“Jeff is 23 years old. He recently graduated from college with a business degree and took a managerial position with a midsize company. He likes his coworkers, but often finds himself bored with his work. Although he was active in college, recently he has gained about 10 pounds due to his sedentary job and lack of time to exercise. Jeff broke up with his college girlfriend after graduation, and since then he has dated a few different women, but hasn’t had another serious relationship. Jeff wonders what the remainder of his 20’s and his 30’s will bring”

Jeff is now 50 years old. He is still overweight and has developed both high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. At the same time, Jeff has some accomplishments. He is the CEO of a midsize company that he built from the ground up. However, he works long hours and does not spend as much time with friends or vacationing as he would like. Still, he lives a comfortable life and is married, with two children. He has a daughter in college and another who is a senior in high school.

Use your module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research the stages of adult development proposed by Erik Erikson and Daniel Levinson. Locate at least two peer-reviewed articles that examine these theories. Write a 4-5 page paper in which you compare and contrast Erikson’s and Levinson’s theories of development during midlife and summarize the findings and conclusions of at least two research studies examining Erikson’s and Levinson’s theories.
In your paper, use Erikson’s and Levinson’s theories to

  • Describe the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development of Jeff as he has transitioned from early adulthood into middle adulthood.
  • Predict Jeff’s development as he moves through middle adulthood and into late adulthood.

Be sure to incorporate how issues specific to diversity (e.g., socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, gender, etc.) have affected his transition into middle adulthood. For example, consider how Jeff’s transition into middle adulthood would differ if he were Caucasian, African-American, Asian-American, or Native-American. Similarly, how would his development at midlife differ depending upon whether he lived in New York City, Tucson, or Memphis?

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Political Impact

In this module, you learned about social class and sexual identity. Consider how political atmosphere impacts clients and how particular legislation (e.g., right to marry laws, minimum wage laws, and tax laws) impact these populations. Also, reflect on how a counselor would best advocate to assist these groups in obtaining a better quality of life. The third aspect to consider is whether those living in poverty and those identifying as members of a sexual minority are “invisible” minorities. For example, can a client who identifies as part of these groups hide his or her membership to the group from society so as to not experience discrimination? What is the impact of being able or forced to hide one’s identity?

The Consultant

Social influence is pervasive. Understanding mechanisms by which our own behavior is influenced can help us intentionally shape the behavior of others.  In this discussion, we will consider various forms of social influence by creating an intervention designed to address a particular concern in one of many real world settings.

To inform your thinking on this topic, begin by reading “Harnessing the Science of Persuasion” (Cialdini, 2001), “Social Influence: Compliance and Conformity” (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004), “Cognitive Consequences of Forced Compliance” (Festinger & Carlsmith, 1959), “Behavioral Study of Obedience” (Milgram, 1963), and “Attribution Versus Persuasion as a Means for Modifying Behavior” (Miller, Brickman, & Bolen, 1975).

Then, imagine yourself as a consultant in one of the following scenarios.  You are responsible for developing a plan to modify behavior, which will be based on social psychological insight.  Select one of the following options and design a program, supporting your answer with scholarly and peer-reviewed sources.
