What is a neurotransmitter and what is its function?

  1. Neurons communicate with each other
  2. Neurons communicate at synapses
  3. Communication is delivered via the axon
  4. Synapses and neurotransmitters: Be sure to click on “Presynaptic neuron,” “synaptic cleft,” and “postsynaptic neuron.”

Throughout life, the connections between neurons in the brain develop and change according to the genetic foundations that the individual inherits from the parents, and the environmental influences to which the individual must respond. For example, the abundance of one type of neuron over another, and the neurotransmitter that each produces can be predetermined by the DNA an individual inherits. However, an individual who is exposed to chronic stress during developmental years may reinforce some response pathways more than individuals who do not experience the same patterns of stress. These points are summarized and explained further in this article “Stress Management,” provided by the Mayo Clinic. Read this brief article before continuing to the requirements for this SLP.

Continue your reading on how the brain handles stress and the idea of plasticity a public information initiative of the Society for Neuroscience, The Kavli Foundation, and Gatsby. Read the article, “How does the brain handle long-term stress?” and follow the link to the article, “Effects of Stress on the Developing Brain” in the right-hand column of links provided on this page.

Address these questions in paragraph format to complete the SLP assignment for Module 1:

  1. What is a neurotransmitter and what is its function?
  2. What neurotransmitter is mentioned in the article, “How does the brain handle long-term stress?”
  3. How is short-term stress described in this article?
  4. Do a little independent research on the hippocampus. Where is it located in the brain? Briefly describe its function and neurogenesis. Insert a labeled picture into your assignment illustrating its location.
  5. How is long-term stress differentiated from short-term stress in this article? What brain region is involved in this comparison and what is its general function? Insert a labeled picture of this region into your assignment illustrating its location in the brain.
  6. After reading the article “Effects of Stress on the Developing Brain,” explain the implications of chronic stress on the brain and the rest of the body reported by the authors. What examples of chronic stressors are included?
  7. What components of parental care are described as being important determinants of brain development in this article? What genetic influences are described as relevant to the ability to handle stressful environments?

SLP Assignment Expectations

Organize this assignment using subtitles related to the content for each question. Answer each question under the subtitle using complete sentences that relate back to the question. Be sure to include a references section at the end of your assignment that lists the sources that you were required to read and any additional resources you used to research your answers. Follow the format provided in the Background page.

What is the difference between “community intervention” and “intervention in the community”

What is the difference between “community intervention” and “intervention in the community”? How can health advocates thoroughly address each in, for example, public policy making of one of the following (choose one and discuss or choose a health concern of your own liking): a. Youth violence b. Asthma in children c. Walking track and other public access to exercise/fitness d. Heart disease e. Lack of availability of health food (in stores, restaurants, etc.)

Your responses should follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.). Your writing should be well ordered, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful. Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics.

How will you design your facility to improve the patient experience?

How will you design your facility to improve the patient experience?

Press Ganey is one of many companies that assist with patient satisfaction surveys.  The big database for most surveys is the federal government–These companies work on a monthly basis to provide detailed feedback because:
The governmental HCAHPS survey is done once a year
They cannot afford to do poorly as this costs them financially–all CMS patients are reimbursed based on their patient satisfaction and quality scores
The company like Press Ganey helps the organization to improve scores and they usually mail 300 surveys to the government each year.
Patient satisfaction has much more power today–the patients feedback and experience is critical to future business.  With social media –it’s a different world and word of mouth can help or hurt your business. What reactions do you have to the ideas they presented? Include examples from the course readings or your own experience to support your perspective, and raise questions to continue the dialogue. 100 to 150 words
Discuss some of the innovations that led to the use of Lean by manufacturers?

Review and discuss the resources on Facilities Planning and Safety page on the Oregon.gov website in 150 words. https://public.health.oregon.gov/ProviderPartnerResources/HealthcareProvidersFacilities/FacilitiesPlanningSafety/Pages/index.aspx

Renovate or Replace?” Open your web browser and search for the article “Renovate or replace?” by William Mead.
Review and discuss the resources on the How to Start a Facility or Service page on the NC Division of Health Service Regulation website. https://www2.ncdhhs.gov/dhsr/faclist.htm

After working in facility design for many years, you have become well-known in the industry. Your manager has asked you to create a short handout that new employees can refer to as they receive training through the company. This handout should walk new employees through the process of facility planning.
Create a 350- to 700-word HANDOUT or FLYER that summarizes the process of addressing facility planning needs. Include the following in your handout:
Describe the steps of facility planning.
Explain the importance of pre-design planning.
Explain the rationale (or decision process) when determining whether to renovate or replace a health care facility.
Cite at least 2 peer-reviewed, scholarly, or similar references. Must include Introduction and Conclusion. Format your assignment according to APA guidelines where appropriate.

Why is important not to dismiss views of negative stakeholders?

Why is it important to communicate with and address the issues raised by stakeholders? Why is important not to dismiss views of negative stakeholders?

There are so many stakeholders in healthcare and with so many individuals with different vested interests there are bound to be differences of opinion and conflict.  To make it easier. let’s think of stakeholders in this course as internal and external:
There are two types of stakeholders, internal and external.
Internal stakeholders include care providers, administers, and employees within the organization.
External stakeholders are the patients, community surrounding the facility and governmental agencies.
The role of all stakeholders is to shape the outcome of the project ensuring it positively affects all involved (Nordmeyer, 2014)
Because there are so many people with a stake in the outcome in facility planning, it requires more skill in communication —many different ways to include those stakeholders in the many different phases of the  facilely plan.

How have use and design of health care facilities changed over the past 85 years? What key social, political, and economic determinants led to these changes?

How would you use new facility planning and/or evidence-based design to effect operational change?

Discuss the types of space in a healthcare facility that you will use in your facility plan.

Discuss the strategic planning process for healthcare organizations.

Strategic planning process starts with understanding the vision and mission of the health care facility. Every decision that is made will have a direct impact on the organizations real estate assets and needs. Usually organizations look at financial performance, customer/patient knowledge, internal business growth, learning and growth. The next step would be analyzing the project either using techniques such as SWOT so that all possibilities are explored and making sure there is an understanding of the facility needs. Then begin planning out the project time line and finally putting the plan into action and implementing the changes and or begin remodeling. Usually a committee is put in place to help with making the decisions that are needed and having people on the committee from the different departments it will be affecting will give different ideas and suggestions to the project. What reactions do you have to the ideas they presented? Include examples from the course readings or your own experience to support your perspective, and raise questions to continue the dialogue. 100 to 150 words
