions you might take to reduce your footprint.  Which of them might be practical to undertake in the next five weeks?

Part C  Water Footprint Calculator to calculate you daily water footprint.  After answering all the questions:

Make a note of your gallons per day water footprint

Record the top three contributors to it

Scroll down the page to access a series of Tips buttons you can click on for advice on reducing your footprint.  Again make not of some specific ideas you see that might be practical to implement.

Your discussion should include all the information you gathered about your consumption habits from your three footprint calculations by answering the following questions

What did you learn that surprised you about your consumption habits?

Propose a minimum of five lifestyle changes you could make that would reduce one or more of the three footprints.  These do not have to be the ones you use in this course-long project. over the course of the discussion you may opt to select other ones based upon classmates’ recommendations.  You will be recording your final choices for lifestyle changes in your journal at the end of the week.

For each lifestyle change, identify which footprint you would be lowering by doing it.  Discuss potential obstacles to making those changes, and then suggest ways you might overcome those obstacles.

200 words , I don;t need a title page and all that.. Just put it as a discussion

2. Describe how you have applied theory and/or knowledge from your course work into practice during your practicum experience (provide specific examples).

It is important for a public health professional to show evidence of professional development over time. The professional portfolio is one way to collect and showcase achievements and artifacts or evidence of accomplishments.

For this assignment, you will prepare a professional portfolio that includes the following:

Reflection of Your Practicum Experience

In a 1,000-1,250 words, address the following:

1. Summarize your practicum experience.

2. Describe how you have applied theory and/or knowledge from your course work into practice during your practicum experience (provide specific examples).

3. What are the most important things you have learned from this practicum experience and how will you apply them to your public health career?

Describe the physical structure of the selected ecosystem and explain how structural factors come together to create the ecosystem.

The final paper will combine the ecological concepts from the course under one analysis: ecosystem and community ecology. The overall objective is to understand how the biotic and abiotic factors influence the physical and biological structures of ecosystems and the communities within them. This knowledge is fundamental for developing effective policy, and managing wildlife and habitats.

To begin the assignment, select one of the following ecosystems. Then, address the questions below. Analyzing ecological communities can be accomplished by taking apart all of the physical and biological pieces that make up an ecological community, and then relating them back to one another in order to understand how they interact to form a functioning system. Conclude the paper with an assessment of human impacts on your selected ecosystem and how this will affect the ecology and future adaptation capabilities of the species in your community. Reference your textbook and a minimum of six scholarly sources (i.e., academic journal research articles) to provide examples and evidence that support your main points.

Before beginning the assignment, be sure to read chapters 16 through 18 on community ecology carefully and to learn more about specific ecosystems, review chapters 23 through 25 in the course text, Smith, T.M. & Smith, R.L. (2015). Elements of Ecology. 9th  edition. MA: Pearson.

Step 1: Choose one ecosystem to analyze.

Lakes and ponds

Step 2: Address the following points in your paper.

  • Describe the physical structure of the selected ecosystem and explain how structural factors come together to create the ecosystem. The physical structure refers to the abiotic (non-living) components—such as temperature, precipitation, bedrock, soil type, riverbed or ocean floor, boulders, and topography—that make up your ecosystem.
  • Describe the biological structure of your selected ecosystem. Explain how life forms come together to shape your ecosystem. The biological structure is how the ecosystem is shaped by plants and animals, and it includes forest levels and coral reef structures. It also includes the overall level of diversity, species composition, and dominant plant and animal species with details about niche, height, size, density, and/or function.
  • Analyze the function of the selected ecosystem by indicating how the physical and biological structures are related to the ecosystem’s productivity (i.e., the amount of biomass produced), complexity of food webs, nutrient availability, and nutrient cycling.
  • Explain the process of succession in your selected ecosystem.
  • Describe one mutualistic interaction in your selected ecosystem. Explain the role that each species has in the interaction and the resulting mutual benefits to each species population. In other words, what does each species give and what does each one get in return.
  • Describe one predator-prey (or plant-herbivore) interaction. Explain how this interaction impacts the ecological community as a whole. Evaluate the magnitude of human impact on your ecosystem. This includes how humans are affecting the physical structure and species in your ecosystem. Predict whether the species and their interactions presented in your paper will be able to adapt to these changes. For example, what would happen to pollinators in a plant-pollinator mutualism, if plants are destroyed due to urbanization?

Must be 8 to 12 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style

  • Include an introduction stating your selected aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem followed by an overview of topics that will be discussed.
  • Include a summary of the main points discussed in the paper, with particular attention to ecosystem function and the future of your selected ecosystem.
  • Must use at least six scholarly sources (i.e., academic journal articles) in addition to the course text.
