Discussion Questions IV:

All assignments MUST be typed, double-spaced, in APA style and must be written at graduate level English. You must integrate the material presented in the text to support your discussion, citing in APA format. Outside sources may be used to support the text information, but not replace the text.

Your response to each question should be 1- 1 ½ pages per question. Assignment should be 6-9 pages total plus a title and reference page

  1. B.  F. Skinner has been criticized for proposing a model of human  functioning that negates the possibility that humans can exert free  will. Explain how human thought (cognition) could support claims of free  will in Skinner’s model. Be sure to define free will in such a system.
  2. We sometimes see rabbits and dinosaurs in cloud formations. Do Gestalt principles help to explain this and, if so, how?
  3. In  light of the growing interest in evolutionary explanations for  behavior, why does Freud’s emphasis on biological needs and drives seem  reasonable or unreasonable?
  4. Identify themes in the works of Carl Jung that seem consistent with contemporary cross-cultural approaches to psychology.
  5. The  story of the blind men and the elephant is an ancient parable from the  Indian subcontinent. In it, each blind man in a group touches just one  part of an elephant to learn what it is. When they compare notes, they  realize they disagree completely about what an elephant “is.” Compare  this parable to the humanistic movement in psychology.
  6. Medicine  is a practice that has always been rooted in biology of the body—its  structure, form, chemistry. As our knowledge of the importance of the  brain in behavior grows, it seems that psychiatry, a branch of medicine,  is the discipline best suited for the study of mental disorders. Is  there a role for clinical psychology in furthering our understanding of  mental illness?

Describe the cultural considerations in identification, assessment, and intervention.

In this course, you have learned about a range of exceptionalities in children. For this assignment, you will have the opportunity to gain a more in-depth understanding of a particular exceptionality.

The local public school has asked you to give a presentation to parents or teachers about a specific exceptionality of your choice.

The presentation should cover at least two peer-reviewed articles. Select an exceptionality for this assignment and provide the following information in your presentation:

  • Describe the exceptionality, including its identification and assessment.
  • Explain the incidence of exceptionality in children, including known causes or those hypothesized in peer-reviewed research.
  • Describe the cultural considerations in identification, assessment, and intervention.
  • Hypothesize the prognosis.
  • Recommend interventions for the following areas:
    • At school
    • In the community
    • At home
    • From early childhood through transition into adulthood

While developing the presentation, keep in mind individual differences and strengths, culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and ethical or legal issues in identification, assessment, and intervention. Be sure to include detailed speaker notes to accompany each slide to elaborate on the talking points being raised in the slide.

Use the accompanying PowerPoint presentation tip list to assist in formatting the presentation and speaker’s notes. Be sure to include a title slide and a slide with your references. All citations and the reference list should follow APA format. Click here to review some useful tips for an effective slideshow.

Develop a 20-slide presentation in PowerPoint (not counting the title and reference list slides). Provide detailed speaker notes for each slide of your presentation, which include the main talking points for the topic addressed in the slide. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

What events or developmental milestones were particularly significant in your life? Why?

Observational Activity: Life Review

For the following activity, you will do an interview/observation of a person in late adulthood (60+ years old). After completing the interview, you will write an essay (five paragraph minimum) summarizing your findings. You will address all areas outlined below.

As people enter the later years of life, they usually engage in a process called life review. This involves organizing one’s memories and reflecting on the significant actions and developmental milestones that have shaped one’s life. It is through the life review that people attempt to gain a final understanding of themselves and the world around them. You will choose an older adult for an in-depth, life-review interview and ask the person the following questions.

1. Who were the most important people that contributed to your development, both as a child and as an adult? In what ways were they important to you?

2. What events or developmental milestones were particularly significant in your life? Why?

3. How has aging affected you physically, psychologically, and socially?

4. How do you feel about your life? Has it been satisfactory? In what areas have you been most satisfied? Least satisfied?

5. How often do you think about your eventual death? What thoughts go through your mind when you think about death?

Based on developmental stages/theories discussed in the textbook, you will then summarize your findings and assess the interviewee’s current life stage.

In your essay’s conclusion, be sure the answer the following questions: What did you learn by completing this activity? How will you use this information in your career or personally?
