Globalization and the restructuring of the global economy have created new opportunities for employment. Many new forms of employment have sparked the development of urban life throughout the developing world and attracted rural populations to city centers in search of capital gain. Women make up a significant portion of the labor force in the developing world— particularly in export factories. The rise of the pink collar economy, or assembly line work, has disrupted traditional gender roles and expanded womenâ€s spatial mobility into the wage earning economy.

As women in the developing world strive to meet cultural reproductive demands and household expectations, the economy has presented them with the additional responsibility as financial providers. Negotiating motherhood expectations and meeting financial demands creates many challenges for women as they struggle to satisfy both of these areas. The context of motherhood and mothering are changing as women strive to meet new expectations. As many women migrate for employment, mothering from afar and relying on kinfolk or “hired domestic help” to assist with meeting their household responsibilities appears to be a common trend. However, traditional expectations of motherhood are still present despite the changing climate of economic survival and development of nuanced parenting strategies.

In America, many women from the developing world are hired as domestic workers or nannies. Their lives are complicated by caring for another familyâ€s child(ren), while their own offspring are left in the hands of “other mothers” in a different country. These transnational mothers not only criticize their own choices for migrating to provide financially for their families but are significantly critiqued by their relatives, children and employers.
