The assessment for this module will take the form of an essay, which is designed to test the depth and breadth of the learning outcomes. You will be required to analyse a case of regime transition (spain) with one or more of the theoretical approaches examined during class sessions. The essay assignments will assess to what extent students have achieved the learning outcomes of the module:
– By defining and explaining their case’s regime outcome as a democracy, authoritarianism or a hybrid, students will demonstrate that they can compare these regimes (the first learning outcome).
– Likewise, students will determine the mechanism through which such change occurred in their cases, and specify why other instruments were not at play, revealing that they can outline such mechanisms (second learning outcome).
-Then, students will choose a theoretical approach to explain their case (the third learning outcome).
– Overall, the assignment will demonstrate analytical aptitude in written form (the fourth learning outcome).

THINGS TO CONSIDER
When working on your essay, please consider the following three points: 1) As stated above, you will have to do more research and cover more factual information; 2) What do you think was the most important reason for the regime change? If it was Franco’s death and Juan Carlos’ decision, what made the monarch dismantle the old regime, in which he had absolute power? You mentioned the significance of the left and the military reconciling their differences. How was this achieved? If the organisational capacities of parties were critical, which parties were important and what WERE their organisational capacities? Maybe you can begin by answering these questions to provide a more comprehensive account of the Spanish case in your essay. 3) You will have to bring in a more theoretical/abstract level discussion to your essay. This was not a requirement for the presentation, but will become essential in the essay and therefore, something to keep in mind
