The Case of the Brightest and the Best

From the increased communication and reports, the Board of Directors has indicated that new hires have to be one of the company’s top priorities, despite the fact that the financial situation remains unstable. In the current job market, finding new hires at the salaries the Gnomengen Group can afford is very difficult. Faced with increased pressure for more manpower from all levels, you have decided to examine current hiring practices and policies.

One proposed solution to the hiring situation is to advertise your positions at salaries above what you know you can pay. When applicants are interviewed, they are told that their skills do not match “the optimal skill set we were assuming in advertising that salary.” Thus, if they want the job, they are forced to take the lower salary that you intended to pay from the beginning, with the promise that if their skill set increases, they may be able to work up to the pay scale that you had advertised. The expectation is that by drawing on a larger applicant pool, the number of hires should increase, and because of stock options employee retention is expected to stay high.

Read the two articles “Predictive Probes”, and “New Test Tells Whom a Crippling Disease Will Hit—and When” from the textbook and write two separate analytical summaries. These articles can be found in the chapter titled: Deciding to accept an argument: Compare the evidence.

Predictive Probes

Several years ago, Nancy Wexler’s mother died of Huntington’s disease, a hereditary and always-fatal affliction that strikes in midlife. Since then, Ms. Wexler, the 38-year-old president of the Hereditary Diseases Foundation in Santa Monica, Calif., has lived with the uncertainty of whether she, too, inherited the deadly gene.

 

That uncertainty may soon be resolved. A few months ago, scientists announced they were on the verge of completing a new test to detect the gene for Huntington’s disease (formerly called Huntington’s chorea). But deciding whether to submit herself to the test is an anguishing choice for Ms. Wexler. “If I came out lucky, taking the test would be terrific, of course,” she says. “But if I came out unlucky, well …”

 

Her dilemma is an extreme example of the kind thousands of Americans will face in the not-too-distant future as scientists learn how to pinpoint genes that cause or predispose a person to a future illness.

 

The test to detect the Huntington’s disease gene should be ready within one to two years. Researchers already have detected some of the genes that can lead to premature heart attacks and, in the near future, hope to spot those that could predispose a person to breast or colon cancer. Eventually, scientists believe they will be able to detect genes leading to diabetes, depression, schizophrenia and the premature senility called Alzheimer’s disease.

 

 

Part 2—Second Article

New Test Tells Whom a Crippling Disease Will Hit—and When

 

Amy Jo Snider, a college senior, has put her career plans and romantic life on hold until she settles a gnawing question about her genetic legacy.

 

During her Christmas break, the Charleston, SC, student plans to be tested for a gene that causes ataxia, a disease without a cure that destroys the brain cells governing muscle control. The disorder crippled and ultimately killed her father in middle age. Because of a recent breakthrough in genetic research, the 21-year-old Miss Snider will be able to find out whether she inherited the disease, and, if so, how soon and how hard ataxia may strike her.

 

“I want to be tested before I start to show symptoms,” she says unflinchingly. “I’m graduating in May, and I have to start planning my life.” As agonizing as the knowledge might be, she says the uncertainty is worse. “If I’m in limbo, it’s not fair to people around me,” she says. “I can’t deal with not knowing.”

Research Proposal

Review the Example Research Proposal provided in the course materials. Design a research study on the topic of the study selected in Week One and critiqued in Week Three. Your design should seek to resolve the limitations you identified in the study you critiqued. Your paper must address all of the components required in the “Methods” section of a research proposal:

  • State the research question and/or hypothesis.
  • Specify the approach (qualitative or quantitative), research design, sampling strategy, data collection procedures, and data analysis techniques to be used.
  • If the design is quantitative, also describe the variables, measures, and statistical tests you would use.
  • Analyze ethical issues that may arise and explain how you would handle these issues.

Your Final Paper must be six to eight pages in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Utilize a minimum of six peer-reviewed sources that were published within the last 10 years, in addition to the textbook, that are documented in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. The sources should consist of the following:

  • One source should be the article you critiqued in the Week Three assignment.
  • At least two sources should be about the research methodology you have chosen for your study.

Required Sections and Subsections (use these headings in your paper)

  1. Introduction – Introduce the research topic, explain why it is important, and present your research question and/or hypothesis.

    1. Design – Indicate whether your proposed study is qualitative or quantitative in approach. Identify the specific research design, using one of the designs we have studied in Weeks Three through Five, and indicate whether it is experimental or non-experimental. Evaluate your chosen design and explain why you believe this design is appropriate for the topic and how it will provide the information you need to answer the research question. Cite sources on research methodology to support your choices.
    2. Participants – Identify and describe the sampling strategy you would use to recruit participants for your study. Estimate the number of participants you would need and explain why your sampling method is appropriate for your research design and approach.
    3. Procedure/Measures – Apply the scientific method by describing the steps you would use in carrying out your study. Indicate whether you will use any kind of test, questionnaire, or measurement instrument. If using an existing published instrument, provide a brief description and cite your source. If you are creating a questionnaire, survey, or test, describe the types of information you will gather and explain how you would establish the validity and reliability. If you are not using such an instrument, describe how you would collect the data.
    4. Data Analysis – Describe the statistical techniques (if quantitative) or the analysis procedure (if qualitative) you plan to use to analyze the data. Cite at least one source on the chosen analysis technique (from your Week Two assignment).
    5. Ethical Issues – Analyze the impact of ethical concerns on your proposed study, such as confidentiality, deception, informed consent, potential harm to participants, conflict of interest, IRB approval, etc. After analyzing the ethical issues that apply to your research proposal, indicate what you would do to handle these concerns.
  4. Conclusion – Briefly summarize the major points from your paper and reiterate why your proposed study is needed.

The Final Paper:

You discovered that SWPBS is an “alternative to traditional reactive behavior strategies” that were based upon a “hierarchy of rules and consequences” (Shepherd & Linn, 2014, p. 266). While rules and consequences are included in SWPBS, this approach takes a “proactive, positive” approach designed to promote acceptable behavior in all students (Shepherd & Linn, 2014, p. 266).
