7.   In reference to the home health care case at the end of this chapter, consider the following:
a. Should Joan and Jerry have applied for home health care sooner, and, if so, who should have made them aware of the benefits of home health care?

b.   Given what you have learned about the accessibility and financing of home care services, are such services as readily available to other consumers as they were to Joan and Jerry?

8.   In reference to the hospice care case described in the chapter, consider the following:

a.   The doctors were pretty sure that Pierre had less than 6 months to live, so he fell well within the guidelines for hospice coverage. Should hospice coverage be limited to those with 6 months or less to live, or should others be covered? Why?

·         Arguments against:

b.   If there was not a day care center available for Wilma, do you think she would be able to continue living with Karen and Lorenzo? If not, to what type of long-term care facility would she likely be admitted?

PART II EXERCISES:

The following exercises relate to Part II of the text. Completing them will help you to more fully understand the material covered in that part.

Exercise 1.

This part of the text focuses on the providers of long-term care. Some of them are institutional in nature, some are noninstitutional, and some are a combination of the two forms. One of the most enduring and difficult questions facing the system is how to balance the use of institutional and noninstitutional services.

A.  How should the long-term care system balance institutional and noninstitutional forms of long-term care?

B.  What factors should be taken into account?

From your understanding of Holmes™ discussions, explain how each one of the following theories might answer the question of torture described in the scenario: utilitarianism, Kantian duty-based ethics, virtue ethics, and Christian-principle based ethics.

The scenario: Suppose a situation presents itself in which there are strong reasons to believe a major attack on U.S. soil is immanent and that many lives will be put in danger. Security forces have captured a terrorist and they have very good reasons to believe he has vital information that can lead to thwarting this attack. They have tried the usual means of obtaining information from the prisoner and none of them have been successful; his resolve not to talk is quite strong. However, security forces are now considering torturing the prisoner. They believe, with a high degree of probability, that torture will break his resolve and he will supply the needed information.

The question: Should they torture the prisoner?

Your thread (at least 350 words) must consist of 2 parts:

From your understanding of Holmes™ discussions, explain how each one of the following theories might answer the question of torture described in the scenario: utilitarianism, Kantian duty-based ethics, virtue ethics, and Christian-principle based ethics.

Select the theory you think is true in the context of the torture issue, and explain why.

Find an article discussing torture and summarize their argument for or against torture. Analyze their argument and use facts to state whether or not you agree with that argument.

A person has planted a bomb in downtown Chicago, and it will detonate in forty-eight hours unless FBI agents are able to find it. You are an FBI agent, and you and your partner locate a possible suspect. You and your partner take the person to an undisclosed location. You follow procedures but are not able to get the information you need. Five hours have elapsed. You and your partner discuss the idea of using torture to extract information from this suspected bomber.

1. What facts would you need to gather in this case in order for you to believe that this person is the bomber?

2. If you had all these facts in question 1, would you use torture to extract the information from this suspect knowing it is illegal? Explain why you would or would not torture this subject.

3. Find an article discussing torture and summarize their argument for or against torture. Analyze their argument and use facts to state whether or not you agree with that argument.

Please note: you will have to make your contribution first before viewing other students’ posts.

GUIDELINES

There are some interesting youtube videos on the pros and cons or rights and wrongs of torture. I will not post any here, though, because I do not want to sway opinions.

1. Divide your post into at least 3 paragraphs, one for each question. The answer to the third question could be a couple paragraphs.

2. Be thorough. For example, answer “why” you decide to do what you do or “why” you believe what you do.

3. For the article, you are to SUMMARIZE, ANALYZE, EXPRESS YOUR OPINION – it’s in three parts!

  • Summarize the entire article. A good summary will require more than two sentences.
  • Analyze the author’s argument: Break it down into its parts; is the author’s conclusion supported by the facts?
  • Explain whether you agree or disagree. Use facts to support your opinion!
  • Use proper MLA citation in the text and at the end, where you properly format the source under the centered title “Works Cited”.
