Describe the role of seniors in the chosen minority groups. Explain the changes in the role of seniors over the years.

The four largest minority groups in the United States are African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.

Using the Internet, research about the above mentioned minority groups in the United States. Based on your research and understanding, respond to the following:

  • Select at least two of the minorities listed above and describe how being a member of that minority group might affect aging. Be sure to include the role of family and social support.
  • Highlight some health and chronic conditions that are prevalent in the chosen minority groups.
  • Describe the role of seniors in the chosen minority groups. Explain the changes in the role of seniors over the years.
  • Explain any future challenges for the selected minority groups in the years ahead.

Aging In Other Times At Other Places

The proportion of older people in developed as well as developing nations of the world has been increasing. An aging population creates new economic and social challenges for nations.

Using the Internet, research about the economic or social challenges of nations with an aging population. Based on your research and understanding, compare and contrast seniors in the U.S. with seniors in another country of your choice. Your comparison should include, but should not be limited to, the following:

  • Changes in demographics
  • Family roles and social supports
  • Advances in technology
  • Living arrangement
  • Retirement
  • Health issues

What conclusions can you draw from your research that would demonstrate the role played by behavioral health in the healthcare industry?

Current Issues in the Behavioral Healthcare System

In the course project assignments of the past four weeks, you have written on various topics dealing with trends and issues in the behavioral healthcare system. Those weekly project assignments can be used as references for writing your final research paper.

In addition, read and incorporate the following articles from the EBSCO host database into your paper:

  • Deakin, A. (2004, November). Finding your organization’s hidden        treasure. Behavioral Health Management, 24(6), 27-29.
  • Droppa, D., & Luczak, R. (2004, January). Collaboration, technology,
and outcomes—A recipe to improve service delivery.
    Behavioral Health Management, 24(1), 41-44.

To complete the research paper, you will need to include an introduction and conclusion section as well as a title page and reference section. The title of the research paper will be the Current Issues in the Behavioral Healthcare System.

Your final paper is due for submission. The paper should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • The length of the paper should be eight to ten double-spaced pages (not including the title and reference pages).
  • The main sections should have a:
    • Title page
    • Introduction
    • Body of the paper (with subheadings)
    • Conclusion
    • Reference page(s)
  • The paper must use the APA format for citing sources and references.

Your final paper introduction (one page) should include the following points:

  • An overview of the research paper
  • The purpose or objective of the research paper

The body of the paper (five to six pages) should address each of the following topics using information learned in the course, in combination with outside references:

  • Based on your previous assignments and review of the literature, what are some of the major issues faced by today’s behavioral healthcare system? How have the current and future trends that are evolving in the industry addressed some of those issues?
  • Do you think there is a difference between the changing trends taking place in the private sector and that of public behavioral healthcare inpatient facilities? Based on your understanding about behavioral health services and the populations being served by them, do you agree that both private and public organizations are able to provide the necessary clinical services? Provide a rationale in support of your response.
  • In behavioral healthcare, outcomes are the established norm for measuring the success or lack of services. What are some of the major challenges in collecting the data needed to support and report behavioral health outcomes? Provide a rationale for your response.
  • Quality of care and services is an important part of an outcome-based strategy. The objective behind maintaining and improving quality is to provide competent and efficient services to consumers. In your opinion, do the current regulatory and accreditation standards for the behavioral health industry help to meet that objective? How?

Your conclusion (one to two pages) should include the following points:

  • What conclusions can you draw from your research that would demonstrate the role played by behavioral health in the healthcare industry?
  • What changes would you like to bring to today’s behavioral healthcare system in order to resolve the current issues identified?
  • Based on your literature review, if you were asked to conduct a formal research project on any of the topics discussed in the research paper, what would your choice be and why?

What types of unique challenges do behavioral health organizations face when recruiting behavioral health professionals?

Staffing and Administrative Issues in Behavioral Health

Similar to the healthcare industry, in general, behavioral health is facing challenges in the recruitment and retention of behavioral health professionals. This is true for both the clinical and administrative positions.

Read the following articles from the EBSCO host database:

  • Davis, J. (2005, November). Changes at the top: Are you ready?
    Behavioral Health Management, 25(2), 47.
  • Oss, M. (2004, March). Changing times require a new workforce
strategy. Behavioral Health Management, 24(2), 6.
  • Selden, D. (2003, March). What it takes to be a clinical supervisor.        Behavioral Health Management, 23(2), 36.

Using information learned in the course, in combination with outside references, prepare a document discussing the following topics:

  • What types of unique challenges do behavioral health organizations face when recruiting behavioral health professionals?
  • Do you think behavioral health organizations face similar challenges in the recruitment and retention of management? Provide a rationale for your response. Submit your paper as a two page Microsoft Word document

Determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis. You may solve the equation manually or use the Hypothesis Tester – Single Sample document provided in the Resources.

For this practical application assignment, you will assume the role of two different managers to recommend a course of action by applying hypothesis testing to business decisions. For the first scenario, you work for a regionally based magazine publisher, and for the second, you have just been hired away from your buyer’s position at Macy’s to work for the local mall.

You will need to use the Hypothesis Tester – Single Sample document, provided in Resources, to complete both of the scenarios.

Practical Application Scenario 1

In 2010, Playbill Magazine contacted Boos Allen to determine the mean annual household income of its readers. Using a list of customers provided by Playbill, Boos Allen randomly sampled 300 Playbill customers. From that sample, Boos Allen is confident that the population average Playbill reader’s household income is $119,155, and has a population sample household income standard deviation of $30,000.

Recently two Playbill executives suggested that Playbill‘s reader mean average household income has increased and that the magazine’s price should be raised. As Playbill‘s new marketing manager, you convince Playbill‘s chief operating officer to complete a second survey with Boos Allen to confirm that assertion. Yesterday the new Boos Allen report appeared on your desk. From another sample of Playbill customers taken from a recent list you e-mailed Boos Allen, the 2012 Playbill customer’s profile is a mean annual household income of $124,450 with a population standard deviation of household income unchanged at $30,000.

You realize that even though you do not have the Playbill reader population standard deviation, you do have enough data to perform a “One Sample Hypothesis Test.” In order to choose the correct statistical tool to complete this assignment, consider the following questions:

  • What do you know about the population being studied (for example, do you know the standard deviation of that entire population)?
  • What do you know about the sample of the population you took (for example, which sample statistical parameters do you have—mean, standard deviation, variance, and so on)?

Complete the following for this assignment:

  1. Determine the null hypothesis (via both an explanation and a math equation).
  2. Determine the alternative hypothesis (via both an explanation and a math equation).
  3. Determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis. You may solve the equation manually or use the Hypothesis Tester – Single Sample file, provided in Resources. You may also use the Hypothesis Tester media piece provided in Resources to review the process for this equation.
  4. Determine if the p-value indicates acceptance or rejection of the null. Use alpha = .05

Report the rejection or acceptance of the null in terms of the scenario results. For this scenario, write a three-sentence paragraph that details: 1. why you can be statistically confident that the mean household Playbill reader’s income has increased, decreased, or remains the same, and 2. what would happen if alpha was .01.

Practical Application Scenario 2

In this practical application scenario, you have just been hired away from the Macy’s linen department buyer position by the Mall of Elbonia (MoE), as the new food court manager. Why? Rumor had it you just earned your MBA! One week ago the MoE conducted convenience interviews in the mall’s food court. One hundred interviews were gathered. The results are summarized in the document titled MoE Interviews, provided in the Updates and Handouts section.

In examining the interview results, you find that each customer is listed in a row and each column contains data on:

  • The customer’s gender (if you need this data, use the coding convention: 0 for female, 1 for male).
  • How much time the customer spent in the mall.
  • How much money he or she spent on food.
  • The customer’s rating of the mall’s friendliness and attractiveness.
  1. After applying the descriptive data measures, the mean is particularly telling; you believe that you can happily tell the food court owners that the average amount mall customers spend on food during a visit has increased. A 2011 study found that customers spent an average of $18.75 per visit. You realize this is a One Sample Test of Hypothesis situation. Use the data in the interview results file (MoE Interviews in Updates and Handouts) and the process outlined below to be sure that your suspicions are correct and that the average amount mall customers spend on food during a visit to your mall has increased. Use an alpha of .05.
  2. Determine the null hypothesis (via both an explanation and a math equation).
  3. Determine the alternative hypothesis (via both an explanation and a math equation).
  4. Determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis. You may solve the equation manually or use the Hypothesis Tester – Single Sample document provided in the Resources.
  5. Determine if the p-value indicates acceptance or rejection of the null. Use alpha = .05.
  6. Report the rejection or acceptance of the null in terms of the scenario results. For this scenario, write a three-sentence paragraph that details: 1. why you can be statistically confident that the average amount a food court customer spends has increased, decreased, or remains the same, and 2. what would happen if alpha was .01 or .10.

Assignment Submission

Complete both of your scenario answers in one Word file (please submit a .docx file) and copy the Excel output, (or any other computer application output that you decided to use), including any graphics, tables, and so on, into that Word document.
