How do the views presented in the articles differ? How does illegal immigration both hurt and help state economies?

This week’s environmental controversy focuses on the question: should Immigration into the US be reduced? Review the background information. Then, using the References along with resources from your own research, write a 3 page response to the questions that follow. Remember to cite your sources using proper APA format. Must have at least 1-2 references and one incite quote.

How do the views presented in the articles differ? How does illegal immigration both hurt and help state economies? Do you feel that the author’s of these two articles are ignoring each others side, or is it possible that the Illinois economy is simply better equipped to absorb illegal immigration? Before answering this final question make sure to consider the affiliations of the authors.

Background Information

Legal and illegal immigration into the United States is discussed in your textbook. Advocates of liberal immigration argue that both legal and illegal immigrants are needed to perform difficult and low paying jobs that most citizens won’t take. Advocates also sympathize with immigrants because many of them are fleeing poverty and tyranny in their homelands. Immigrants pay taxes, help to support the US social security system, and contribute to American society.  Opponents of immigration include individuals that want to ban or significantly reduce all immigration, and those that simply want more stringent efforts to end illegal immigration. Opponents argue that current immigration policies and border patrol methods are too lenient and allow terrorists to infiltrate into the US.

Identify three of the most environmentally negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution and justify your choices.

Environmental Issues and the Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution, which began in the eighteenth century, has had an ongoing influence on society as well as the relationship between humans and their environment. With the onset of industrialization came the drastic increase in urbanization, setting up of factories in places which were once biomes, and the rapid development of land. All this occurred without assessing the long-term impact to the environment. Recognizing the importance of the Industrial Revolution era and the ongoing impact it has had on the environment is essential to learning how to help the environment and correct the damage of that era.

Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, complete the following:

  • Identify three of the most environmentally negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution and justify your choices. For example, the invention of the automobile revolutionized travel in a positive manner. However, this invention is causing some of the biggest environmental problems as a result of the extensive use of oil extracted from the earth.
  • Examine how these three negative impacts changed the environment; list the mechanisms through which this happened. For example, factories caused an increase in pollution through the release of toxic waste, which led to diminished and lost fish populations in rivers.
  • Explain the effect of the environmental movement on the process of industrialization in the United States during the 1970s.
  • Identify the laws passed to help ameliorate the environmental issues in the U.S. or around the world related to these three impacts. Have any laws been passed since this movement in the 1970s? If there have been laws implemented, summarize the spirit of the law and comment on the effectiveness of the law.
  • Based on your research, examine whether the state of the environment has become worse or has improved as a result of these laws. Suggest steps to improve the environmental situation.

Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references. Be sure to include an additional page for references.

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

What new things do  yoyou hope to learn in this course?

Throughout this course you will be asked to keep a journal about your experiences in the class.  The purpose of this activity is to enable you to reflect on your learning:  what new things you have discovered, what surprises you have encountered, what topics or ideas you will have fund particularly challenging, and how the curse is going for your.  During the five weeks in which you are participating in the Environmental Footprint Reduction Project, in Week 2 through Week 4 you will use this journal as a space for a progress report on your efforts.  Your entries will be evaluated in terms of how well they met the topic and length requirements, and your writing clarity.  Your entries should be a minimum of one typed page and double spaced, Times New Roman, and 12 point font.

In the first paragraph or two of your first entry, please reflect on your previous experiences, if any with environmental science and environmental issues.  What new things do  yoyou hope to learn in this course?  What concerns or fears do you have about this class?  What strategies to you plan to put in place to address them?

In another one or two paragraphs, share your thoughts about the first week of class.  What did you learn?  What experiences stand out for you?  What tasks or contend did you find difficult or frustrating?  What activities did you find surprising or exciting?  Look ahead, what are your intrigued or concerned by in the second week of the course.

Finally make a list of at least five lifestyle changes you plan to commit to making for your course-long Ecological Footprint Reduction Project.  Once you have recorded them in your journal you should begin taking those steps and keeping a weekly journal to record of your efforts.   You will report on the results in a class discussion in Week 5.

How does the greenhouse effect play a role in determining the climate on Earth?

While not a scientifically controversial issue, climate change, caused primarily by human activities, is a politically controversial issue. In this course, you are learning the science behind climate change. With this knowledge, you can help others understand its causes, symptoms, and impacts. With this knowledge, current and future generations can come up with solutions to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate.

Please discuss the following questions.  Discuss fully with examples and detail – a one or two sentence response does not meet the expectations of the assignment (or any assignment). Remember to use good grammar and spelling and that plagiarism will get you a zero. Show the links to all your reputable sources.

(1) How does the greenhouse effect play a role in determining the climate on Earth?

(2) What human activities are impacting the carbon cycle?

(3) How does having an overloaded carbon cycle impact the greenhouse effect?

(4) Before taking this class, did you understand or “believe” that human-induced climate change is occurring? Explain why or why not. Have you ever had a conversation with another about climate change?

(5) How would you engage in a discussion with a climate change skeptic? If you remain one, explain your position to a climate scientist. Would you explain the science behind climate change? What evidence would you present?

(6) Explain at least three impacts of climate change and why each should be a concern for any individual and for future generations.

(7) Discuss at least two things that humans can do to mitigate or adapt to a changing climate.

(8) Why should businesses, politicians, or government officials have a vested interest in working to lower carbon emissions to lessen the severity of the impacts of a changing climate?
