Issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity are very much influenced by sociocultural factors
and historical context. Even the ways in which we define sexual orientation and gender vary from one culture to
the next. In short, our societal assumptions about gender and sexuality, not to mention our laws, have always
been in tension with the ways many people actually lead their lives.
For this question, I would like you to please think of two settings/situations in which traditional/normative
gender roles, sexual orientation, and identities appear to be taken for granted. How might nonheteronormative/gender nonconforming people experience those places and events, and what might it look like
to challenge or disrupt those gender norms? You can discuss cisgender stereotypes, binary/dichotomous
“either-or” categories that people tend to apply, sexual preferences in the context of dating, relationships, and
marriage, etc.
