What are the names of the species used in this experiment?

VIRTUAL LAB…….ASSESSING WATER QUALITY JOURNAL QUESTIONS

Directions:  Participate in the virtual lab at http://www.mhhe.com/biosci/genbio/virtual_labs/BL_09/BL_09.html

Follow the directions and do the experiments.  Construct a table and graph.  Answer the following journal questions on a separate sheet of paper and put the entire lab in a small notebook for grading.

JOURNAL QUESTIONS:

1.What are the names of the species used in this experiment? Which of these species was the most tolerant of increased acidity in the aquarium? Which species was the least tolerant?

2.Describe how acid precipitation affects ecosystems.

3.What is an indicator species? How are indicator species used to assess pollution levels in the environment?

4.Suppose you are an ecologist studying the effects of acid precipitation on plant life. Describe an experiment you would perform in order to determine which plant species would be a useful indicator species for acid rain pollution.

5.How do the data represented on the Population Bar Graph compare to the data represented in the line graph titled Populations of Aquatic Invertebrates at Various pH Levels?

Discussion of your opinion on the response to the incident For this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation consisting of at least 7 slides (not including your title slide and reference slide) containing the information described above

For this assignment, you have been tasked with presenting information to your company’s board regarding a hazardous materials incident involving the transport of toxic substances that falls under the hazard classifications that we have studied so far (water/air reactive, corrosive, or toxic) identified on the following Web page(s): http://www.csb.gov/investigations

Use one of the transportation related incidents on the csb.gov website.

Use any of the facility incidents investigated by csb, but answer the DOT related questions as if you were shipping the hazardous materials involved in the incident.

Review and select an incident from the National Transportation Safety Board (ntsb.gov) website. Go to the ntsb.gov website and click “Investigation” link at the top of the page, then click “Accident Reports”. Go to the bottom of page to the box labeled as “Report by Mode” and click on the Hazardous Materials Accident Reports” link. Just make sure to cover all of the questions in your MS PowerPoint presentation.

Your presentation must include the following information: summary of the incident; identification of the information (hazard class, description, labels, markings, and placards) that the DOT requires when transporting toxic substances and information about workplace exposure concentrations of the substance involved in the incident; description of the elements of the emergency response to the incident including a discussion on its environmental and human health impacts (be sure to address how the toxic substance’s chemical properties, uses, and ill effects Interactions of Hazardous Materials 2 affect the tasks and safety of an EHS and FS professional working the incident); Discussion of your opinion on the response to the incident For this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation consisting of at least 7 slides (not including your title slide and reference slide) containing the information described above. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced. You must include at least four sources. Paraphrased and/or quoted materials must have accompanying citations in APA format.

As with some of our recent assignments, I am finding that common deductions for this assignment have been related to students not answering all of the questions and/or not complying with APA formatting requirements. Please avoid these pitfalls and related unnecessary point deductions.

Describe the demographic transition model and how it was developed by demographers.

Report Issue

You will write a research paper about the demographic transition model and global food production and distribution for a growing human population to meet global food security goals. You must use APA format for the paper and documentation.

Include the following:

  • Describe the demographic transition model and how it was developed by demographers.
  • Describe the 4 phases of demographic transition.
    • For each phase, compare crude birth rates (CBR) to crude death rates (CDR), and state whether the population is stable, growing, or declining in each. ·
  • According to demographers, what factors lead to a decline of the CDR in phase two and the CBR in phase three of the demographic transition? ·
  • Briefly describe 3 living conditions in developed countries that have reached phase four, and contrast them with these same conditions in developing countries that remain in earlier phases.
    • Note: When comparing and contrasting, include details for each of the entities being compared and contrasted. For example, if comparing availability of clean water in a developed country, contrast availability of clean water in a developing country.
  • Research and describe a program for developing countries that would help improve 1 of the 3 conditions that you compared.
  • Food security means that everyone has an adequate amount of nutritious food to lead healthy lives. Research and describe 1 specific program that helps developing countries reach food security goals.

5 academic resources, cited throughout paper. 3 pages. NO plagerism please. APA format

Calculate the total benefit expected for this proposed engineering control  (Must show your calculations).

Course Textbook APA Citation:

Asfahl, C. R., Hammer, W., & Price, D. (2004/2001). Occupational & industrial safety health management and engineering(2nd Custom ed.). New York, NY: Prentice-Hall.

Chapter 8 comes from an OSHA publication on job hazard analysis.

MOS 5201 uses a custom textbook including only information used in this course, resulting in a more cost-effective textbook than typically available otherwise.

A proposed engineering control is expected to cut the accident rate by 60 percent for a given process. Auditors have estimated cost data for accidents with this process as follows (average cost per accident):

Direct Cost           Hidden Cost               Freq/Yr

First aid cases                        200                     4000                       9
Med. treatment cases           6000                     9000                       3.5
Lost time cases                     8000                   40000                       1.5
No-injury cases                     none                     4000                      11.0

a. Calculate the total benefit expected for this proposed engineering control  (Must show your calculations).

b. If the proposed engineering control will cost $150,000, does the cost-benefit analysis support funding it? Why or why not?

c. What other factors might support funding the project?

Your response should be of a sufficient  length to answer the questions listed. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.
