Describe some of the possible effects of DAP and non-DAP practices on kindergarten-age children’s sense of self-efficacy in learning to read. Support your summary with at least two references, including your text.

Developmentally Appropriate Practices
Write a two- to three-page paper in which you address one of the following scenarios:

    • You are an elementary school principal who is committed to ensuring that students are taught in a developmentally appropriate environment. Not all of your kindergarten teachers understand how to use developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) to create such an environment. You are also tasked with introducing and enforcing the use of a new state-mandated, textbook-based reading curriculum to your kindergarten teachers. The curriculum is based on the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. As a principal, your job is to show teachers how they can successfully integrate the textbook and standards-based curriculum into their kindergarten classroom while maintaining a developmentally appropriate program. You decide to write a short article introducing the new curriculum that you will ask all the teachers to read prior to your first meeting.
    • You are a parent who is committed to ensuring that your youngest child experiences a developmentally appropriate learning environment in kindergarten. Your oldest two children learned to read in a kindergarten classroom that used developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) and they are now excellent and enthusiastic readers. You have just learned that there is going to be a new state-mandated, textbook-based reading curriculum used in kindergarten next year. The curriculum is based on the Common Core State Standards for English Language. You are concerned that the kindergarten teachers do not understand how to use developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) to teach reading. You decide to write a letter to the school principal using research and sharing some suggestions for how the kindergarten teachers can successfully integrate the textbook- and standards-based curriculum into their kindergarten classroom while maintaining a developmentally appropriate program.

In your paper or letter you must include the following elements:

    • Explain the purpose of the article/letter.
    • Summarize, in your own words, developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) for teaching reading to kindergarten-age children (as defined by the NAEYC) with at least three specific examples of DAP in teaching reading for this age.
    • Discuss the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts for teaching reading in kindergarten in your state from your perspective as an educator/parent committed to both DAP and high quality instruction. If your state uses the Common Core Standards, use these; if not use, whatever standards your state is currently using.
    • Describe some of the possible effects of DAP and non-DAP practices on kindergarten-age children’s sense of self-efficacy in learning to read. Support your summary with at least two references, including your text.
    • Explain at least three ideas for integrating the state-mandated textbook and standards-based curriculum with DAP. Use and cite at least one reference to support your ideas.
    • Summarize your points asking for the inclusion of DAP into the new kindergarten reading program. Remember, your goal whether you take on the role of the principal or the parent is to support the school in continuing to use DAP while adopting and implementing the new curriculum.

The paper should be two to three pages in length, not including title and reference pages. Use at least one reference in addition to your text for a total of two references. You must cite each reference in your paper at least once.
Your paper should be written using the following writing guidelines:

o    Use of graduate level writing with no grammar or spelling mistakes.

o    Use of writing conventions such as good topic sentences, sub-headings, and transitions for ease of understanding.

o    Formatted according to 6th edition APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the point or perspective you will argue or prove in the Final Research Paper. Refer to the Ashford Online Writing Center for information on how to develop a solid thesis statement.

Review the Final Research Paper instructions located within the Final Research Paper link in your online course or under the “Components of Course Evaluation” section of this guide. The Final Research Paper is due in Week Five. To help with the preparation of the paper, complete the following and submit it to your instructor for feedback.

  1. Topic: Refer to the Final Research Paper guidelines for your topic selection. Confirm your topic, and identify how this selection relates to your academic and professional pursuits. Review the feedback from your topic choice presented in the Week One discussion. How did your argument stand up to the examination of your peers?
  2. Thesis: Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the point or perspective you will argue or prove in the Final Research Paper. Refer to the Ashford Online Writing Center for information on how to develop a solid thesis statement.
  3. Annotated Bibliography: To help prepare for your final paper, you will be writing an annotated bibliography to indicate the quality of the sources you have read.  Please make sure to cite each source using APA style.  After each citation, write a brief paragraph (around 150 words) summarizing the source and examining how it will support you in defending your argument.  For more information and example of an annotated bibliography, please refer to section 7.7 in the Ashford Writing Center within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar in your online course..  Keep in mind the Academic Research standards for all Ashford University Papers.

Academic Research Standards

Academic research and papers must meet certain standards of quality recognized by the academic community. What constitutes quality, academic research?

  1. Primary sources, which are documents from the time period being discussed
  2. Secondary sources supported by research in primary sources
  3. Credible sources (experts in the area of study)
  4. Relevant research (materials are pertinent to the area of study)
  5. In graduate work, the use of peer-reviewed journal articles (journal articles reviewed by recognized experts in the relevant field of study) is required.
  6. Educational and Government websites may be appropriate in some cases, but should be evaluated carefully.

The paper must be five to seven pages in length (excluding the title pages) and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly sources, three of which can be found in the Ashford Online Library, to support your points. Of the five sources, two will be your primary sources, and one will meet the multimedia requirement. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar in your online course.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Write a second paragraph that describes the subject matter of the art work. What do you the artist might have been trying to say with this art work?

Without conducting ANY additional research this week, we are going to explore what you initially see and think when you look at a work of art. This activity is meant to help you understand:

  • Utilize the formal vocabulary in describing works of art
  • Analyze how the subject and context of work can help with interpretation

Select four (4) works of the first half of 20th century American art from the list below.

For each work of art:

  1. 1. List the artist, date and title.
  2. Write a paragraph that discusses the visual elements in the art work (For example, are the shapes geometric, or organic. What colors are used, etc.?). Using the resources above, describe how the elements work together. Note: You do not have to use every element in your description, but rather the two or three that seem to be the most prominent in the work.
  3. Write a second paragraph that describes the subject matter of the art work. What do you the artist might have been trying to say with this art work? Remember to consider the time frame in which the artwork was made. *Remember that you should not conduct research on this art work – the grade is based on your ability to support how the subject matter or time frame helped you interpret the meaning.

Your essay should be no less than 200 words for each of the four works you are examining (for a combined total of no less than 800 words).
