Emerging: the author either does not attempt to characterize a text’s intentional reasoning or characterizes this reasoning in incorrect ways (or ignores it altogether).

Writing Mechanics: Writes clearly: (25 points possible)

Exemplary: an exceptionally clear and effective writing style enables points to come through powerfully but also with nuance and precision.

Proficient: style of writing is generally strong, main points are clear and well expressed.

Developing: Main points are discernable but obscured by poor style. Paper is weak as to punctuation, grammar or word choice.

Emerging: writing is unclear. Main points do not come through. Many mechanical errors are present.

Uses Resources Appropriately: (25 points possible)

Exemplary: paper goes beyond what is required and uses a number of outstanding sources. (this means more than the text and my bibliography)

Proficient: Paper uses appropriate sources and employs them to good effect.

Developing: paper has some appropriate sources but it misses some obvious ones.

Emerging: Paper lacks significant number of appropriate sources.
