Develop Professional Résumés

Develop Professional Résumés

In order to demonstrate an awareness of psychological career alternatives in a community setting, you will develop résumés for each of the professional experts chosen for your presentation in the Week Three discussion.  Include relevant academic and professional experience that highlights their careers, appropriate skills, and expertise. Brief job descriptions identifying the major duties associated with each relevant work experience should also be included in the résumé. The job description format should be based on the “Professional Experience”/”Relevant Experience” section in one of the sample
résumés provided below.  Each résumé should be two to three pages in length. You may use the resources available on the following web pages:

  • Ashford University Career Services  (http://www.apa.org/careers/psyccareers)
  • American Psychological Association PsyCareers  (http://www.apa.org/careers/psyccareers)
  • Sample Résumés:
    • Resume Sample Graduate Student Counseling Psychology
    • Effective CV’s and Resumes for Psychology Graduates
    • Counseling Psychology Resume Example
    • Counseling Resume

You may use additional sources for career information as long as they are credible. An example of a credible source for this information would include The Chronicle of Higher Education. Utilize at least two professional career-related sources as a basis for the information you will use to complete the required sections in the résumé. All sources must be documented in APA style, as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.

    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  3. Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  4. Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. The information used for both résumés must be included on the same reference page at the end of your document.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Describe two evidence-based interventions you might use to address these factors and explain why these interventions would be effective.

Infidelity and Divorce

FAt first glance, infidelity, separation, and divorce are issues that seemingly only relate to the couple involved, but these issues can impact all members of a family. Infidelity, separation, and divorce can affect the emotional and psychological development of children and create discord in extended families. However, the long-term implications for families that face these issues may be mitigated through appropriate counseling interventions.

It is important that you, as a future marriage, couple, and family counselor, use research to help you to select the right interventions for families going through infidelity, separation, and divorce. For this Assignment, you consider factors that contribute to the development of infidelity, separation, and divorce. Then, you examine evidence-based interventions.

To Prepare:

  • Review the article, “Outcomes of couples with infidelity in a community-based sample of couple therapy.” Consider the intervention strategies used and consider how the choice of intervention strategy affects the outcomes.
  • Review the other articles provided in this week’s resources. Consider the methods for addressing infidelity and related family issues in these cases. Think about the factors that contribute to infidelity in marriages and with couples.

Reflect on how infidelity and divorce could affect various members of a family, including children and the extended family of each partner.

Write your paper on infidelity and divorce and related family issues, using the instructions below as a guide:

  • Describe factors that contribute to the development of infidelity, separation, or divorce. Provide an example of each.
  • Describe two evidence-based interventions you might use to address these factors and explain why these interventions would be effective.

Submit your paper by Day 7.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Suggested length: 2–3 pages, not including title and references.

Case Information

Fran S. was arrested for prescription fraud when she tried to obtain prescription painkillers at a pharmacy with a fake prescription. You have been asked to assess her situation and make treatment recommendations to the court.

Fran S. is a 32-year-old employee at a local bank. She was briefly hospitalized after a car accident 14 months ago and sustained injuries to her neck and back. Her doctor prescribed painkillers for these injuries. He told her that she should only take the painkillers for a few months, but Fran found that she liked the feelings of calm and relaxation that the painkillers produced. Even though the pain from her neck and back went away, she kept telling her doctor that she was in pain so that he would continue prescribing the drugs. When her own doctor told her that he would no longer prescribe the painkillers for her, she found it difficult to go for more than a few days without the painkillers (she reported feeling anxious, irritable, and “not herself” when she stopped taking them) and found another doctor who would prescribe her painkillers.

Fran told herself that the painkillers helped her get through her day, but she started missing deadlines at work and repeatedly coming in late, putting her job in jeopardy. Her husband also reported a difference in her behavior, saying that she was detached, much more irritable and likely to start arguments over minor issues, which had not been a problem in the past. Fran started taking larger doses of the painkillers because she had stopped feeling their effects at the smaller doses. Her second doctor became suspicious of how frequently she needed prescriptions and refused to prescribe her any more drugs. Fran tried again to stop using the painkillers but found that she was experiencing problems, such as headaches, blurred vision, and anxiety, when she was not taking the painkillers. She could not find another doctor to prescribe her the painkillers, so Fran started submitting fake prescriptions to the pharmacy.

    • Identify the differences between the criteria for assessing mild, moderate, or severe substance use disorder according to the DSM-5 and the previous DSM-IV criteria for Substance Abuse and Substance dependence.
    • What level of Substance Use Disorder (if any) would you diagnose Fran with and why? Which diagnostic criteria does she meet?
      • Support your diagnosis with examples and research.
    • Based on the case information presented, what recommendations would you make for treatment for Fran?  Support your choices with evidence from the professional literature.
    • What are current demographics and trends in the abuse of prescription medication? Explain.
      • What are the contributing factors to these trends and demographics?
    • Give at least 2 suggestions for how a doctor might work to prevent a patient from becoming addicted to prescription drugs.

Professional Portfolio

Professional Portfolio

This assignment requires you to gather a compilation of papers and projects from this course and previous courses and add them to your Professional Portfolio. The portfolio is designed to help you compile all you have learned throughout your undergraduate studies with the best examples of your work to represent what you are capable of doing when you graduate the program. This assignment also gives you a opportunity to reflect on what you have learned as a student of psychology, and to prepare to actualize your post-graduation goals. It will serve as a resource as you navigate the world of prospective employers and graduate admissions committees. The student portfolio is also a measure of effectiveness for the Argosy University baccalaureate program in Psychology.  As you develop professionally following graduation, you can add work samples and other pertinent materials, as well as modify existing documents, to reflect that development.

The Professional Portfolio includes two main sections.  A Professional Profile section that is completed by all students with either an Employment focus or a Graduate School focus, depending on your post-baccalaureate plans. The second section holds your Professional Work Samples demonstrating your abilities, skills, and competencies across a range of tasks and objectives.  This section also includes a Final Evaluation of your work samples, yourself, and the psychology program.

The Professional Profile section summarizes your career planning and professional goals. You have already compiled the documents for this section in Modules 1 and 2 of this course. It contains the following documents:

  1. A Cover Letter as a way to introduce yourself to a potential employer This includes details about yourself and why you feel you are qualified for the position. (Employment).

OR

A Personal Statement describing your immediate and long-term career goals, including an explanation of why these goals are appropriate in terms of your knowledge, skills, personal characteristics, values, and experiences (Graduate School).

Note: The personal statement is attached to the Curriculum Vitae (Graduate School), and the Cover Letter is attached to the Resume (Employment), so take the time to be creative and not repeat yourself.

  1. A Resume with list of References that is current, accurate, and professional in appearance. (Employment).

OR

A Curriculum Vitae with list of References that is current, accurate and professional in appearance. (Graduate School)

  1. OPTIONAL: A copy of your Transcript(s)

The Professional Work Samples section demonstrates your performance and mastery of Argosy University’s program outcomes/competencies for the Psychology major. Select 3-5 documents to serve as samples of your best work in the program. Together, they should illustrate your mastery of all the 7 program outcomes listed below. Examples of the type of work that would illustrate each outcome is provided below, as well. The 3-5 documents should be samples of your work that you completed in previous courses as an undergraduate student.

These outcomes are listed below, along with the assignments that could be included to demonstrate mastery of the outcome:

  • Cognitive abilities (critical thinking and information literacy): Assignments or projects that demonstrate problem solving, analysis, synthesis, appropriate use of information resources, etc.
  • Research skills: A copy of a research proposal, a survey developed, etc.
  • Communication skills (written and oral): A topic paper, presentation outline, or PowerPoint that demonstrates your written and oral communication skills.
  • Ethics & Diversity awareness: Papers that demonstrate your understanding and/or analysis of ethical and diversity issues in psychology.
  • Knowledge of foundations of the field: Assignments, papers, or projects that demonstrate your understanding of basic concepts, theories, and empirical findings in one or more of the domains of psychology, including biological, cognitive, developmental, personality, and social.
  • Knowledge of applied psychology: Assignments, papers, or projects from courses and/or an internship that demonstrates your ability to apply psychology to personal, social, and/or organizational problems.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: PowerPoint presentations, videos of your presentations that demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively, appreciate diversity and cultural sensitivity and awareness of your impact on others.

Once you have assembled your work samples, you will write a 700-1000 word narrative to serve as a preface to the Professional Work Samples section. This narrative should consist of a clear and thoughtful analysis of how each work sample reveals your strengths and areas for improvement, according to each of the seven areas addressed in the program outcomes/competencies (listed above). Towards this purpose, you will complete the Student Self Appraisal of Learningfirst, and then use that to generate the preface . Make sure you also address how you intend to strengthen your competencies in all areas as you graduate onto the next step of your professional career. On which areas will you focus most and why?

This preface should also include an evaluation of the Psychology program as well as suggestions for the program that will enable it to help future Psychology majors develop these strengths and overcome these weaknesses in the future.

Enter each of these components (Professional Profile, Professional Work Samples, with self- evaluation) into the Professional Profile Template. Post your Professional Portfolio to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox by Wednesday, April 19, 2017
