This week, I would like you to start researching for your Academic Argument. For this paper, I want you to argue for a solution to a problem you see with gender relations in one of the following places:
The Workplace
School (high school or college)
Media (television, music, movies)
Family Life
You should begin this project by developing a question you want to answer (a problem you want to solve). For example:
“School dress codes often impact female students much more negatively than male students. How do we redesign dress codes for high school students so they are more equitable for all genders across the board?”
As you can see, this question is specific and allows an individual to come up with and consider many possible alternative solutions. You do not want to begin with a question or problem with an obvious or already widely known answer. You want something that is dynamic (interesting in our contemporary time) and debatable. If there is no way to argue against your solution to the question, there isn’t much point in writing a whole paper about it!
The next step will be to develop the answer to this question that you want to argue for. This will be your thesis. So, for example, one of the answers the above question could be:
“High school dress codes should be gender-blind and not specify requirements for clothing that is traditionally gendered (ie dresses and skirts) in order to avoid unfairly punishing female students more than male students.”
Your paper, then, will focus on all the reasons why your solution (or thesis) is a good choice in order to solve the problem you have identified. Remember that this is a traditional academic argument, so you will be expected to use peer reviewed, academic sources to support your claims. You need to use at least one source from our class materials, but all other sources (you need 4) should come from library research.
Guidelines:
It should follow the parameters of a formal paper (have a thesis, support claims with evidence form the texts you are using, follow the conventions of grammar and all other mechanics, conform to MLA style guides, undergo a revision process, proceed with internal logic, etc.). This paper will be 6-8 pages long, and will require at least 4 peer-reviewed academic sources, one of which must be from the course materials.
