The central event of the 20th century

The Second World War was the central event of the 20th century. The U.S., however, had an exceptional experience compared to the many other countries involved. Why was the American experience in World War II so exceptional, and how, or in what ways, did the U.S. emerge as a global superpower? In your answer be sure to draw on specific examples from either lecture and/or the readings.
